I always get on my soapbox when I see a reaction to the Guess Who, someone has to explain to me WHY they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, for me it is a complete injustice.
it's not a "rock and roll" HOF..it's how can we sell the most tickets and whatever woke garbage is going on at the time. *edit: they should open an entire wing just to Canadian Rockers, Triumph, Helen Redy, The guess who, rush, bryan adams.....
Freddy Mercury, greatest voice of all time, said if he had to have another voice than his own he would want Burton Cummings. Stand Tall live is absolutely amazing, its when Burton left The Guess Who and released solo material. Highly recommend reviewing that tune next
Yes Canadian icons. I saw them live in Toronto in front of 500,000 crazy Canadians and when they did American Woman the crowd went nuts. Robert Plant was asked how it felt to be the best vocalist and he said I don't know ask Burton Cummings ( lead singer The Guess Who) Great reaction as usual my friend and Peace out 🙏 ✌️ ☮️
An amazing group!!! The first Canadian rock band to top U.S. charts. From 1969-1974, their hits included: "American Woman", "No Time", "Share The Land", "Hand-Me-Down World", "Undun", "Laughing", "These Eyes", "Albert Flasher", "Star Baby" and "Clap For The Wolfman" (A tribute to DJ Wolfman Jack). UNDUN is a song that warns of the devastation of drugs. And the just as the reality of Undun echoes in your thoughts, you couldn't help but enjoy "Clap For The Wolfman" -- fun lyrics, fun beat, great topic!!! ""Hand-Me-Down World" was real! Enjoy each one and the whole catalog! Keep the "Share The Land" in your heart!
Burton Cummins voice is another one of those once in a lifetime voices from my generation. We had so many of them. I don't know how that happened, but it did.
Can't watch the reaction tonight, but I popped in to say... I got to see The Guess Who perform live at the Grizzly Rose in Denver-ish in 1997. My boyfriend at the time even met one of the guys from the band at the bar while getting us drinks. Then in the middle of the set the leader singer called out my name and wished me a happy birthday. I was so shocked. Made a good concert even better. Lol
They are from my home town of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Neil Young also grew up in Winnipeg and started his first band called The Squires. Bachman Turner Overdrive are also from Winnipeg.
@@manzahalem8845 Also Monty Hall from Let’s Make a Deal, Tony winner and actor on Blue Bloods Len Cariou, and Winnie the Pooh (the real bear that the story is based on) is named after the city of Winnipeg.
Crash Test Dummies, Chantel Kreviazak, Fred Penner,Al Simmons no lack of talent. The story behind the name I heard on one of those history of music shows on the radio in the 00s. Evidently during a lunch hour concert at the height off Beatlemania to promote the band the radio station (CKY58 I want to say) did not name the actual band but just announced them as the guess who? Obviously hoping to convince people that it might be the fab four. Now I have no idea if it was true, but a great story either way.
Burton Cummins has a great voice. He also has a solo career. You should listen to Stand Tall!! The Midnight Special was a great show in the 70’s. As teens, we would rush home a few minutes earlier to beat curfew and prepare to be glued to our seats. The Midnight Special started at midnight (imagine that!) and we didn’t want to miss a minute of it!
Those of us who were around when this song came out can tell you that if you closed your eyes you would not be able to tell the difference between the recording & this live performance. real talent…
🇬🇧 If you've ever heard the Iconic song "American Woman", you've heard this band before. Burton Cummings has to have one of the top ten greatest male voices of all time. ❤🎼🎶...Edit Yes, The Guess Who sang "American Woman" first.
In the 60s all the bands and musicians learned to play live before recording anything most of the time. Now, the recording comes 1st & they can't duplicate it truly live.
The Guess Who songs you should check out; No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature (like nothing you've heard before), Clap for the Wolfman, Hand Me Down World...to mention a few
I love how Burton wrote one song, Randy wrote another and when they met up the next day, they were so close to one another they just combined them into one song on the album.
Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman were the band's creative forces. Cummings more ballad, Bachman more Rock. Eventually Bachman split, forming Bachman Turner Overdrive. BTO had some seriously good rock songs. Please check them out. Cummings and Bachman still tour, often together.
