Opeth is my favorite band. I'm a musician and Mikael Akerfeldt is a true source of inspiration for me. The genius of this man is outstanding. You have to listen to Hessian Peel now.
Me: why am I so melancholic, and want to hang out smoking in a bar and asking old men their life story? Also me: Listens to Tom Waits screaming about meeting Bete Milder in a bar
What I like about Yorkshire is that for most of the year Opeth gives me the appropriate vibes and then for 2 months then The Temptations fit the bill best.
Say it all the time, Opeth IS a genre. I too would love to see them live; Live at Red Rocks is a good concert...good sound recording and makes me all the more envious for those that have seen Opeth live. Love your humor...you are fun and lively.
I first discovered Opeth when Blackwater Park came out. They were the band that taught me that death metal growls were worth digging into. I've had the pleasure of seeing them 3 times live, and they never fail to deliver a stunning performance. For a long time several years ago I used to listen to Harlequin Forest as a way to wind down before bed. Highly recommend that song. A live version preferably because it's one thing to hear what a band can do in the studio with all the time in the world, and quite another to see them pull it off on stage. 🤘🤘
I’ll check it out! Thank you so much for the suggestions! They really are amazing aren’t they? I’m so jealous you got to see them so much. What a treat. 🥰
Opeth has probably become my favorite band over the last few years. Sometimes I’m in the mood for the newer proggy stuff…sometimes the earlier heavier stuff…it’s all great . Love your sense of humor by the way…
Wasnt expecting you to make a Tom Waits reference. Never thought of Mikael as the Tom Waits of metal, but I think that makes perfect sense. I love you so much for saying that 🖤🤘🏼
Harry it makes too much sense! And that’s why I love Opeth because any musicians who seem like they are uninterested in being palatable is my jam. Thanks for watching my dude 😊💜
Opeth is also my favorite band and I’m 66- so I’ve heard and experienced LOTS of bands and music. Opeth= #1. Second is a band called Sparks (brothers Ron and Russell Mael): a band probably 99% of you don’t know. 😊
One of their least reacted songs, but it’s haunting it it’s own way. Love your reaction, you have a great comedic charm as well as a sultry/soulful singing voice.
Opeth is in my top 3 favorite bands of all time. The band is tight and consistent live (seen live twice) with an incredible presence, both live and from the album. Powerful prog metal growls to sultry yet meaningful and powerful slow progressive rock melodies. The change ups are a mystery and its a roller coaster ride every time you listen but its always as good as the last but more importantly i think is the music gets better the more you listen, allowing for more notice of the nuances and subtleties. amazing musicians cant say enough about the entire band
It's so great to see that familiar smile after listening to Opeth song :) Smile that says - I got way more than I asked for.. I've discovered them rather late in my life but they grew very fast on me to be my favorite band, followed by Tool, Rishloo (yes check them sometimes), Haken, Leprous... So much good music, but only 24 hours in a day! Opeth has vast discography, lots of different albums - from acoustic to jazzy or 70's rock influences, so it is bit hard to make a suggestion for next Opeth song. Maybe 'Deliverance' with it's sick outro? Or mellow acoustic 'Windowpane'?
As good as it really is, this even one of Opeths more mellow, simplistic, main-stream friendly songs. I look forward to you discovering some of their more complex songs. Opeth - Baying Of The Hounds Opeth - Face of Melinda Opeth - The Drapery Falls
Melisa, being an Opeth worshipper for decades it is nice to see younger people recognize the genius that is Opeth across their catalog. And it is great that you are doing reactions to their music, but for your own personal enjoyment as a fan, you should get yourself a copy (yeah I know, who does optical any more) of their video disc "In Live Concert at the Royal Albert Hall" which has two complete sets, the first of which they the entire Blackwater Park masterpiece album live for the first time for its anniverssary, then a complete set of catalog picks up to 2010. This is one for the true fans of this outstanding band.
This album was truly a "watershed" moment for them. The music before and after is pretty different, but totally awesome for each. His clean vocals are very underrated.
I think when you have such an impressive group, it’s probably very easy for people to forget that your clean vocals are something worth listening to. He is something else 😊
Thanks for a great reaction as always. Hessian Peel from the same album shows more of that ebb and flow in their music, as well as Mikael flexing his vocal chords a bit more. Great song and a complete journey.
