Queen Of The Reich, Take Hold Of The Flame, The Lady Wore Black, Eyes Of A Stranger, I Don't Believe In Love or Breaking The Silence are bangers. They showcase why Geoff Tate is on the Mt. Rushmore of metal vocalists alongside Rob Halford, Bruce Dickenson, Ian Gillan, and Ronnie James Dio. 🤘❤️🇨🇦
Thank you Melisa fir getting to Queensryche. This song, although very melodic and beautiful, is no way to get what Geoff can do. You will love, love 'Take Hold of the Flame' live from Tokyo '85. Me and my mates cut out of school to get their autographs at Tower Records before they opened fir Metallica that night. They even signed my leather jacket and were so down to earth. Detention was well worth it as was the concert. When you listen to Operation: Mindcrime you have to listen to the whole album. It's a concept album so you'll get the story rather than hodgepodgeing around with different songs from the album. They even have a live video of them performing the album in it's entirety called, wait fir it, Operation: Livecrime😂😂😂 If you've got a spare 1 - 1 1/2 hours, I recommend it. Sorry for bleatherin on. Keep up the good work yer doin Melisa hen 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤
Aw thank you for watching again Russell! Yeah tbh it wasn’t at all what I expected but getting this as the start I think will make Take hold of the Flame even more impactful. Operation Livecrime 😂😂😂 outstanding 😊💙
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Take hold of the flame will melt your face. It's that good. This live version in Tokyo is a must. Take Hold of the Flame [Queensrÿche - Live in Tokyo 1984/08/05] ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xk84dVq644k.html
Take Hold of the Flame live in Tokyo '84 will help understand why fans so highly regard Geoff and his talent. It helps show his range and his ability to move octaves word to word 🤘
Operation: Mindcrime is one of, if not THE, greatest stories (from beginning to end) Literally a complete story from start to finish in order. Totally worth the listen and one of my favorite albums EVER 🤘🏻💥🔥🙏🏻
Geoff Tate is simply stunning. But if you'd like to be truly amazed by his skill (and I _mean_ that), you need Take Hold of the Flame. From their Live in Tokyo concert 1984.
Queensryche was my favorite band of all time. Amazing artists. If you listen to Operation Mindcrime, you really need to listen to the whole record beginning to end. It's really a story, with each song detailing a different part of the story, and it's quite complex.
Another artist to check out in the vein of early Queensryche is Crimson Glory. Midnight is another phenomenal singer with a killer range. He sadly passed away in 2009 & much missed. "Where Dragons Rule" is a good one . Epic!!
May 26, 1986 I went to my local Record Bar (record store) and bought the Hear 'n Aid, Dio's heavy metal for Africa project, album, single and VHS video. After watching the video of which I was introduced to Geoff Tate I went back to said revord store and got Queensrÿche's newest album Rage for Order 🤘 been a fan ever since. Have got to see them several times and even got to meet them on their Q2K tour.
Now that you've heard his lower register, you must check out the performance most reacted to, the live performance of "Take Hold Of The Flame" to witness his unparalleled early 80s pipes. This song, although their biggest hit, is a much more subdued vocal.
I have to agree with everyone in the comments about "TAKE HOLD OF THE FLAME" It's by far one of if not the most amazing songs vocally by any singer from any genre. Dog's Day Productions
Well, now you know why the requests for this song have been so numerous. A masterpiece of a beautiful power ballad. As far as that type of composition, it’s truly among the greatest. And the band has a number of strong tracks to experience.
How nice to see a beautiful young lady listening to old school metal songs and ballads. Thought my music died and only was alive because of old farts like me. Thank god i was wrong.! Greetings and keep on going dear sister!
