Southeast Asia has managed to outperform key economies this year, brushing aside the threat of heightened trade and geopolitical tensions. In the first quarter, most economies in the region have continued to expand, driven by solid domestic demand. But that does not seem to have translated into bumper profits for the region's largest 500 corporations. CNA's Olivia Marzuki finds out why.

Southeast Asia is quite promising. Large yet young population with a consistent birth rate, mostly neutral in geopolitics, highly diverse culture where most countries are multi-lingual (Native, English, Mandarin). However, the biggest bottleneck and what is likely to limit their growth is definitely going to be Energy. China was smart to aggressively claim 90% of South China Sea because they knew this is where Southeast Asia can get most of its Oil and gas resources from. I hope the ASEAN can unite one day and stand on their own against any major powers that may take advantage of their growth, and will use their weaknesses/bottlenecks as a means of leeching off of their development (looking at both US and China)

ASEAN is already one simply by the virtue of geography, but we must not forget that the reason ASEAN was founded is to prevent the region from falling apart due to the differences of the SEA countries combined with outside forces (it's the US and the USSR during the cold war, now the US and China). It was not born out of commonality but out of necessity. I hope that all parties can keep their cool and take the correct actions. The SEA region must also always keep both China and the US close to counterbalance each other and make the region (and the world as extension) as good as it could be.

In 2022, the ASEAN country which had the highest trade balance of goods was Malaysia, with a trade surplus of approximately 59 billion U.S. dollars. Contrastingly, the Philippines had the lowest trade balance in goods, with a trade deficit of about 66 billion U.S. dollars in the same year.

The PH is a poor country and a low income country with less foreign investment and do domestic loan a lot but they still manage to buy military equipment and built infra projects like subways, trains, airports, ports, skyways, roads and new cities or CBD

Investors are welcome to invest in South East Asia countries. Semiconductor, electric cars, AI, tourism, etc. There are no trade wars in this region. Fun and safe.

However, Southeast Asia is still considered one of the world's poorest regions. The region's major contributors to extreme poverty are the Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos. In 2021, 18.1% (20 million Filipinos) live in poverty. Earning less than USD$205 per month for a family of five. The Philippine government classifies families (of five) earning above USD$205 per month as not poor.

About half the population of China or India, no unified language, 10 different countries with less unity than Europe and different foreign policy orientations - we should be talking about individual countries in Southeast Asia. It doesn't make sense to group them together.

@ocean Europe falling ? In Europe, on the terrace of my villa with swimming pool and cedar 20 meters high, hearing you talk about a Europe in poor health amazes me. The Chinese or Singaporeans who live in buildings of 28/33 floors, in 70m² would therefore be in “good economic health”?