You are welcome! Oh, I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but this is a shorter version of the song than the original album version, by 3 minutes. Certain parts are allowed to breathe a bit in the album version. Guess their label thought it was too long for a video, or something.
Burden is my favourite track on that album. The whole thing is a jam really, but Burden, that just sets you back. Beautifully melancholic lyrics accompanied by an incredible keys solo, not to mention the guitar solo at the end. This was the song that I mistakenly thought was on Heritage as it was lighter and more Prog than death. But I fell in love with the whole album regardless.
Seen Opeth live three times. One of the most memorable live music experiences I ever had was watching them do The Grand Conjuration in the front row of a small-ish club in Dallas. The atmosphere was so palpable if I was a religious person I would've felt like I was watching an actual demonic summoning. Also got a taste of Mikhael's humor as he told the story that they felt at home in the club (called 'The Trees") because they originally considered themselves "forest metal." LOL
Man that comment about Can I Play WIth Madness hits home. Literally lost count of the times I have screamed CAN I PLAY WITH MADNESS at randoms in the pub after excessive alcohol consumption.
Opeth is always about the journey. Every song is a journey but each album is also a journey to enjoy probably with a glass of wine and a big comfy chair and just soak it all in.
Opeth is brilliant. I've seen them live more than 10 times. It is an experience. BTW you should check out Leprous, if you're not yet familiar with them.
I see this journey into metal is pretty new (for your channel at least). So far you have been picking some great stuff to react to and many of the most popular metal react songs are popular for a reason tbh. I suggest checking out: Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars (live in sonicpump studio). You will love the complexity of the songs and the multiple scores and changes every song goes through by them. Rivers of Nihil - The Void From Which No Sound Escapes. This is probably the peak of performance from these guys in my opinion and it encapsulates the drama a musician (as well as he himself on a different level) goes through sharing so much of themselves with the world. Ne Obliviscarus - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidescope (the live version). This song is literally studied in major music schools worldwide as an example of compositional mastery.
Opeth is the truth! Great reaction and breakdown Melisa🤘🏽Since you seem to love this band, may I recommend another legendary band that is very much in the same Prog rock realm as Opeth & Tool & that band is ‘Porcupine Tree’. Clean vocals with masterclass musicianship. Maybe start with ‘Arriving Somewhere but not here’ live or ‘Anesthetize’ live in Tilburg. Loving your channel, keep ‘em coming! 🙌🏼😎
@@SoulSingerDiscovers I basically came here to the comments to say something similar as @rahilpurkait2832 , but not just from this similarity of genres point of view, but also because you Melisa mentioned small details that someone had to decide upon... This album was made in the Opeth era when Michael was doing the production and it is still very good. But intresting enough, his good friend Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree is one of the best prog producents of younger generations (as well as singer, guitar player and a songwriter ). Few albums later, on album Heritage, Michel wasn't satisfied with his own production, and hired Wilson to do it and you can notice the difference. On the other hand, Steven Wilson after taking break from Porcupine Tree, started doing his own albums and few were very similar in style to what he was helping Opeth achieve. Oddly enough, he changed his style lately, but not the sound of Opeth, so last few Opeth albums are almost like new ''old'' Steven Wilson albums.
I’m ecstatic that you’ve captured how Opeth fans feel about them. This one is breathtaking and Watershed as an album is a Masterpiece. Mikael is staggering talented and would recommended his collaboration’s with Steven Wilson. That’s a Rabbit hole well worth going down.
After years of listening to Pantera and then listening to Cannibal Corpse, I decided to branch out into other bands. One of those bands was Opeth and the first album I obtained was My Arms, Your Hearse and I fell in love with the song When. Pretty sure it was around 98/99 that I discovered them. So good
Opeth fan here .... But only up to watershed . Heritage left me cold they lost what made them them on that album - the heaviness and the juxtaposition of that and the softness . Blackwater park is their masterpiece in my ears , with deliverance a close second .
Beautiful song. Guess what I did today? I was sent home early from work with stomach issues. Then I watched Your new video and, wait for it... I joined Your Channel, My Fine Scottish Lady! I feel much better already. Keep up the Great Work!
