Southern Chess Squares  

Oh this looks so good! Thanks for sharing the recipe and technique, now I’m totally craving chess squares! I always knew these as gooey butter cake, so it’s always interesting to see how slight variations and different traditions for similar desserts bring unique names.

My grandmother used to make them and she lost the recipe before she passed away and I wanted to make them and it was perfect thank you

I have been making this recipe for over 60 years. It is a gooey butter cake that originated in St Louis, Missouri in the 1930's also known as a Neiman Marcus Cake. The only difference is the addition of one tablespoon of vanilla extract in the cream cheese mixture. It is a favorite anywhere you go.

The original name for this recipe is Gooey Butter Cake first introduced in the 1930's. Chess Cake Squares are entirely different.

Do you cool them in the fridge after baking or sit them out for a couple of hours? & how long is your cooling process? I’m afraid to cut into them too early

My cousin makes these well a form of em I guess it's just the top part there is no cake at all the ones with cake are a little to thick for my liking but I might try these for Thanksgiving I can't find a recipe for my cousins and she will not tell anybody
