You know why I’m here. My heart is broken at the loss of Christopher Plummer. And then... when he breaks composure during the song and they all come over to help him... oh my goodness. I can’t stop crying. ...Goodnight, Captain.

I was a little kid, but I sobbed when I realized he was saying farewell to his homeland rather than bow a knee to fascism. There was some defiance of Hitler in there, too, when he got a stadium full of Austrians to sing along while under Nazi occupation. Then he took Maria and the children and fled on foot over the Alps to escape. Remarkable! It scares me when I think how close the US came to authoritarianism under Trump. We must remain vigilant, as our grandparents taught us, or run the risk of it happening all over again.

I thought it was very touching how Maria walks over to offer her husband emotional support when he seems to be overcome with emotion at the 1:40 mark. So much in entertainment today seems to show wives belittling or humiliating their husbands in movies and television. Just my opinion.

This is my favorite movie as well. My favorite part of the scene is definitely 1:40 when Maria joins in and takes his hand, and motions for the kids to join her. Especially when Friedrich ushers Gretl in. Especially when Georg motions for the audience to join in. The audience joining in makes the scene ten times more powerful. I’ve seen other play versions and they just don’t capture the magic with the entire audience joining in. And you are 1000% right, the audience joining in shows a sense of nationalism, a love for a country that is about to be taken over.

Today is a great day, a day to celebrate freedom, not from a single rule, but from a more global tryany. We are all one people, fighting for our right to be free, to live as we see fit, free from those that wish to subjugate us to serve them as a lesser class. When we rise together, and yet keep our individually, against those that would force us to a use of their own design to our detriment, we will be strong and free and victorious.

Fun Fact (sort of): Captain Georg Von Trapp killed over 700 men during the war. Vast majority of them when he torpedoed and sank the French Armored Cruiser Leon Gambetta in the Adriatic Sea, while in command of U-5 of the Imperial Austro-Hungarian Navy. He also sank an Italian Submarine with loss of all hands, and perhaps a dozen Allied merchant vessels, with only a handful of fatalities among them. One of his merchant victims was the largest cargo ship in the world at that time. The Italian Collier Milazzo. One of his two commands, the U-5, was ceded to Italy as a war reparation after the Central Powers were finally defeated in 1918. That defeat fractured the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Austria lost all of its coastal territory on the Adriatic Sea, putting Captain Von Trapp out of a job (until he considered a commission in the Nazi Kriegsmarine prior to the outbreak of WWII, which he ultimately decided against, fleeing to Italy, then to the US). The new Republic of German-Austria was landlocked, as Austria still is today. If you've never been there, please try to go. It's the most beautiful country I have ever seen, though I have yet to visit Switzerland :-). Very friendly people, unparalleled cuisine, gorgeous mountains, pristine alpine lakes, and some of the best skiing in the world.

Incredible scene!! Sooooooo moving!! Proud Austrians singing Austria's national anthem one last time. They wouldn't get to sing it again for 7 long years, until Berlin finally fell in April 1945. I find it SO hard to stomach that Hitler, his wife Eva, Joseph Goebbles (Minister Of Propaganda), wife Magda and their 6 children ALL escaped Berlin before the Soviet Union captured the bunker. Goebbles and his family took Hitler's wife Eva and their dog and escaped first, followed by Hitler. They all arrived safe & sound in Argentina, where they and several other high ranking Nazi party members were welcomed and were granted FULL asylum by Argentina's president. They were pampered and they all lived in the lap of luxury at a beautiful 5 star hotel on the coast that was owned by a married German couple who were loyal members of the Nazi party and had given thousands to Hitler's campaign fund. For decades, the world believed that Hitler committed suicide, but, he did not. Worse, United States Navy Intelligence (CIA didn't form until 1953 after Korea) knew full well that Hitler, Goebbles, Eichmen and several others over the years escaped to Argentina. The U.S government looked the other way in exchange for Nazi technology, which was unrivaled at the time. Over more than 80 years, SEVERAL eye witnesses have come forward swearing they saw Hitler, Goebbles and other Nazi party officials, as well as the worst of the worst Dr. Josef Mengale aka 'The Angel Of Death' who surgically experimented on twins (without anesthetic) at Aushwitz death camp. Hitler and his fellow Nazis were seen at the hotel and around town. A year or two ago, I watched an episode of The History Channel where THC was allowed to have a forensics specialist travel to Russia and run some tests on the bone fragments that supposedly belong to Hitler. Not surprisingly, the remains were not Hitlers. They weren't even from a male. The remains belonged to a girl who was approximately 20-25 years old. Probably an unfortunate switchboard operator or secretary. My personal belief is that there's no way an ego maniac like Hitler (and most of his cohorts) would ever commit suicide. Especially Hitler. He saw himself as the savior of the white race and believed it was his destiny to keep the white race pure. Oh brother. Anyway, Hitler had an ego the size of Antarctica and this is not a person who would just kill himself. There was a movie made about Hitler's escape from the bunker that I still haven't seen. The title is 'Grey Wolf: The Escape Of Adolf Hitler'. There's an interview on RU-vid (at least there was) with the producer, Naom Shalev (I don't think the spelling of his name is right) that is interesting.

It’s September 11, 2021. I sing the U.S.A national anthem and recite the American pledge of Allegiance with a sick feeling my stomach knowing my homeland is lost in the same way Austria went down. Biden is president, his mandates put oil workers on the streets, it’s legal for mothers to kill their children, and U.S. loyal military men and women are being filtered out by discharge for disobeying orders that can’t morally be honored or killed in battles their are sent to by the Taliban that President Biden had previously armed. This scene of the movie hurts to watch because now the citizens of my county are making the very same mistake. U.S. Citizens are standing by and letting the deadly purge of patriots happen because they’re afraid to lose their job by standing up against the new dictatorship forming in our homeland. It’s been 20 long years. We stand to “honor” the innocent. Honor what exactly? After two decades we should be standing at their graves victorious knowing that we beat and avenged the deaths of our loved ones. Instead we got beat let the Government use this moment to enslave us and our children. The U.S. is no longer strong. I look at the pictures of the two building on fire with shame. We’ve failed the victims and lost the war.
