Since when does pouring your soul into something Involve being super loud?( yes I get it, he was schmmooving and shit) but for real, no one says that on things 10x harder than this, more emotional might I add
As a Tuba section leader from the 90's, I salute the hell out of Felix. He's passionate about that horn and I doubt he knows how folks look up to him leaving a legacy at the real SUper POWER of the SOUTH!
Jonathan Ellison Yes he made me a full sousaphone nerd my parents just bought me a sousaphones I loved it so much. Then broke it. Oops. Then bought another one a couple days later.
@@deadlybladesmith3093 yeah bro playing high is kinda hard for me but I've started jazz band at my school and I've been playing trombone so it's starting to get a little easier.
Folks who are criticizing tone quality, remember that we are listening to a recording from a device that is not optimized for low brass at that volume and distance. A better mic would make for a beer tone, I’m sure it’s an incredibly powerful sound in person.
Wrong. Loud and ugly is not the way the sousaphone, or ANY type of tuba should be played. Loud can be tasteful, believe it or not. Not that these talentless kids would know that.
That brotha is a BOSS on the Tuba! My range is good, but I could never crank like that! Shout out to him and SU. Been listening to this band via VCR recording, live TV, and RU-vid for over 15 years! I can't wait to see them in Pasadena!!!!!
Remember the horns don’t need to truly be broken in. It’s the players that need to be broken in adjusting to the new horn. Larger bore size and greater resistance. JSU did it and so can SU.
Redd boxx keep at it.. I’ve had the pleasure of being taught by haymer and taylor my years at LLI along with Everson martin (Alcott director) and a few other great directors.. wont ever forget the experience! I should’ve went to college for music but I chose football instead lol
As a former tuba player that's how you play a tuba you make that bad boy you sing through that tuba with passion and you get a great performance and a great quality sound like this
DAMN! Somebody shift that dude the baritone section and stop tripping. They sound like a different band with the brass tubas. I like it. Next year gone be dangerous.
It's October 2021, just here for my yearly fix. I played sax during parade season because I played football but I always had respect for the tuba section.
Anyone that have been around for the last 40 years like I have could honestly tell you there are three distinct sounds in the HBCU band world over the years. The mellow R & B concert sound & arrangements of FAMU & the uptemp, mellophone, intense high note trumpet, precision marching and brass sound arrangements of the Human Jukebox. If you put on a blindfold you can tell which band is which. Many bands in the SWAC and around the country INCLUDING J-STATE are leaning towards sounding like SU over the past 30 years. Many MEAC bands are sticking to their traditional full sounding arrangements. This is why SU always states "Often Imitated and Never Duplicated" The Human Jukebox invented the term "Crank". Many Louisiana and New Orleans high schools adopted this style years ago, which is why many HBCUs love to recruit from NOLA. NOLA high school trumpets learn to play above the register at an early age, especially in the 70's & 80's. Check your history & old videos from 30 years ago JUKE HATERS... hopefully they now have quality brass tubas to match the brass sound.
He’s not wrong, the tubas sound like hot garbage cause all they’re doing is blasting, as does the rest of the “band” if you listen closely. I get that marching bands are made for the point of kind of hyping up the crowd, but they should still try to get a good quality sound, and not just straight up blasting. And those of you who don’t understand, are probably just gonna say that I’m wrong, and shit, but in reality you probably don’t know what your talking about and should get out of this conversation lmao
Southern University ensemble is next to none, whether they play inside or outside. No one can touch them when it comes to clean seemless performance. Love 🇨🇦 🍁
Can't lie I know nothing about band, music or instruments but damn I didn't know you had to work so hard to get the sound. That was amazing to say the least and nobody can knock that effort.
as a tuba player myself, I can say that I wasn’t as good for 3 years. It wasn’t until I practiced for 3 hours everyday and now I’m one of the best in my school. You’re very right about working hard to get an amazing sound, it took everyone in my section awhile to get it. I continue to work hard and it’s paying off really well.
@@devinanddylangamesandvlogs433 we have one at our entire k-12 school .... its me. As a female, it gives you opportunity to surprise more people especially when you’re only technically in one band but I play for all 6. It’s quite a few concerts.
@@jakecousens4182 probably too late for anyone to see. But that music is a bit wrong in a few ways. But the major thing is, it's a half step off most of the time.
Play those TUBAS, boys....ya’ll doin it!!!! Loved it 7/26/2020. Aloha from Hawaii. BEAUTIFULLLLL ON ALL LEVELS. Love this guy on the end here.....FELIX?
