I saw maggots in my sour sop when I first tried it. Maybe because it is pollinated by flies?

@@Phyto_Chemicals Most sugar apples contain it, but not in large amounts.. I'd say they're still perfectly fine to eat, I mean apples contain a cyanide in small amounts and that's pretty toxic but people still eat those, they just avoid the cyanide containing parts. Annonacin is used to make natural pesticides I think too, people use the Pawpaw for this in the eastern US.

Its not really about Sanitation, as much as it is the Bacteria and Viruses that are in India. Westerners simply dont have the tolerance/immune system to handle many bacteria strains over there. This is why they tell you to never eat the food or drink any beverages, unless they are bottled, or prepared at a high-end Restaurant that has imported food.

It's a caterpillar, if you eat produce you have eaten hundreds, if not thousands of insects in your lifetime. Same with any kind of flour, oh yeah, chocolate too. The bugs are just the more tame of the contaminants allowed in food in the usa.

Discovered this channel as I've recently discovered this fruit when having a Guanabana milkshake at a local Columbian restaurant here in London and can honestly say, I've have never tasted anything so refreshing in my entire life. I hope you and the soursop kiss & make up one day, it would be such a pity to miss out in such a delicious fruit! :P

I'm eating one for the first time right now. I don't sense any berry flavor in mine. It tastes like sweetened yogurt that has a moderately stringy chewing gum texture. God, I have to chew a lot! At one point, I just give up chewing and just swallow the rest. There are no worms in mine though. I emptied the entire innards into a bowl before consumption.

I'd like to add that you are not supposed to eat the whole fruit. One or two heaped tablespoonful is all you should eat of the soursop. Usually mixed with other fruits to make a smoothy with the soursop taste. Never eat a whole soursop, it is potent!

I love soursop. I had it a handful of times in Mexico. In Mexico it's a special treat-not rare but not super common. They usually turn it into a drink or juice. I never got ill from it. I'd love to try the related fruits if they're anything at all similar.

Man, food poisoning is the worst. I know a few people that don't eat certain foods that are completely fine because of a food poisoning incident despite the food being fine, normally. I got food poisoning when I was younger, we didn't know what caused it, but I'm sure if we did know I probably would not enjoy eating that either.

Jared Rydelek sorry to see your feud with the Soursoup continues unabated ;) Sorry to see that worm spoil all the fun. Don't judge the little guy too harshly, after all, we vegetarians have to stick together! :P In all seriousness THANK YOU for that statement "If you are eating fruit because you are trying to treat an illness-See a Doctor" (I may be paraphrasing due to gappy short-term memory... uh oh, guess I better down some Gingko biloba :P ) I have lived with a chronic illness for nearly 2 decades now, and I can not tell you how many times since the day I first found out in the hospital that I have had well intentioned, but ultimately misinformed people I have had tell me this, that, or the other fruit was the new "Miracle Cure" for everything from Augue to Impetigo and all illnesses between.
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 9 лет назад
izonker, Thank you for that. I've had a lot of fights with people over this subject. Because of my affinity for fruit and being vegetarian, its assumed I must be into all these holistic cures. I really am not. Fruit is great and healthy and can help you in a lot of ways but there is a disturbing amount of snake oil out there as well.

Oh my gosh, let me tell you something. One time I was at a hotel sitting in the lobby because there was a family thing happening in a venue which was really loud due to said celebration. The TV in the lobby was playing some preset programs which just went around in a loop, and then something about the soursop came up. It was unbelievable, it went on and on talking about the fruit saying that pharmaceutical companies wouldn't sell it because "yada yada capitalism, etc." without including any proof. So, in conclusion, never trust a man giving the Rokakaka fruit branch because it'll probably just be a pear branch.

Question. I was always told that, because, it is rather tart, it is common to put a little sugar on soursop before consumption. is this true? I ask because, though I usually do this, a few year ago I happened to pick up a somewhat odd looking soursop in Manhattan's Chinatown (it was a lot paler and whiter skinned that a normal one) and when I tasted that one, it DIDN'T need any sugar, it was fine as it was. Is this common or did I find something a bit odd (I still have its seeds, so I could try and grow them if it is something unusual).

I came across this video as I was travelling down a rabbit hole learning about soursops, The first video I saw was a woman scrubbing soursops and explaining how important it is to clean them. Now, I'm at your video and I see a picture of you posing with a soursop in your mouth (3:09) and sure enough, you got sick. I'm so sorry you had that experience, especially when having to travel. But.. smh. I'm glad you recovered and went on to continue your exploration.

It's one of my favorite fruits and I have never had any issues with it. I feel like just walking through a meat market can give you food poisoning, and the water in India could probably kill you. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, but I hope you overcome your PTSD, don't let it have power over you for the rest of your life. Next time, cut any worm holes off before opening up the fruit, it's usually obvious where the worm hasn't touched. Worms are gross and scary but they don't cause the fruit to be toxic. I hope you try soursop again :)

I really appreciate that you tell your viewers to not rely solely on the latest fad in "miracle" foods if they have chronic and often terminal illnesses like cancer. Medicine has expanded the human lifespan by a lot compared to the days when people foraged and hunted for food in the wild and it should be taken advantage of. There are plenty of snake oil salesmen out there, but your local physician has too much to lose to really be trying to cheat you.

