Sound of Raw Diesel Power: Loud Locos Working HARD!

There aren't many things that sound quite as awesome, as big American diesel locomotives working at full power. In this vid, we take a look at some shots I've filmed over the years, that capture the true sound of American locos working hard. And no, the engines these beasts use won't fit in your Civic. (Athough one of the pistons might). So sit back and enjoy. There is even a clip of a vintage GP9 locomotive getting some good thrash at the end! Please rate and comment, thanx! :-)
Here's a question for you: Do you prefer the bassy 4 stroke chug of GE locomotives, or the harmonic 2 stroke roar of EMDs? I'm partial to EMD myself.

grew up next to the Katy mainline north of Dallas /Ft Worth in the early 80's, so as you might imagine, the sound of them 2 stroke EMDs will always cause me to have to break out the bib. just standing next to one at idle is exhilarating. makes my heart feel like it's skippin' beats.

when you read "vintage" and "gp9" in the same sentence it really makes you feel old, even if you're not lol

I used to get as close to those raw, thundering, vicious beasts as I dared in my younger days! These newer locos nowadays just don't have the thunder the older ones did. Scare the hel out of you when they came around a curve of a high canyon wall. Man what a feeling. LOL Thanks for an awesome video!! Loved the shot of UP 4014

Or, when they go under a bridge you’re standing on, and the thunderous noise shakes you as the sooty fumes billow up!

You just gotta love the sound of the prime movers revving up in first generation diesels like the GP9. If I had to choose one, I would probably have to go with the bassy GE chug, especially the ones in the Dash 9-44CWs.

In the mid 80s I worked for a company that was funded by the Vapor corporation, we tested on several locomotives at the DOT facility Run by AAR in the desert east of Pueblo and Colorado Springs, I have over 1000 hours of loadbox time, and it never got old standing on a GP40, or GP9 at throttle eight for hours at a time........

I enjoyed your captures as you didn't stay with every train all the way. I get little joy watching endless container pass by. I have less problems watching junk trains with an assortment of different cars, Graffiti, and owners.

The 12 cylinder GEVOs do not sound bad, although they do sound a little sanitized. The best sound is that of the 16-645E3 series EMD engine. That particular two stroke engine has to be the most musical engine I've ever heard.

Great video! I myself am a huge fan of the older EMD's. SD-40-2s, SD-45s, and the GP-38s and GP-40s rule! There is nothing else like them and never will be! I am not a huge fan of the newer locomotives of today at all. No offense to the people who like them. Just not my personal preference. Also, I like the SD-50s, SD-60s, SD-70s and SD-90s as well. especially full throttle in notch 8. I just don't care for either the Dash 9s that they use today or the B40 8Ws. The train beginning at 3:39 is a perfect example! Those two locomotives on the front are awesome! Also at 4:19, the two locomotives after the lead one have that awesome notch 8 sound! I don't care for the lead one.

There is a pretty flat railway about a couple thousand feet from my house. Most of the trains can barely be heard, especially in the day time, but I want to know why some of the night trains are so incredibly loud and shake the ground so incredibly much compared to pretty much all other trains. I swear it sounds like they have three locomotives at full throttle doing 10mph pulling a city behind them.
@TrainTrackTrav
@TrainTrackTrav 4 года назад
Sound travels farther at night due to the cooler temperatures. The sound waves are amplified as they are reflected by the inversion of cool and warm air at night. This is why train engines and air horns sound louder at after dark. This effect is even more dramatic in the cooler temps of winter.
@yashsvidixit7169
@yashsvidixit7169 2 года назад
Also the auto scaling of ears' sensitivity to sound. In daytime, there are many more sounds that makes the comparitively weak audio coming from far. The same reason why a falling steel plate in kitchen in night sounds like all hell breaking loose.

I cannot wait for BigBoy 4014 to hit the rails again! There are quite a few preserved BigBoy locos, so to actually see one run under its own power will be nothing short of awesome! Regarding EMD or GE locos? EMD has been in diesel locomotive manufacturing longer than GE. Over the years they have really proven to be the leader. However, what I like about GE is that their locomotive type designations are easier to understand than EMD. Like in Dash 9-44CW - 9 for 1990s, 44 to represent 4400 horsepower, C for the trucks, and w to denote wide-cab. Take the EMD equivalent the SD75I/SD75M - SD for special duty, I for isolated cab and m denotes a wide-cab but no m in wide-cab....makes no sense to me. Then the 75, it represents nothing accept a newer and larger locomotive than its predecessor, which still runs today, especially on the UP. Each manufacturer has had their share of horrible locomotives - The Dash 8-40B series of GE and the SD45s and SD50s for EMD. The GE had to much power and not enough traction so its pulling power equaled that of the U36Bs. The EMDs were not fuel efficient and suffered major wheel slippage, especially the 50s. I also heard they had quite a few other mechanical problems. I also like the roar of the GE locomotives over the EMD locomotives. So I vote GE.

World's most powerful locomotives are all electric. Even the diesel locos have electric generator run by engine and wheels are turned by electric motors.

All the gushing about 4014 is misplaced. Dragging that relic around with an EMD isn't exactly impressive. Note the lack of smoke. I've never seen the thing actually operating without being pushed or pulled.
@TrainTrackTrav
@TrainTrackTrav 2 года назад
The clip with 4014 in this video was when it was being towed to Cheyenne from Colton, so yes, in that clip it wasnt operating. However, now that it's been restored, the diesel it takes along with it is basically there for braking, switching purposes, and emergency situations. Might want to check out some of the interviews with engineer Ed Dickens. He answers the question as to why the diesel is there in great detail.