Yes, you picked the one end of their material. And it is a beautifully written and beautifully arranged and produced lullaby ballad. How can one not love it... But of course, it is also the most commercial (and commercially successful) song, and it had the chance to reach the mainstream when progressive metal definitely was not mainstream. And I really appreciated it. They were more famous for their incredibly well written albums, and the concept album Operation:Mindcrime was seriously a game changer when it was released. I still remember how I listened to the whole album on good studio headphones, and I think it is one of the masterpieces of metal until today. All metal musicians I knew spread the word about it (as they later did with Tool), no matter which subgenre they were playing. You simply had to listen to it to be up-to-date at musicians parties, they were state-of-the-art. They have written some great songs and there are great videos and live performances available. For the full other end of Geoff Tate's abilities also in the upper registers, which is maybe more impressive than his emotional abilities and rich voice in the low registers, most people would recommend 'Take Hold Of The Flame', and so do I ...(live performance Tokyo 1984, fantastic). Together with the song you just heard, you get the full picture of this amazing vocalist. For another beautiful progressive song, that I really like, I would recommend 'Eyes Of A Stranger'. Their music had something to it, and they were incredibly skilled and did a beautiful job to create new standards for progressive metal. These guys were delivering, and their live presence was simply impressive. It gives me a warm feeling thinking back of the time, when I was in the heavy rock and metal scene as a young musician, and we listened to all this fantastic music in the studio backstage rooms or our typical metal bars in town when it was brand new... Have a wonderful start into the week, my dear Melisa, dream in silent lucidity and have a tasty coffee on monday morning (whenever this is, I mean, we are in the creative business, right?) You get an extra coffee and croissant this time, for taking me back in memories... ☕☕☕🥐🥐
Now you've broken the ice with the mighty 'Ryche, you MUST listen and react to 'Suite Sister Mary', the centrepiece track of the greatest concept album in history, 'Operation: Mindcrime'. Not only is the song a monumental work of art, not only are Geoff's vocals on that track utterly sublime, you also get the added bonus of the superb vocal cameo from Pamela Moore, which will blow your mind....
I’ve seen them more times than I have fingers to count on. Just great. Take Hold The Flame in Tokyo is a must do, you will be blown away. I promise it. Geoff Tate is legendary.
Geoff Tate doesn't just sing a song, he paints a picture. He will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride. You will feel his joy, pain, and all other emotions deep in your soul. In my opinion, very few singers can capture the same emotions he emits. Perhaps Matt Barlow, when he was with Iced Earth, comes close.
What a wonderful comment! I think music has a much bigger impact than people expect, and this feeling here is the result. Thanks for watching my dude 😊💜
LMFAO! "A really lovely vocalist"! Oh my dear, you have NO idea just how "lovely" his vocals truly are and you will not see/hear/feel his full range in this song/video. You simply MUST check out Operartion:Mindcrime album or Rage For Order album to hear the power of his voice!!
It doesn't hurt that the orchestration was done by Michael Cayman pretty much a living legend and film score circles and clearly these guys were aware that if they were going to be taken seriously with something this extravagant and rather self-indulgent they needed to make sure that it works on every level and it flat-out does. The production is exactly just the right amount of textured and smooth without being full of syrup and being superb self-aware in the bad way... the arrangement is just adventurous enough to come off his Progressive without really taking too many chances they had not already been well worn by bands like Pink Floyd previously, in fact this is probably the best Pink Floyd cover song that's not actually a cover of a existing Pink Floyd song... it just hits all the right marks at the right time and really did a lot for them obviously in terms of sales and reaching a new audience, many of whom probably were quite taking back once they figured out much of Queensryche other repertoire was significantly more metal sounding in the traditional manner than this song. But, all in, cool song done by a band who we're not afraid to take chances. I think that the first 3qr records are absolute classics and if you like your metal intelligent with a dose of Iron Maiden and Rush worship heavily imbued throughout... Highly recommend them.
One of the best live bands you could ever hope to see in concert. This is one of the “mellow” songs. Try Best I Can. That’s a positive song. Just listen to it, you don’t have to put it on your channel. Or The Whisper…..
Geoff is one of my top 5 male singers! He is amazing live. You should check out “Take Hold of the Flame” live in Tokyo! It’s really shows his chops well. For an older Geoff, check out “Alchemy” by Avantasia. He’s duets with Tobias Sammet and kills it! To checkout Queensryche’s “Operation: Mindcrime” you should do it from beginning to end as it is a complete rick opera and should be heard from beginning to end! It’s genius!
