South Park Is MISSING!

Honestly, I can totally buy Matt and Trey suffering from creative burnout. Every South Park episode takes SIX DAYS to make, and considering everything they've been working on lately, it makes sense for South Park to take a hiatus

Actually, April Stewart who is the voice actress for a lot of the female characters said on twitter that they're going to start production on the new specials pretty soon

Honestly, I think the reason is both burnout and HBO Max. Matt and Trey have been keeping things up for the past years, but they're still human. There's going to be a point where they have to slow things down to get their bearings. Plus, with how HBO Max/WB been treating their animated shows recently, that might add to the regular South Park schedule being halted.

The voice actor for Wendy just confirmed South Park is back in production, So we’ll see what happens 🤷‍♂️

Something I think about a lot with South Park is how stressful it must be to work on it in the art departments. Not only because the people have such tight deadlines, but because it’s South Park. It’s gotta be tough being semi-associated with all the controversies it’s instigated. Maybe the storyboard and effects artists aren’t getting hounded by Scientologists and Islamic terrorists, but it seems you’d still have a lot to cope with.

We also have to take in account with the Writer's and SAG-AFTRA strike.

I am excited for Snow Day to come out (especially with how The Fractured But Whole ended on a cliff hanger) but I am very scared about the games release, hell a reason why TSOT and TFBW were so charming and good was since it felt like you were in and playing an actual episode of the show, and also the fact they both proved South Park works as a 2D game

From what I’ve read the shows been renewed with enough content to last until 2027, so while we’re not getting an immediate announcement, we still know for a fact we have a few more seasons on the way.

It's Weird how South Park has Disappeared but there is no way the show can die with it's iconic status

They're probably planning something BIG for South Park. A show like this wouldn't take such a long hiatus unless something big is being worked on.

In my head, Trey and Matt are just overwhelmed with all the weird crap going on in the world and short circuited with the amount of jokes and parodies they have to do. I blame the world for being too messed up

If/when South Park ends, I hope they end on a movie. (Not one of those “special events” or as I like to call them glorified South park episodes) I hope they end on a theatrical release, just like they did in 1999.

I think it's a timing thing. Not only with the lawsuit but also keeping their specials and episodes for times when it's going to be interesting to rip on stuff. Like, I know their saving two of these events for the election next year, they always do a big election episode. And I wager they are going to make some movies about the strikes or Hollywood this year. Or it's possible they are redoing this contract for legal reasons and we will get six episodes this fall or winter. The main voice actress for the show said production is starting up again, so who knows. I'm assuming we'll hear something in a month or so.

Very good analysis of the issue at hand and thanks for explaining the reason behind shorter seasons (you first revealed it in another video a couple months back, but still). I was worried Matt and Trey would get burned out after doing the show for that long, and it looks like my fears are coming true. I think they visualized how they feel with Randy by making him an extremely unlikable, obnoxious lunatic obsessed with Tegridy no matter how LONG it's being dragged for. I remember an interview where Matt said he doesn't think they'll be making the show when they'll be 60, and although the world would be devastated by the loss of South Park, they're still human.

with them reviving Casa Bonita and developing SNOW DAY! this year, hope Matt and Trey aren’t burned out, I think they’re gonna give us something special for December(maybe a prelude special to SNOW DAY! or maybe A Christmas Carol Special focusing on Cartman and Randy)

I’mma be completely honest, I would be fine if they didn’t release anything, and hopefully have an amazing budget for the next 6 episodes.

Its impressive that South Park didnt got into a downward spiral of bad content (at least for now) like a lot of cartoons got cause the studios refuse letting them die

Other people have already spoken on the overwhelming burnout they might be feeling. Keep in mind, snow days is not the new mainline game as far as I know. The main studio they run and Ubisoft hasn't announced anything yet so they're still working on that.