Aw Scott! That’s so sweet of you! I really do so appreciate anyone wanting to support the channel, but especially happy when it’s someone I enjoy seeing pop up in the comments section. I think I only have one other member 😂 so most if not all of the extra content I make for member will be directed almost entirely at you 😆❤️
Hello, Melisa. How can I be funny and happy like you? Thank you, from someone who listened to so much Opeth my entire life became melancholic. (Happy music? That's illegal!)
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Well, my current plan is to get rich by running a business, and then open a dog shelters, so I think you're on to something. Dog is life.
I am honoured to receive this Comment of the Week award, and would like to thank my colleagues, Swedish Dave, and of course Esther the pub landlady for making it all happen.
Great reaction! I love the part where it sounds like the drums are desperately trying to break free and go completely ham! I also love the little squeaky fret sounds on the acoustic guitar parts. The wind instruments are oboes (though they are probably sampled). Not often you hear those in metal songs, is it? :)
I love Opeth, this was awesome. I have seen them live 8-9 times, and met the band once, just great guys. They have so many great songs, if you want something a bit slower i would recommend Windowpane from the roundhouse tapes live, just a beautiful song. Everything from their latest album is gold as well because it is so different. I absolutely love Åkerfeldt. He is a magician.
I’m really looking forward to getting into the back catalogue because of the few things I’ve heard so far. Everything has been completely astonishing. Thank you so much for this recommendation I’ll take it out. Thanks for watching my dude 😊
I have a surprising number of thoughts about this track. This might have been the first Opeth song I listened to. I remember Opeth being a band I'd seen in RU-vid comments as I got into metal, and Porcelain Heart was a song title I'd seen. So I listened to this, thought it was cool because of that haunting riff that comes in around 7:40, and then listened to more Opeth and thought "wow, Porcelain Heart barely gives you any idea what they're like". Now, that doesn't mean this song isn't unique. That riff I mentioned, those crazy drum parts, and the story behind the song all give it something special. I just think this is still a "surface level" Opeth song, if you know what I mean. Also, this is a shortened version for a music video that really doesn't do the lyrics justice, IMO. I think the studio version flows better and lets some of the sections sink in more. The ending is definitely stronger. Anyway, I know there's plenty of more stuff to check out, but if you come back to Opeth soon...Harlequin Forest or Blackwater Park.
This my dude, same! back in 2008 I heard this song for the first time. And it really is just surface level :-O I am glad I caught the band at the death metal height years, as I became a massive fan all the way to 2011 I had consumed so much of their back catalogue. I love Opeth still tho, but there is also some slight disappointment when they release new records now a days......but man, they still release amazing craft. I always end up loving their newest ones in the end ❤
Yeah i loved this one a masterpiece :) Loved the acustic guitar and he actully sings and dont scream like the other ones. Maybe im slowly becoming a hardrocker defently down with Opeths
So I have a tier on patreon but it is full at the moment for requests but if you want to tell me here what you’d like to see I have a running list of everything I’m getting through. Thanks so much for watching my dude 🥰
Definitely a beautiful song, but oh boy, oh boy. Such a pity that on the video they chose to delete a few bits of the song. The extended version has got more to offer. On the other hand a video and such a wonderful song of Opeth. What more does a pure music fan want?
So, Opeth got to you too? I've been a fan from the get go. That song comes from Watershed and it's a fantastic album. Check out The Lotus Eater from the same album, it's so good. Also, the experience Mikael growling boice you can explore Bloodbath, a group he was part of for a bit. Also, Steel is another project he is involved with. Enjoy these discoveries and have a fantastic day!
@@SoulSingerDiscovers I'm all smiles, right now. And I wanna share it with you, dear: A link in a following answer. 'Cause that one will be blocked, 'cause of the link. Not music-related. Showcasing a humble genius. Breaking 2 world records. On a homemade motorbike. Some of it might have been on UK tv? Pls don't skip, when part of it may be not your kinda thing: this whole 1st part will find it's crescendo. But you won't get the point of it without these calm preparations that he did beforehand.