You don't hear a song you love for years and remember every word and every note of the music. They're ingrained in our brains, and hearts LOVE THE GUESS WHO❤❤❤❤
In the spring & summer of 1983 I was stationed at Ft. Gordon, Ga. I had finished basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC and was at Ft. Gordon for AIT, mine being Radio Teletype Operator. Across the way from my barracks just a not too distant walk away was a place called Barton Field, which was basically just a big open field that I believe was used at one time as a parade field for the different units stationed there. I walked out of my barracks and heard music coming from over at the field, so I started walking that direction. I got to the field and saw a big stage set-up and walked up as close to the stage as I could get. It was then the opening keyboard part to this song started, and It hit me I was looking at Burton Cummins, Randy Bachman and the boys from The Guess Who. They had reformed after a number of years apart and were playing a free show for the troops. Not sure how I wasn't aware the show was gonna happen to this day, but I got to see an hour plus of one of rock's legendary bands, and they were f-cking awesome!!
Everything on the Midnight Special was always live. Agree with you, there are still artists today who don't need autotune and who are great live or even unplugged.
That was awesome! I haven’t heard that song in years! And yes they did the original American Woman and Lenny just covered it! I love both versions! You should check it out! The Midnight Special was a great TV show wayyyyy before your time😂😂 I need to go to the channel and take a ride down memory lane! Love watching these performances with you! ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
If you like this you'll also like Spinning Wheel by Blood, Sweat and Tears. The Midnight Special was a weekly music show that came on at 1a Friday nights. I looked forward to it every week
That voice, I will never forget the first time I heard those vocals in 1969 and INSTANTLY became hooked. Some "must-listen" suggestions from this artis: Laughing, Undun, No time No Time, American Woman, No Sugar Tonight, Stand Tall, and Hand Me Down World. The Guess Who was a band out of Canada originally........ so many great performers out of Canada (Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Joni Mitchell, Rush, Nickelback, and The Band are but a few). Burton Cummings is 77 years old and is currently on tour across 2 countries with 23 shows remaining.....SIMPLY AMAZING!
right?...the quality of the human voice hasn't changed over the last 50 years. The quality of the music has. The songs lended themselves to vocal excellence back in the day. And I think youre point is super valid....we only heard the top talent perform bc you had to be at the top too make it.
YES!!! My parents had this album; known this song since I was about 5 years old; so beautiful; makes me teary eyed today ❤ Next Guess Who song if you haven’t already: AMERICAN WOMAN; it’s a banger!
I remember watching the Midnight Special with my older sisters, back in the 70s. They did have a lot of great, talented music artists on the show. It came on Friday and Saturday nights at midnight ❤.
Midnight Special was a once a week televised live concert watched by tens of millions of people. The top music stars on the planet performed for scale just for the Exposure.
one of my favorite bands. I heard this song right after I heard of my mothers death so it brings tears to my eyes when I listen, but i still love this song.
As noted, Burton Cummings is a Canadian icon. A couple of his individual songs, "Stand Tall" and "Break it to Them Gently". I think you would enjoy both.
I cannot emphasize enough how thrilled I am to be revisiting all of these great "oldies" and to watch YOU reacting to them. Your appreciation of all of the truly talented and disciplined artists of decades ago is refreshing. So happy to share your journey of "my" music. #oldiebutgoodiehere☺
Saw the Guess Who in Oct '69 just as this song was moving up the charts. The venue was a community center with a max capacity of 125 people. Great night of music.
This great song was written by his former band mate Randy Bachman of BTO fame. Randy recruited Burton when he was only 17 to join the Guess Who with him. Burton rearranged the order of the song as it was originally These Arms.
Burton won the Playboy Magazine's Male Vocalist of the year back in 1974. If my memory serves, one of the lyrics in the studio version is "You spoke it, and you broke it". I loved watching the Midnight Special, along with Don Kirshner's Rock Concert back in the 70's.
Yes, The Guess Who performed American Woman. The song is not about hating on women from America, however.😂 The band is Canadian, and the song is about their disenchantment with America's involvement in the Vietnsm war, as well as societal problems such as inner-city poverty. The "American woman" being referred to is the Statue of Liberty.
Not The Guess Who, this is Cummings Solo, with his band in the dark, because you know he never wanted to share the limelight. Now go back and hear The Guess Who from the original group, where all the musicians were first class.
@@toddstevens13 No, you can see him at 7:53 in the video, and though it’s dark, if you know what he looks like it’s easy to recognize him. Also, the original video from The Midnight Special identifies it as being a Guess Who performance, not Burton solo.
Another amazing group that lost their lead singer. Burton Cummings has an amazing voice and is a great pianist. The song American Woman that Lenny Kravitz did? The Guess Who recorded it in the 70s. It is fire!
I have never seen this performance before. Burton seems to be holding back and very restrained here, but wow, so smooth, seemingly never flipping to head voice or falsetto. One of the truly iconic voices in pop history. Instantly recognizable.
