A good citizen stands up for his and his wife's rights after being harassed by an ignorant security guard and yet another obnoxious SAPOL bully. The righteous citizen states quite clearly that he and his wife have a medical exemption. He also states, quite correctly, that they are not required to disclose any further details about their medical exemption.
Upon continued harassment by the officer, they then both furnish the details of their exemptions.
However, the bully SAPOL officer just won't let it go. After being made aware that the couple are not breaking any laws, and even after acknowledging the good citizen is "technically correct" (i.e. 100% correct), he still tells them they should carry a written medical exemption in future, despite no legal requirement for them to do so. The real solution here was for both the security guard and police officer to apologize, wish the couple a good day, and resolve to stop being bullies and instead respect and enforce the rights of all SA citizens to both cite a medical exemption and to keep the details of that exemption private.
Don't count on that happening anytime soon, though: The police despise any law that impedes their ability to bully and unlawfully question people.
It should be further noted the only person who committed an offence during this encounter was the police officer, who refused to provide his identification when asked and instead drove off. Section 74A(4)(b) of the Summary Offences Act 1953 states quite clearly that:
"A police officer who has required a person to state all or any of the person's personal details under this section is required to comply with a request to identify himself or herself, by-
(a) producing his or her police identification; or
(b) stating orally or in writing his or her surname, rank and identification number."