If I'm honest I kind of bounced off this album: the new drummer and the new guitarist were both very different to their predecessors, and I just didn't gel with it. Glad I've given it a few more goes more recently though cos there's definitely good stuff there. That said, I actually saw them on this tour. I didn't plan to initially, I decided that seeing them nine times was enough, I didn't really need a tenth. But when my then-partner said she wanted to go that changed things! Really glad I went, firstly because it was great to see them packing out a venue that was about five times the size of where I'd first seen them, and secondly because Arch Enemy were also on the bill, and they were also on the bill one of the first times I'd been to see Opeth! Brought things almost full circle for me. Arch Enemy are also a really cool band, was really glad to see them. I don't listen to them that much, but they're phenomenal live, and Angela was an absolute force of nature both times I saw them.
Big Mikey A (as he prefers to be called) is one of the best vocalists in metal. Dude can switch between beautiful cleans and beastly growls like he has a distortion pedal installed in his throat.
Would love to see some more Jinjer. "Retrospection" has a similar gothic sound. It's a wee tad harder, but it's similar. And we get to hear Tati in her native Russian tongue for some of it.
I know this was forever ago, but you owe it to yourself to listen to the album version(non video) of this song. They trimmed out a lot of instrumentation for what is essentially a radio edit.
Opeth is-read: was-an eclectic mix of prog, death metal, and Swedish folk music. It’s interesting that Mikael’s voice is more of an instrument than an actual singing voice. No song displays that better than Harlequin Forest, which is my personal favorite. After this record, they went in a prog-only direction, abandoning the death metal elements. While they’re still good, the singularity in their sound is now conspicuous by its absence. Their discography through Watershed, however, is as good as any band out there.
Melissa Stares At Opeth And Says Nothing; I don't think anything will ever cmath the feeling of seeing them live in Brum and when they finished playing Blackwater Park nobody was moshing or moving, we were all just staring at Mikael till he said "thank you."
If you want to blow that Scottish brain into smithereens, search for a band called Storm Corrosion. Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth & Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree collaborated on a single album. Those 2 brainiac titans of Prog Rock created a masterpiece for the ages. It made Alan Parsons & Pink Floyd cry. (Well maybe not, but you get the idea) 😄
_"If you have something negative to say about Opeth... *go f^^k yourself!*"._ And we are two of us now, Melisa Kelly and me, telling you that same thing!!!! Seriously speaking after such a colourful note... Opeth does to the heart and stomach what only Tool can do to your mind and bones. They sit all together on the very top of the mountain to me. They redefined how music and song writing should sound like. Speaking of genius by the way... I must make a name to put together up there with Mikael Akerfeldt and Maynard James Keenan and that name is Christofer Johansson. Dear Melisa Kelly please... do not sleep on the band which to me redefines Classical Music and Opera: Christofer Johnsson's project band _{that's how I define that band unicity}_ called *Therion* ... please... do not miss such a spiritual challenge for the soul!
It's a shame the music video has a shortened version of the song. It still sounds incredible but i guess when you've heard the album version for over 10 years, edits are difficult to listen too😂
Hi Melisa ... think it might be time to react to Deep Purple's live TV performance of Child In Time from 1970. Ian Gillan, their singer at the time, had REAL soul. And PIPES!!! Cheers!
Awwww. There you are again listening to a progressive metal opera of Opeth. 🙂 You have sooo many great bands on your list still. I am really excited about how you perceive all their unique approaches to music. Sigh. I love how you get the greatness of them all. So many great songs, so little time... And yes. Opeth is a pretty fantastic band for progressive metal. I love the Steve Hackett-ness in Åkerfeldt's writing quite a bit. Have a progressive week and all the best, my dear Scotish dudette!❤
They are truly astonishing and I haven’t even heard a fraction of what they have to offer. Which is such a treat, as I haven’t found a lot of acts over the past year or so that I could really get into. Thank you Martin! May your week be filled with music, laughter, and very little hard work. ❤️🥰
Yeah, once you listen to Opeth, other music just doesnt compare

Hi Melissa, I just love Opeth. I Have seen them several times live and always amazed by their delivery. The thing I love about them is their progress in musical directions. Started as a progressive Black Metal band and over time moved more towards a traditional progressive rock/metal band.