Their power ballad that some thought was a new Pink Floyd song when it first came out in 1990. As others have mentioned , Take Hold of the Flame and Queen of the Reich will give you a better taste of Geoff's voice. Anything from Operation:Mindcrime is great too. Put an orchestra behind it and you'll probably like it?! Hmmmm 🤔🤔 EPICA Retrospect 10th anniversary concert 2013, Within Temptation Black Symphony concert 2008(with Metropole Orchestra). Both concerts with live orchestra on stage. Suggestions from those shows: EPICA - The Obsessive Devotion or Design Your Universe. Within Temptation- Our Solemn Hour or Ice Queen.
“What else he has under the hood”. That lmplies an a motor. His voice, range, sustained power & tone……. More like a jet engine!!!!! One of the best voices in rock period. I rate him above Robert Plant easy.
Been into this band since day 1, never thought of Bowie, but now that you have said that, I totally hear it :), specially when he says 'your eye', and 'the game'.
Saw Geoff recently in Scotland. His voice was I am glad to say, in great shape. Still hitting some very high notes. The album you mentioned "Operation Mindcrime" is simply one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. The writing, arranging along with the storyline dealing with mind control, drugs, corruption in political authority and religion works superbly well. They got called a "thinking man's heavy metal band" by some! It is an album to kind of listen right through and follow the story (like a good movie in a way). The song you checked out is one of their quieter moments but a beautiful song to listen to. They have a song called "Queen Of The Reich" which shows his falsetto rather well. There is a video of singer Brittney Slayes from Unleash The Archers singing it in a bar doing karoke in Edinburgh for fun. This was AFTER a full show at Bannerman's Bar. Filmed on a mobile phone and on the dj's mike for punters. No one wanted to follow her afterwards that is for sure😂.
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Thank you. Most folks I know personally when I start telling stories tend to go "oh god, he's off again"😂. I like watching your channel as you actually have interesting and educational things to say. Wish you all the best.
my vinyl of Operation:Mindcrime is just a smooth shiny piece of plastic as I played it way too much. If you react to any of that, I highly recommend listening to the entire piece, as it is a concept album and a true Rock Opera. The storyline is riveting and when it was big, I was in the stage of just starting to learn about Politics, world leader and how $$$$$ rules everyone and thing.
Will do! Thanks so much for your comment my dude! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch. 😊💜

This was Queensryche’s biggest hit. However, it was a ballad, not a heavy rocker. They do have songs that are really heavy, some really fast and aggressive. This shows Queensryche’s versatility.
That was a studio video Melisa, you need to watch the live video of Take Hold Of The Flame in Japan (Tokyo I think), Geoff's vocals are simply astonishing, it will knock the shite out of ya!
You should analyze other more powerful songs from Queensrÿche like "Eyes of a Stranger" and "Empire". Those are more representative of the Queensrÿche style...
I was lucky enough to see them in '86 for their "Rage for Order" Tour. I highly recommend to watch them live in Japan in '82 performing "Take Hold of the Flame" next, so you can really get an idea of his vocal capabilities. Then, maybe watch them perform "Suite: Sister Mary" live
I also have never heard them before, and the first thing I noticed was that this song strongly evoked (for me anyway) Pink Floyd, especially "Mother" and "Comfortably Numb". But I could hear what you were saying about David Bowie as well. Very interesting. And I agree; the song was lovely.
The late great Michael Kamen who did the orchestration here also did the orchestration for Comfortably Numb (and Is There Anybody Out There? off the Wall and several tracks of The Final Cut) which goes some way to explaining the similar feel. But even without that, the song is quite Floydish to begin with.
#metalheadmusings -Take Hold of the Flame LIVE will blow your mind. Geoff Tate`s range is/was INCREDIBLE...Even singing really high, he has great tonality.
