This video slideshow documents the visual impacts a 199-foot telecommunications tower introduces to the historic South-View Cemetery in Atlanta, Ga. The tower's builder in 2002 initiated Section 106 consultation on behalf of the FCC and determined that the then-proposed tower would not adversely affect historic properties, including this 200-acre African American cemetery directly across the street. The cemetery is where Martin Luther King Sr. is buried along with many of Atlanta's elite African American entrepreneurs, artists, clergy, and civil rights leaders. The Georgia state historic preservation office commented in July 2002 that the tower would not adversely affect the cemetery and the tower subsequently was built two years later.