Is it possible the lawsuit could be putting a stop on creating any of the South Park specials? They may just be stuck in a bit of a legal hold until things sort a bit

Matt and Trey aren’t WGA/SAG AFTRA Members. In fact during the last strike, production of the show wasn’t affected. The thing that bothers me about south park’s absence is that they had the perfect opportunity to take advantage of both the Pandemic and the Hollywood Strikes because of their 6 day production schedule during a time where the production for the majority of shows which take months/years to make were halted. Now would be the perfect time to create South Park with production for every other tv show being halted.

As a Denver, CO native who grew up going to Casa Bonita and it being a sort of right of passage I can very confidently say that it will probably be a massive success as it’s the perfect nostalgia trap for those of us who grew up with it. So many people who grew up on it will now want it to become to their kids what it was for them.

I'm very certain that Snow Day is heavily inspired by Happy Wars, the old Xbox One game. Was such a fun game as a kid and it looks almost identical so I'm excited, 3D or not.

i think what you also have to take into account is that theres a writers strike going on in america which could be whats holding up the specials

Matt and Trey are probably just taking a breather so they can get Casa Bonita off the ground. They finally just got it open and don't want to see their new business venture flop.

I heard Matt and Trey were not supporting the ongoing writers strike. Which I thought would've explained no updates on South Park

They're just waiting on the full Paramount move coming next year. MAX only has rights to the show for the next year, then everything SP goes to Paramount, I feel like when that happens, we will be getting full length seasons again with more specials.

my prediction for this year's specials (if we get any) is that they're gonna focus more on the rivalry between Tegridy and Credigree farms. next year's season finale/specials are probably gonna be a prelude to Snow Day, the same way ASOAAF and Franchise Prequel led into Stick of Truth and TFBW respectively.

They're probably not working on anything South Park because of the writers strike that's going on, and I don't blame them if they are.

The thing about the specials I think a lot of people get confused about is that they aren’t any more work than they’ve been doing for years. South Park prior to 2020 aired 10 episode seasons with a dark week or so every few episodes for a small break ran in the fall. Prior to that they were 14 episode seasons broken up by 7 straight runs in the spring and fall. Now, it’s still basically the 10 episode runs with more dark weeks in between for breaks for the 6 episodes, and the two yearly specials are an hour long, basically four episodes in total of specials. And they’re not really that special that it takes them any more strenuous work to complete, they could easily be aired on Comedy Central and be seen as no different.

They usually announce the specials about a month before they come out so dependant on the strikes, I imagine we’ll get a Halloween or thanksgiving special then an Xmas one. Wether or not they are actually all that connected to the time of year, spreading their releases across the whole year makes sense.

In regards to the whole Casa Bonita thing, them getting involved in difficult, tedious projects solely because it sounded fun at first has been Matt and Trey's signature approach to things. Make the very first episode of South Park out of cardboard stop-motion? Sure! Make an entire feature-length film using string puppets? That'll be hilarious! Still, I wish the restaurant does well when it opens, and that those two keep doing what they love and cranking out the laughs like they did since the 90s. Which, miraculously enough, they have been consistently doing.

writer's and actor's are on strike, so they can't make any more episodes until the stikes are over, also, they've been heavily involved in the south park video games and working to get the restaurant renovated and get it opened

I hope Snow Day turns out good. They have a good track record recently but the change to 3d makes me nervous, and the focus on co op makes me worry it won’t have a single player story. But I’m cautiously optimistic, and if it’s good it will definitely be the thing to make me upgrade from Xbox One.

i think it might be important to mention that there's a big strike going on related to creative jobs? tho they made a whole episode making fun of the 2007 WGA strike in "canada on strike" so i get the vibe the current strike isn't gonna affect the south park episode production lol

i feel like another reason why we arent getting content is because of the writers and actors strike. im sure those writers are apart of a union and matt and trey are apart of sag as well. without those people, you could never make south park. i say when the strike is over, they’ll go back to making the show again

