Regardless of what I think of the remake, the original game is EXTREMELY impressive for it's time and still holds up today.

The thing that hurt the most is them removing Serenity from the save room, at least the type writer music hit about the same.

One little detail I remember is the permanent scar on Leon's cheek after the first attack from Krauser when he jumps from the ceiling and cuts Leon's face. Will always love the OG.

the thing that hurts me a bit is that these extremely noticeable ambient sounds aren't in the remake, they made the atmosphere in the OG version incredibly unique. the remake just does them way more subtle, which makes the game feel a bit different in comparison. also, obviously the soundtrack is nowhere near as good. I liked the remake a lot but the original just has a special place.

The original had a special kind of charm and spirit and its own art form, and I think Shinji Mikami's directing techniques really helped execute all of the ideas nicely.

It’s quite amazing how well the original holds up. I thought most of my memory of the visuals were just nostalgia, but seeing this made me realize how it looked better than many of the games of the proceeding generation. Truly a landmark in gaming history.

One thing I sure do miss is the more diagetic and creative menu systems. So many games these days just have black rectangles.

Ambient sound is really something you don't appreciate until it's gone and don't have it

The sound designer in RE4 OG, Yoshihiko Wada, made very sure to to make every sound in the game satisfying. He went out of his way to make every gunshot sound cool, and even make both of Leon's individual footsteps sound unique based on what surface each is walking on. The man had insane talent and passion. The remake, while I still think is fantastic, absolutely lacks in sound design in comparison.

The fish jumpscare got me so good as a kid but having it be a cutscene ruins it a bit I think.

What made the Del Lago secret death animation so terrifying in OG RE4 is that it happened in REAL TIME in game. The game didn’t freeze for a split second for the script to go through or anything, no loading screen, it just killed you right there. I remember first doing that years ago and I felt my soul almost rip out of my body lmao. The loud roar, the huge splash of water, the big CHOMP, so unforgettable.

Original vs Remake? funny how even capcom managed to forget that Resident Evil 4 was a game basically about making fun of Resident Evil as a whole. Now its this overly serious garbage again. RE 4 old: style, flash, jokes, memes, gunplay and ported to everything including your TI-83 calculator, beloved by fans through generations. New RE 4 Remake: same formula done to death for "Horror" games, overly tame story line, repeat segments, fetch quests, any character with breasts are covered from the NECK down and a mentally ill spanard who has more screen time than he needs. And Ashley looking like shes 4 years away from menopause. No one is going to look back gracefully to RE4 Remake in 20 years..

I love how in RE, they use music to make the player feel a sense of relief and safety. Just hearing the safe room music makes you feel a massive sense of assurance. It gets imprinted onto the player throughout the game because you go from high stress situations to suddenly being safe from all the danger. In RE4 the music when you approach the merchant area 5:16 becomes a kind of therapy. When you hear that music you know you can take a breather, upgrade yourself to be stronger, take some time to construct your jewels and use your money in safety. Ever since RE1, safe room music is an iconic part of the RE experience.

The original is still beautiful to this day. Truly a classic.

this really does show how much minor details like game UIs, sound effects, line delivery, and small tidbits can really count when making a game i always try to not overlook that kind of stuff

The OG Game absolutely terrified me as a kid - I was 12 when it came out and remember how utterly frightening that village and castle was to me.

Save room themes were definitely areas where the original RE2 and RE4 surpassed their remakes, in my opinion. Especially since RE2/RE4 had absolutely phenomenal themes for their safe rooms.

There's just something in the Original RE4 where the ambiance and the soundtrack that just... creeps me out and keeps me on my toes everytime I play it.

I never played the original, played the remake recently and loved it. Now that I have seen how the original looked, it blows my mind they got that kind of gameplay, graphics and direction on a PS2 that too in 2004, way ahead of its time and still holds up today

Edit I forgot to mention that removing the cutscene where Las Plagas controls Leon to choke Ada ruins some foreshadowing. Earlier, Leon says to Ada, "Better advice: Try using knives next time. Works better for close encounters." Then much later in the game when he chokes her, this results in her using her knife to get him off of her.

In the OG everything was grey, slimy, eerie, gritty and creepy that's what made it great, the new one looks just like every other dry dark shiny game on the market

I know the over the top cutscenes aren’t everyone cup of tea but the ones in the original are so entertaining that I can’t help but watch them every time and the original dialogue is just the cherry on top of the action

Salazar is not iconic anymore and Saddler is barely seen, not mentioning now he's just a generic cult leader, the part it hurts the most is that the director of the remake was one of the original devs that worked with Mikami, there's just no excuse, it's impossible he didn't learn anything

I really loved the bleak late autumn vibes of the original, that's how November in rural areas with forests around looks like. The remake is more colorful and feels more like mid September. It isn't bad but it's different.

One thing that I miss that's hardly included in modern RE titles are the flavor texts when you inspect something. There are a few that are auto triggered with voice lines but just not enough as the older games.

RE 4 REMAKE attempts to take itself so serious it becomes off as a pretentious story that overstays its welcome. All the girls wear shorts or pants of some kind, no wacky 007 references like the dress & heels, lots of shooty bits and a poor man attempts at pseudo-Hollywood cut-scenes. Felt like watching Netflix with your in-laws...

I will admit the ambient sound of the original is insane. Another reason why I loved REmake even to this day. Ambient sound adds so much to atmosphere. and no one does it better than Resident Evil Remake, Resident Evil Zero, and Resident Evil 4 (original) which all were being made around the same time.

19:24 is an interesting difference. In the original, Leon uses a stripper clip in a scoped rifle that would require single loading, and in the remake loads single shells in a non-scoped rifle that would actually accept clips.

I feel like what helped with the og atmosphere is the creepy sound effects in quiet areas and cut scenes that keep playing in the background but in the remake it's all quiet for the most part

It always bothered me that the streets of Raccoon City in the RE 2 remake lacked the sound of wind, crows and ambience which the original did, something which gave a lasting impression so long ago in a game with just still pre rendered backgrounds.

Funny now this video isn’t getting much heat as it did when it first dropped. The honeymoon phase is definitely what made people riot over this. I love both games. RE4 Remake is one of the times when I break my rule of not preordering. But the original just can’t be replicated. It was lightning captured in a bottle and people calling it overrated is the only ammo they got because the game is that good and made the franchise even bigger.
