The Red Deer River Watershed Alliance has created a short documentary called “Source Waters: The Rivers That Shape Us” showcasing the diversity and beauty of our vast watershed. Starting upstream and moving downstream, we talked to scientists, elected officials, and agricultural producers about the big picture of the watershed.
From tip to toe, travelling across the Red Deer River watershed can feel like visiting different planets. From the braided fast-flowing waters near Sundre, to the starkly beautiful and dry badlands. From the new suburbs of Red Deer (population 103,000), to the dusty main street of Rowley (population 8). Water connects all of these places.
The film follows the waters of the Red Deer River from its true headwaters in Banff National Park toward the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. Filmed in 2020, the documentary provides essential context for those wanting to learn more about the landscapes, communities, and waters of the Red Deer River watershed. Designed for municipal audiences, the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance aims to use this film to spark broader discussions about watershed management with municipal decision-makers.