I'm so grateful that you played that song. When it came out I was battling cancer and it took a whole different meaning for me. I felt at peace with the fact that I might not make it and that song helped me accept that possibility. I urge you to explore more of their music and yes, Geoff Tate can belt it out! I suggest you listened to the albums Rage For Order and of course Operation Mindcrime. Thank you so much for reacting to this song. It reminded me how much I love life and how much I wanted to be around for a long time 🙏
Oh Andre! 😭😭😭 What an amazing story! Isn’t that the wonder of good music. I can reach people in the hardest of times when nothing else can. Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. I hope you’re in good health ❤️
I discovered you - like many others presumably? - through your Lorna Shore reaction and I absolutely loved your insights, just as with this one. One thing that stood out to me is how quickly you caught onto the fact how many different styles of harsh vocals Will did despite admitting you don't have much knowledge in this field. To me this shows how knowledgeable you are and how good of a listener you are! by the way, if you like Ballads and diverse ranges, I can only recommend Elisabeth Addict by Sukekiyo. It is not a very popular band, but their singer Kyo is also singer for a band named Dir en Grey and he has been called by some as the "Dimash of Metal". I dont know how fair this assessment is but his range and variety is wild (and apparently he is self taught)
I’ve been a fan of Queensrÿche since day one, and this has always been one of my favorites. But it is not a good indication of Geoff Tate’s vocal ability. Check out the live video of them doing Take Hold Of The Flame. It is from a live performance in Tokyo, Japan, in 1984. Guaranteed to blow your mind! Keep the good shit coming dude. 👍
to be honest, I am rather jaded on this song as it is one of my signature karaoke songs. Havent been able to put it into one of my band set lists yet. For your first taste of the band, Lucidity is a misleading track. It does show their depth as musicians and writers, but as a 'metal' or a prog metal band, this is more of a ballad. There are more heavy tunes on this or other albums which will give you a better idea of Geoff's dynamic voice, let alone the band. Another song I love on this album is Another Rainy Night. There's so much to unpack with this band. They were just hitting their stride with this album.
Yeah tbh from what I was told I was expecting a lot more heavy vibe but that’s the joy I think of discovering these bands a song at a time. I’m looking forward to going back but this was a beautiful start for sure. Thanks for watching Jona 😊
@@SoulSingerDiscovers They came out at the beginning of the Hair Metal thing. I remember they got signed to a contract without even playing a note onstage. All on the strength of the first EP. Those Seattle bands, they just have ....IT
@@SoulSingerDiscovers girl shut up you are, in a different direction. Sometimes it takes a long time for the right eyes and ears to land on you. They had to work and work to get that contract. It didnt come overnight.
While this song is amazing, and a great hit for them, it’s not representative of their work in general. Check out “Roads to Madness” or “London”, if you really want your mind blown. Also, Operation: Mindcrime has quite a lot of orchestration throughout, but you have to do the entire album, because it’s a concept album. And probably one of the top 3, ever.
A lot of metal is very theatrical, almost pantomime-like - all bombast and larger-than-life characters. Most musicians (and fans) are very concious of this and play up to it, usually with tongue firmly in cheek*. We all know that it's overblown and can be pretty silly but that's the point! This doen't mean that the music isn't taken seriously, it is, but if you can't have fun with it then why bother? Rob Halford riding a Harley on to the stage at the start of "Hell Bent for Leather" is objectively daft but at the same time so fucking metal it hurts! * Being a po-faced humourless metalhead, or musician with an "I am better then you" attitude, is asking to have the piss taken. Mercilessly.
How about, The Killing Words, London or Screaming In Digital.

Finally my sweet Melisa. This is my first favourite band within the progressive metal genre. I saw them live with this setting of band members. The most notable concert was the first one, back in 1984 they was touring as support to Dio. They had the best sound that night in Stockholm and I loved their performance. Dio was of course great to see and hear, but they had a crap sound compared to Queensryche. The second time I saw them was at a monsters of rock in Denmark in 1992. I primarily went to the festival just for them. The show was performed in order The Black Crows, Queensryche, Metallica (playing on Lars home turf) and headline was AC / DC.