I tried Soursop first at a fiends house where her dad picked if off the tree for me to try. I ate a bit, but I don't like sour things so only ate enough to be polite. My mum who was with me ate the rest becauseshe loved the flavour. This pleased our host a lot. The next day I was fine but my mum was as sick as a dog. I think soursop is good for you in moderation, but you shouldn't try to eat the whole darn thing.

Only ever had the Goya guanabana nectar in a can - never fresh - as a kid. Used to love it. On a side-note, I practically grew up in a cherry-tree that I browsed off of every summer - and there were codling-moth larvae in ‘em cause the tree was never sprayed… I found out if I didn’t LOOK for ‘em, the cherry tasted good anyways and the worm was unnoticeable. If there’s a bug, the fruit is Organic.

On the inside, the soursop looks like a white paw paw. The flesh seems similarly textured and the seeds are the same color and shape, but a little smaller. than a paw paw The skin on the soursop is green and shaped like a paw paw, but slightly scaled where paw paw skin is smooth and green with yellow highlights when ripe. The blossom on a soursop looks like a yellow paw paw flower as well. On the paw paw, there are three central lobes and three outer petals that look like a pyramidal bell before it opens. This is why it is called Asminia Triloba. (Three Lobes). The paw paw flower is burgundy and very unique for the mountains. The soursop is exactly the same structurally (the flower). The reason that I bring this up is that I LOVE paw paw fruit. As a matter of fact, so much that I ate one that was not yet completely ripe. It cleaned my pipes SO BAD that I wanted to die. Deer will not eat the leaves of a paw paw. Guess why? The leaves disagree similarly with animals. You mentioned being ill on the plane, and I pictured you looking at the in flight facility, grimacing, and having a seat. Then all of the sudden a mask drops from the ceiling and a fasten seat belt sign starts flashing, and it hits you...you're going down. When you eat an unripe paw paw, it's similar. I wondered if these two fruits are in the same family and if you may have just eaten one too early. The severity, consistency, duration, and general repetition without losing intensity was like a really bad case of food poisoning, and technically, it was, but not from bacteria. When ripe, I think a paw paw is world class. When unripe, it is phenomenally BAD.

Soursop flesh are white, yours is almost brown(oxidation)... Which means the fruit is not fresh and has been picked several weeks before... Soursop is a summer fruit and is eaten fresh, or two or three days at most after picking... Soursops are hard on the tree and are not a threat to insects bites and for a worm to get that big it must take weeks - eat fresh fruit man!

From the experience of my grandmother trying to grow it, the tree had a very very low yield and the fruit got so big and heavy that it often dropped before it was ready or dropped overnight and the bugs or birds would get to it before we could which is frustrating as it is one of THE VERY BEST tasting fruits in existance to me; It's like banana, peach, strawberry and pineapple, basically like someone put a whole smoothie in one fruit somehow. I prefer it to sugar or custard apples as they can sometimes be a bit mealy and I prefer the soursop acidity over a custardy taste. It seems very susceptible to spoilage though... I'm sorry you had such a horrific experience :( Soursop leaves make the most wonderfully enjoyable tea but the controversy on the health benefits/risks s a bit worrying. It should be an occasional treat.

Sorry, but I think the problem you first had with soursops was not because you got it from an old lady in India. It's because you ate too much of it!! You should eat only a quarter of it, or even less if they're very big. As for the worm, just cut out the part that's black and contaminated. This fruit is delicious if you make a milkshake with milk and a bit of organic sugar added to it. It's a common practice in Mexico. Needless to say, you need to remove the seeds before beating the mixture in the blender. But do not have too much of it. I usually prepare the milkshake in the evening, and will drink about two glasses only. The next day, it will be equally good!

The brown stuff was dirt from when you cut into it. Still, I'm sorry for the torture you endured.

Have you ever had the juice of the Filipino type of soursop? It's the best and is actually my favorite juice (we call it guyabano)

Soursop to me taste like a sour green apple candy custard

Soursop is absolutely delicious I’m eating it now and I’ve been eating it for the last month. I get mine picked off the tree and sent to me fresh from MiamiFruit. .Org. Something else made you sick I promise you I have eaten so many of these and I’ve never gotten sick. I mean literally the woman you bought it from went to the bathroom and didn’t wash her hands and you could’ve gotten so sick from that! Please stop blaming the soursop. It’s such a delicious healthy fruit.

Oh its absolutely not the fruit that made me sick, thats not what I was trying to say. I was trying to explain that I don't like soursop anymore since I got very sick and now have this negative connotation with them. Its a shame really because I did really enjoy it before I got horribly horribly ill.

Katie Mikell Do you think its dangerous for your health like cause parkinson disease like they say. I ordered some from miamifruit to but im scared to eat it !
@WeirdExplorer
@WeirdExplorer 5 лет назад
@@kozygvrl9557 I wouldn't worry about that. There is a compound in the seeds that some say cures cancer, others say it causes parkinsons. I would just avoid the seeds altogether and just enjoy the fruit. Its safely enjoyed by people all around the world.

Weird Explorer Here I am four months later.... my soursop order showed up yesterday. I ate a quarter of one couple hours later with nothing else eaten I got so nauseous I was begging to throw up. Which I finally did after an hour. I’m on your team I will never ever ever eat soursop again, I’m done forever.
