@@SlavGuns It is pretty common though not 100% of cases. In my first year doing interviews at NAB, we had a camera top shotgun mic and a hand-held interview mic - the MD46. We ended up using the MD46 audio 100%. But we were also using a Sony FS5 with XLR inputs so it made the job easier in terms of ensuring that we didn't forget to press record.

@Spiel und Zeug The DEITY connect is a nice system for recording at home. There are less expensive options as well such as the RODE Wireless GO and the Sennheiser XSW-D. My first choice would be DEITY Connect, second would be the Sennheiser, third would be RODE.

I know this video is a bit older, but I thought I'd mention it since you brought up Saramonic and the Blink 500 system. I purchased a Blink 500 system and found it to have a lot of latency. Mine has upwards of 30 milliseconds of latency. I thought it was interesting that I hadn't seen it mentioned in any reviews, so I made a short video about it. Since then I have contacted Saramonic three times, hoping to get them to clarify what the latency spec is, since it isn't mentioned in the documentation or anywhere on their website. The retailer I purchased from lists a spec of 12 milliseconds, but I don't know where they are getting that number. I asked Saramonic if the latency I was getting was typical, or if there could be an issue with my system. I figured that if it was just a defect I would update my video. The only response I have gotten back from Saramonic was a poorly translated one that seemed to imply that if I recorded with a different app or device the latency would go away. That was not true, as even a pair of headphones plugged directly into the output of the receiver has a significant, audible delay. I have since e-mailed them further, explaining the situation and asking for further clarification. I've heard nothing back after several weeks. Did you find a significant amount of latency with your Blink 500 system? I don't remember it being mentioned in your video. As for the Synco Mic D2. I agree with others that an unbiased review would be beneficial. Particularly from someone as well respected as yourself. Explain the situation about the paid reviews and then give your honest opinion. Unfortunately there is very little we can do about misinformation and paid reviews online. But shining a light on it and providing honest information is a good start.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
hi bigtb, I don't recall there being a lot of latency on the Blink500 if I went straight into camera. The review was recorded almost entirely with the Blink 500 directly to the Panasonic GH5 without any post tweaking of the sync. I did not specifically test the latency but did not notice anything which gave me concern. If shooting at 24fps, 30ms is substantial - nearly a frame as each frame is roughly 42ms. But human perception doesn't always pick up sync issues until you're more than a full frame off. So mine may have had that issue as well, but I didn't notice it. I would test now but I gave the Blink500 kit away. I'll be interested to hear if you experience the same latency if they exchange your kit. Best wishes!

@@curtisjudd Thanks. I probably I only noticed it myself because when direct monitoring I immediately heard the delay in my headphones. I often plug in some headphones to check audio when I first set up with a new piece of gear, and the delay in my headphones really jumped out at me.

Curtis, first off thank you for all of your helpful tips and advice and truly non-bias equipment reviews... I carefully follow both of your channels and rarely do I find your work not to be Spot on to what's happening today. I have been fortunate, equipment wise, to have inherited (That's the not so fortunate part) a few "Super Mics" from a dear friend who left us all too early. I have followed through with his dream to make sure the "Equipment" continues to help those less fortunate and deserving of some help. I just finished your "What boom Mic" and the "DEITY HD-TX Plug-on Transmitter" videos. A mic that has come up lately, so much so it may not have made you list. The VideoMic NTG is one I spotted while looking into the NTG 5 for outside sports work I do. I was looking for your take on the B&H # ROVMNTG MFR # VMNTG. Also I have tried something just this week with a Plug-on XLR wireless system (Not DEITY yet). I inherited a Sennheiser MKH 416 and a great aluminum Boon Pole. It's all in the (My investment) Rode Blimp Windshield and Rycote Shock Mount. You pointed out the ability to stay mobile an finding balance with the "Boom Pole". I used the 416 on the shock mount on a boom with an integrated XLR cable. I plugged my XLR transmitter into the base of my Boom Pole. It gave me the balance I was looking for as well as the portability to move around the set with out dragging an other XLR Cable. Your Thoughts, on these to subjects, Please... Curtis, I hope all is well with you... I noticed that you added the Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini to a list of your hardware. I have been using the Roland V-1HD for just over a year and they seem similar with a couple exceptions. One huge one is PRICE, the Blackmagic is priced much better. The other is the Roland has a Dedicated Preview Out, which shows all four sources on one HDMI compatible monitor. Now I'm using this to control video to a 100' Jumbotron on a School Sporting Area (football, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey). I have my primary Camera in the booth and I have 2 students running similar Sony rigs with the Holland Wireless HDMI systems. The fourth is a PC with dedicated lower 3rds and some Full Screen Announcement type things. Before I had the Preview option (Just had a 4 port Monoprice Switch) I often caught a camera pointed at the ground even after confirming over a local Intercom set. I know that Blackmagic does not say it supports this, I think you can preview them independently before cutting over to them. Am I missing anything? That Roland is property of the School system and I considering the Blackmagic for my Personal Gear set-up. What are your thoughts?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
Hi Todd, I think I heard that there is a way to preview, but I don't use mine that way so I'm not sure. My friend Photo Joseph here in RU-vid would be the one to ask. In fact, I think I remember he made a video specifically about that. Best wishes!

Hi Alexander. It is a tough call. The Sennheiser UHF will be more reliable at distance and when there are barriers between the transmitter and receiver. Hi Curtis, Love listening to your thoughts on new audio products 👍 I just purchased the Deity interview kit and found the HD-TX connected to the lav mic seems to have significantly less self noise than the normal transmitter. Did you find the same thing from your testing? I might just have the gain settings slightly off, it’s all so confusing
@curtisjudd

I actually found the inverse. That's the trick I've found with the DEITY wireless products so far - more self-noise than I'd like. One thing is that the recording seems to have less self-noise than the wireless transmission.

Greetings Curtis. I own two NTG3's...would you say it's smart or overkill to slap one on a BMPCC4K? In other words...one NTG3 on a boom pole and the other NTG3 on the camera rig. Just in case.
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions

Hi Javier, Probably overkill unless you're doing a lot of wide shots where you need the extra reach of the NTG3 vs. the camera's microphones.

Hi, I've been using the deity connect for a while and my receiver and transmitters worked fine. However I've just purchased the interview kit aswell and it seems like I can't use both sets without one cancelling the other out. It just flickers between being online and offline. Is there something I'm missing and a way to be able to use both receivers and the four transmitters altogether?

That sounds like you're in a space with a lot of other 2.4GHz activity. I'd turn off as many phones, WiFi access points or routers as possible. You can also increase the latency setting to see if that helps.

I'm not 100% sure how it would apply to reviews posted off-site on something like RU-vid, but the seller policies make it pretty clear an Amazon seller should not offer any kind of compensation in exchange for a review, or offer compensation to change their reviews - sellercentral.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/external/help.html?itemID=YRKB5RU3FS5TURN I've had this before with certain Chinese manufacturers of gear.