Aw Mikael thank you for watching again! It was a total treat and I’m chuffed it’s your favourite 💪 I’ll be returning to them soon but this start was glorious 😊💙
This was Queensryche's one big mainstream hit, and like a lot of 80s/90s metal bands' "commercial hits" it wasn't very representative of their usual style. That said, it's almost universally regarded as one of the best of its kind, especially back then when metal bands often tended to write very cheesy ballads. Instead, Queensryche channeled their Pink Floyd influence and hired a really good orchestral arrangers and wrote one of the most beautiful songs of the 90s. Still can't wait to hear you react to Take Hold of the Flame if just to see Tate's range. Also, don't expect to hear anything close to Opeth out of Queensryche. Queensryche are much closer to Iron Maiden and Judas Priest than modern progressive metal like Opeth. Opeth basically combined the progressive elements from bands like Queensryche with 90s death metal (Death, Cynic, Atheist, etc.) and 70s classic prog like Yes. #metalheadmusings Metal has embraced campy fun since its origins. The genre's grandfathers, Black Sabbath, were named after a Boris Karloff film; Judas Priest dressed in leather, rode motorbikes on stage, and sang about fictional avengers; and Iron Maiden even had a zombie mascot named Eddie. Even Mikhael Akerfeldt from Opeth is a really funny guy himself. If you ever see him/them live there's a high probability you'll hear a joke or two during the concert!
Queensryche is a great band but they are not quite metal. They do rock thought. Take Hold of the Flame, as already suggested, is probably one of the best ones to check out. They have a few ballads and I believe they were more prevalent toward the end of their popularity. I suggest Sanctuary, one of my favorite ballads from the 80’s, but it’s an earlier one and not so popular so check it out on your own.
Wrong. They were fully considered a Metal band when they first started; listen to their arrangements, listen to the instrumentals, listen to the vocals, listen to the messages in the lyrics; all were Metal. Let's say they 'softened up just a little bit', slowly backed away from their harder stuff so eventually the Elitists claimed the band had 'sold out'. But Metal they were. Just ask anybody who at the time was an adult ramrod-straight 'Christian' Churchgoer (who would all be in their Eighties by now, at the very least)! They were just as Black-listed and banned by parents as any other Metal band. They were considered as much 'forbidden fruit' that the kids had to sneak out or go behind their parents' backs in order to enjoy, as any other rough-and-tumble Garage Metal band. Later on of course, they were a bit softer and this song in particular got plenty of play on public radio. Suddenly, half-way acceptable to the adults...
@@jamescurfman3284…I was born in 1966 and my parents had no problem with me listening to The Warning Album. Had that been released in the early 80’s my friends and I might have considered it metal but Metallica Kill ‘em All was out by then and Ride the Lightning was out the same year.
@@jimshort9266 There are different levels of HEAVY in Heavy Metal. Some ore just Metal without being Heavy, and that is okay. Comparing bands just turns into fan wars so I try to avoid that. Nobody wants or needs that sort of conflict except absolute psychopaths, narcissists and the Elitist Snobs who feel they need to gatekeep and control others. I say FFFF all of that. EJECT the control freaks from the fandoms, stomewall them, Blacklist them, let them crawl under the busted-ass bridge with the rest of the damned trolls. There really is no need to compare; you like or love, don't like or hate and it is all personal taste. It's fairly easy to pick your lane and figure out what you want to listen to or what you want to avoid. I don't get why some people have to create the boxes to stuff others into in the first place, really. I mean, besides the control freak thing of narcissists and all that.
They are absolutely metal. You mention Metallica, but Metallica (and Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, etc.) were one genre of metal (thrash) and Queensryche were another (progressive metal). Both genres were influenced by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, but Metallica and the other thrash bands mixed in punk influences and considerably sped up tempos. It just so happens that thrash ended up defining "metal" for many after the 80s and bands like Queensryche seem as close to 80s hard rock than thrash, but there's absolutely a spectrum between the two. It's also worth noting that by the mid-80s death and black metal were already a thing and a lot of thrash (including Metallica) also started seeming closer to rock than death/black metal bands like Bathory and Possessed.
Queesnryche fan here (the annoying kind), this song is a tragedy. The beginning of the rapid end of Queensryche. Sorry to be so negative. It needed saying lol. Lovely reaction though, and insightful.