Wow, I didn't knew South Park Takes 6 days to make an episode, i assumed it probably takes at least a Month, but no, i gotta say it's pretty impressive, considering the animation while is very "Cardboardy" is very good! I definitely feel like the amount of stress / creative tolls that happens for writing episodes alone, is grounds alone to justify being burnt out. Not even the art requested, voice work, etc. If we’re getting a game next year, I don’t think I would mind a longer hiatus. Last thing I need is their creative spirit killed off due to overwork. You don’t get a Book of Mormon or Stick of Truth by contract and corporate oversight.

i think it being 3d is fine, they have shown that they game make a south park game in it's style and it payed off amazingly, i think its good that they're still trying to test and experiment with stuff instead of just going with what works

Just thought it should be mentioned, there is currently a huge writer's strike in America and that is definitely why there aren't any new episodes. With the way Matt and Trey write the episodes, I doubt anything was written in advance to actually be animated and air. It could be a burn out thing and just being overworked with other projects, but most likely the lack of episodes is definitely due to the WGA Strike not letting them.

When I saw the footage of Snow Day, I thought it was a mobile game developed to be quick and cheap to make, to tide people over until the release of the next real South Park game. I didn't think it was supposed to be the actual next game.

Writer's strike could also be impacting it, they don't have their scripts written ahead of time and can't write anything new under the strike

Frankly, the most likely explanation for the content drought is the lawsuit which they can't come out and "sorry, you're SOL because we're being sued" because things like this are usually things you aren't allowed to talk about. Seeing as the lawsuit is over contract violations and who has the right to stream South Park, this could easily be accurate. Stone and Parker are *heavily* involved in the series' production yes but they also have teams doing most of the hard work. The seasons are incredibly short for now too so it's not like they have to write, oversee and okay 22 episodes at once; especially with the spread out release schedules. The longest part of the process of creating an animated show is story-boarding and animation; something they oversee but other staff actually do. It could definitely have an effect but not to the extent of a half year hiatus. Plus, if the problems were on thier end, I have no doubt they’d have Warner breathing down thier necks and we’d have certainly heard about it. My guess? They have more waiting to be released but they can't release something in either network due to the ongoing dispute. From what I understand, usually in a content dispute like this, the interested third party (South Park Studios) can't release anything on either because the series' distribution rights belong to both Paramount and HBO but also neither because they're in dispute. It's a weird, demented mess which has left the show in perpetual release hell. Doubly so if the original lawsuit filing contained some kind of cease and desist letter as breaching that would be a major legal no no. For reference, the court documents were filed on February 27th but weren’t actionable until April and, coincidence of all coincidences, the last episode aired a few days before the lawsuit properly began. Unless something's sorted out, or I'm wrong, it could very well mean nothing is released this year until they settle or come to some kind of agreement. Something I strongly doubt they would as Viacom and Warner are bitter rivals and they're likely going to see this through until things *REALLY* start to against one of them at which point they'd settle. That could be months however.

Probably may be due to the 3 fold law suit, in addition for being out of creative material for now. The new game on the other hand is likely something they had been working on before/during the pandemic so it being released now makes sense

i *just* barely got into south park this year (around may). Watched the whole series and movie in about a month. I bought both games, and even played the mobile game for a lil while. I decided to not play tfbw yet once i realized that there was still no set date for the next season. I'm kinda just saving the story for a rainy day.

It's funny you say that the 3d south park game looks like a $5 Xbox live title, because judging by the footage from this video it looks almost like an actual xbox live title called "Happy Wars." The gameplay and top-down perspective look very similar.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the writers guild and screen actors guild of America strike which Matt and Trey are definitely a part of theses unions. So since they’re on strike right now that’s why we haven’t seen new South Park? Still a great video though!

If you think about it I'm not sure if they have any deadline for when the specials are supposed to come out one by one, just a deadline for all 14 of the "movies" to be made. So they mght take a break on them for awhile until they can think of something good for them, or maybe even try to make a trilogy with them. Just funspeculation tho

Another issue with South Park is they haven't been doing full seasons anymore. Seemingly turning a season into 1-3 episodes when they used to be 12-20 or more it feels like. Even with their bs formula they're running with 5 to 6 episodes and then boom a few specials idk.
