Turn up those speakers! Make your neighbors hear the video! There's nothing like the sound of wide-open 16 cylinder EMD 645 prime movers as they lug a heavy freight up a grade.
In this video, we'll see full throttle and Notch 8 SD40-2's climbing grades on various railroads in Pennsylvania, New York, and Vermont. Train and location information is listed down below.
If you like this video and want to see more like it, give it a thumbs up and subscribe for more, and let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

The sound of pure power... I feel like the howling radiator fans add another level of power to the sound of the locomotive

Fans sure add to that great turbo howl. When I've walked back to check trailing units it is really evident. Dynamic braking gives that same element too.

Love the SD40-2! My favorite Diesel road switcher! The 16-645 sounds so good chugging along at around Notch 4 but wide open they really push out the power. I know these clips are a few years old but I hope that there are still some roads out there daily driving SD40-2's.

I already irritate my neighbors. I have a Peavey TNT 130 (130 watt) bass guitar amp. My son once complained that i made the window in his bedroom vibrate and things falling off the shelf in his room. I suppose if I really want to irritate them more, I could use some ear plugs and feed the line output from my stereo into the bass amp. I use the line out on my computer sound card into the aux. input on my stereo. I do love the sound of diesel-electric locos running at max. power.
@kevinporter6426

Wow dude!, hahaha, lol! Those Peaveys are some versatile amps, aren't they?, I had a Peavey Special 130 for about 15 years, never failed me yet!! Yeah those jokers can take a beating!! Lol!!
@awizardalso
@awizardalso 5 лет назад
@@kevinporter6426 I used to work from the local Goodwill headquarters, first as a bus driver then as a truck driver making pickups and deliveries to the 8 stores we operated. I found it at one of the stores, while working, paid $40 for it and then picked it up after work. It had a dirty gain control that would make a loud pop noise when I touched it. I do electronic repair work and have Caig rotary control cleaner lubricant, that I call 'magic juice'. It fixed the problem. My brother-in-law gave me a $70 Playmate bass guitar that somebody stole when I was working upstairs and left the front door open. My daughter bought me an Epiphone SG clone for Christmas. I'm not a musician per se, but learned to play by ear. The amp was missing a knob but I got one for $1 from a local store that sold drums and guitars and also did repair work.

I think that's the reason the railroad are rebuilding so many of them. Unfortunately, I hear they don't run as well with all the new computer tech installed, but it's still amazing to think 50-60 year old locomotives are still dominating a decent portion of the fleet on Class I railroads.

These just sound so much better than all AC4400 and alike on the UP and BNSF railroads today, it seems the notheast with all its shortlines is the place to be when you like old EMD stuff. The two SW-8s in the Reading and Northern train are a nice spot too. The Luxembourg railways (tiny country wedged in between where France, Germany and Belgium meet) used to have 6 locomotives similar to the SW-8 class as CFL800 but with a more rounded and slightly lower cab roof and European style buffers and hook and link couplers installed, I always liked to see and hear these little machines in action. Besides those CFL800 Luxembourg and Belgian railways used a lot of locomotives powered by either V12 or V16 non turbo 567 engines, but those are virtually all gone beside a small number used on engineers trains or in preservation.

Nothing compares today to that sound when I was a young kid in the late 70's and early 80's. You'd hear a Horn from a distance which could be 2 to six miles away and you'd hear that Hum! Wow! Ex BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe), Ex Ex BN (Burlington Northern) green SD40-2. I miss those units. Back in the days, it's all I would see is green BN loco's. Now most of them are ether repainted to BNSF orange or got sold off to other railroad companies, and sadly some got scrapped. Very rare to see a green Burlington Northern locomotive. HLCX, NCRX, FURX or other leasing companies took over them. Luckly, BNSF kept some of them, untouched and not repainted into the new orange BNSF paint scheme, as well as some EX Santa Fe yellow and dark blue or red and silver warbonnets.

Glorious- although I'm a little surprised you weren't able to include Pan Am back when the bulk of their road power was SD40-2s....unless they're part of a Part Two you have in the works. If it's any consolation, I've been binge-watching train videos from Brazil (some of them only a few weeks old) and a number of SD40-2s and SD40T-2s have made their way down there and are still working for outfits like ALL Logistica, Rumo Logistica or Brado Logistica….although much like up here, newer GEs are starting to make inroads. There's even BB40-2s for the narrow gauge lines in the northern part of the country- basically an SD40-2 with a longer 'porch' and two BB trucks where one 3-axle standard gauge SD truck used to be. Quite the 'kitbash'

I have not done much railfanning along Pan Am, and the MEC SD40-2's I have caught weren't throttling like crazy. I'd like to get up to New England again and shoot some Pan Am, but it probably won't be until later next year.

Whoever designed the connector (knuckle) that connects these trains together must have been a genius. I mean you've got as many as 5 engines connected together pulling a 100 Plus car train loaded to the gills, can't even begin to imagine the kind of force that must be exerted against a very lead knuckle attached to the rear of the 5th engine connecting it to that large a train.

Isn't it something? The dash 2 line was produced from the early 70s to early 80s, and roughly 90% of them are still in service. Almost all that were sold off by class 1s were bought by shorelines. Alot of the Sd40s built from 67 to 73? Were rebuilt into dash 2s.

If EMD want to regain his domination again, I think there is some way to do it : 1. Do the same thing when they built the SD40-2, simple electronics and simple mechanics 2. Develop a Tier IV compliant 710s as standard and an optional 1010s 3. Do what GE does, making customer based services and good aftersales technique As a former GE fans, I could say that lots of railway companies nowadays use GE instead of EMD because of GE's customer based service (like taking complaints and fix it as well as asking what will be the railway companies suggestion to new product) meanwhile make their product better overtime...
