Celebrating the 20 year anniversary of the pivotal album that seemingly changed alternative rock, the guys from Soundgarden gave us an intimate look into their past. From Kim's very first jam sessions in Cornell's room to Ben's Sisyphean task of learning every single cord on just the neck of a guitar. What we heard them say in Guitar Center Seattle was amazing, for fans and musicians alike.

Benjamin Marlatt yeah pretty sad news, but the fact Matt is more famous as Pearl Jam drummer when Soundgarden wasn’t active as a band for over a decade
@ia5662
@ia5662 5 лет назад
I honestly don't even LIKE Matt's drumming in Pearl Jam. He's got zero feel for their original songs, especially the ones they made before him. Pearl Jam has an insane groove that was lost after Dave Krusen and Dave Abrusseze. Matt is EXCELLENT in Soundgarden (and extremely innovative with his beats), that is where he fits IMO. I think he's serviceful, but kind of awful in Pearl Jam. He makes no attempt to play their original songs the way they are supposed to be and the live experience lacks because of that.

+Tom Adams 2 years ago, I tried Soundgarden for the first time and it was difficult, I was barely attracted to them, they were to weird for me... Now they're my favorite band and I consider Superunknown to be a masterpiece, more than music, that album (and that band!) was and still is an experience... I love bands and album where every intruments is highlighted (not sure for the terms, English isn't my first language...) and Superunknow is plenty full of that... Insane music, brilliant lyrics, awesome production, beautiful atmosphere... It's hard to find albums that can match the perfection of Superunknow (Just like Tool's album)

This summer I was lucky enough to have a sit down conversation with Cornell 1 on 1 before his solo acoustic show. He's a big inspiration to me as a musician, and he's one of the nicest guys I've ever met, so down to earth and he took the time to sign my Vinyls and take a picture. It was an amazing experience getting to meet him. We chatted for a good 20 minutes. Last year I flew down to Toronto to see Soundgarden , and it was hands down one of the best live performances I have ever seen. If you ever have the chance , I highly recommend getting out to a Soundgarden show. They do not disappoint!! Legends !!

It's hard to express fully how I feel about this band and what have they brought to my life... but I can say for certain they changed my life. My classmate brought me their "Superunknown" back in the day, 10+ years ago now. And to be honest I didn't quite catch it "right on", it was a struggle. Some songs I liked, some I skipped intentionally. But now when I'm almost 30 I listen to the album and realize how much I love it. And nostalgia has nothing to do with it. It's the quality of the material, the diversity of writing and rhythm approaching, everything. Chris did a lot of beautiful stuff apart from Soundgarden (Audioslave for instance is also one of my most favourites), but this particular record speaks to me like nothing else. I don't know how to say this, but I think I should, cause there's a chance this happened not with me only. I've been listening to this album nonstop for the past few weeks. Everywhere - my iPhone, at home on my iMac, at work on a laptop with some speakers, literally everywhere. Enjoying and thinking about all I have said above... and then I wake up to the news of Chris' passing. It shocked me, it still does. This will take time to think over and live on, but now it is a wound for me, definitely... So, to all the people who read this and feel the same - hang on and may all of us find peace and may Chris rest, which he deserved by leaving the incredible heritage of art in music. Thank you

As big as Soundgarden got I think they were under appreciated in the shadow of PJ and Nirvana. SG were around long before those bands but never really hit huge until 92 and especially 94. I still think they were the best band out of Seattle dating all the way back to the mid 80's. Cornell's ability to write pop hooks is equally as potent as someone like Cobain but Cornell did it with more than just power chords over a distortion box. Cameron and Shepherd wrote awesome riffs straight from left field and Thayil brought some great doom laden heaviness. That band was/is a collective with all parts bringing something great to the table. They were more inventive than any of the other bands, great bands too. They fucked with tunings, time signatures, polyrhythms, arrangements, riffing, and came out with something that can only be the mighty Soundgarden.

I think someone who knows and listens to soundgarden also knows their contributions to other seattle rock bands and wouldn't underestimate them.Those bands were all connected to each other actually, especially pearl jam and soundgarden.. you know the story. But when it comes to Nirvana..yeah they were, i dont want to say overrated, but they were in the foreground definitely. But you can't deny that nirvana kinda pulled attention towards Seattle which is a good thing for other bands.I dont know, i love 90's and i'm just glad that all these people exist. I hate comparing those bands because they are all like a family that i always want to be a part of. Also one more thing, i wouldn't say pearl jam overshadowed soundgarden. They're equally underrated bands if you ask me.

Kim Thayil will always be my favorite grunge guitarist. He has the bluesy technique of Jimmy Page, the heaviness of Tony Iommi, and the alternate tuning textures of Keith Richards. I adore Soundgarden; probably the most technically gifted of the Seattle Sound.

Speaking of “wandering” there was an episode of a talk show called Lex and Terry where Chris was the guest one day on the show, and he was late coming into the studio, so the producer went looking for him and saw Chris casually wandering the hallways like a normal dude. They’ve interviewed rock stars of all walks and said Chris was just that… a normal dude, and they loved that about him.

Just to kind of explain a thing for people so they don't have to look it up if they don't know: the people in this video are singer Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd, and drummer Matt Cameron. At one point in the video, Kim mentions "Chris and Hiro". He is referring to former bassist Hiro Yamamoto, who left the band before Badmotorfinger. Also, Matt mentions "4 or 5 guys in a band", but Soundgarden has never been more than a four-piece. This is because Matt is also a member of Pearl Jam, a band with 5 members, and has been since before the album Binaural, which came after Soundgarden's original breakup.

It's my favourite song full stop. Superunknown also happens to be my favourite album, and SG my favourite band. But Head Down-that's my song. Nothing's ever resonated more accurately, the sound of life, to me. My life, sure. But mainly just...life. Chris's dual vocal personas-protagonist and antagonist: the cold, disembodied, cruel, thin, alien, manipulator. The Tormentor. Impassive; Impenetrable. "We see you smile, we turn your head, then we slap your face. BOW DOWN, BOW DOWN, BOW DOWN TO LIVE YOUR LIFE." So be it. The human response: indomitable will to survive. Tormented. Bowed. Silenced. Stultified. *Alive* A mote, invisible, not even a speck, beneath the oppressive, choking, seemingly permanent abyssal winter gloom. Weathering the storm. Conserving, harbouring, protecting. A lightless glint in the eye, a slightly upturned corner of the mouth. Occulted. For now. Eventually, a spine unfurled, a breath of air, drawn deep into the lungs and held: firmament for the chest & back. Two glinting, shining eyes. A half-smile, no longer hidden. A head held high-exhultant. Like my favourite Soundgarden song :)

Not much of a Soundgarden fan, but I give Kim Thayil credit for keeping track of all those alternate tunings he uses and when to use them at the right time so he doesn't accidentally grab the wrong-tuned guitar. Also, tuning all the strings to E on "Mind Riot" is quite a novel idea.