The Guess Who have many great tunes, and Yes Mr. Burton Cummings can sing. Sounds like he meant this one. This is a Canadian band! You are right Black Pegasus; the recordings sound a bit smoother on the ear. Never heard a bad tune from these guys!
@@karlweir3198 I love Canada too karlweir but I'm an American cousin so to speak. I've driven around Lake Ontario entering from Jackman I believe. It was before the need for passport. My favorite spot so far is Niagra Falls on your side. Eight hours from my old home. Been there a dozen times in my life and love the Gardens along the gorge far more than the casinos. I think they blemished the area. Maybe they should have put them in Buffalo. Anything would help that mess. My America was cleaner then and people loved the country. Enough about that, I don't want to pop a vein in my head! Yes, I loved the Guess Who & really loved The Who. They both made some fine music. The Canadian's also built the Ram Military Tank I believe to US Specs. It was a fine tier two machine, and it was quick. Black Pegasus does great reviews for the most part and is insightful. Later....
Burton Cummings, another of our great Canadian artists and we love The Guess Who!!! ❤ 🇨🇦🍁 'These Eyes' was released in 1969 and had been certified GOLD. He's now 76 yrs old.
Burton Cummings had such a distinctive voice...I loved that band growing up. My parents had their album with this song on it. I could listen to it over and over again.
Midnight Special was recorded live in Los Angeles. We went to a taping during our honeymoon trip. Charlie Daniels broke a string on his fiddle and jammed for at least 20 minutes to get it in tune like he wanted before resuming taping.
The Guess Who and the vocals of Burton Cummings are amazing. I took my son to his first concert last year and it was Burton Cummings. He’s still got those pipes.
When auto tune was a thing of the future far away. Ain't heard this banger in a minute.. Thanks BP 😀 I've got my own light show going on 😆... Gotta be at least 1000 Fire Flies blinking away over the pasture.
On the studio version in the chorus he sings in a higher register then ups it even more. Other Guess Who hits-American Woman, No Sugar Tonight, Undun, No time and Clap For The Wolfman.
Amazing band from Winnipeg, Manitoba! These guys were groundbreaking! If you want to see them live, original members, look at the "Running Across Canada Tour". Seriously! You will see them in their later years and still sound like they are playing in the 70's! No doubt, they should have been in the Hall of Fame decades ago!!
I’m 55. My daddy (rip 2018) was an actual hippie all my life who played music constantly on our stereo. This is one of his favs that I’ve known since the cradle. My daddy called this two stepping music. He and my mom loved dancing and did it often. Wish I’d had a video camera to catch them dancing to this and so many others over the years! This song is pure magic. Never gets old! Great reaction!
Burton Cummings was one of the best voices of the entire ‘70s. Check out “Undun”, “No Sugar Tonight”, “American Woman” for more amazing vocal performances.
Burton Cummings has one of THE BEST voices. You should check out other songs by the Guess Who and Burton Cummings like Undun, American Woman, Stand Tall. Saw Burton a couple years ago in concert. Still has the voice, he was great, a real entertainer. Thanks for reacting to The Guess Who. 👏👏🥰
When the band's producer/manages sent the albums to radio stations hoping to get air play, they decided to package the albums in plain brown covers with the name "The Guess Who" written on the cover. The DJ's thought maybe it was a new release from "The Who" and played the single "These eyes." It became an instant hit with requests for the song coming in over and over. One of the most genius marketing ideas ever.
Saw Burt Cummings in St. Louis in 1974 in a small venue. He was dressed all in white and had his white piano. My sister and I were in the 5th row. He sang all of his great songs. One of the best concerts I've seen. In the years before that, he played and was friends with Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive. They were and are friends and co-wrote a lot of hits together. "She's Come Undone" and "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" amazing ones, also, and would love your reaction, BP. 🕊💕♥
Randy Bachman was one of the founders of THE GUESS WHO, he later formed Bachman Turner Overdrive - BTO. Randy played guitar, Burt Cummings played piano & flute, they both wrote songs and did vocals for The Guess Who. Burt was also a founder of the band.
This was Burton Cummings singing this one and they had many big hits in the late 60's and early 70's ("No Time", "She's Come Undun", "Share the Land", etc.). After they broke up, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman went to join up and form "Bachman Turner Overdrive" ("Taking Care of Business", etc). This was a phenomenal early rock band and they've got a great catalog - well worth exploring and reacting to. Burton Cummings also did some excellent solo work ("Stand Tall" for instance) and that's worth checking out as well!
Every once in awhile I have to be reminded of the numerous Canadian artists that have had a huge impact on my musical tastes over the years. Great stuff 🌸
