Southwest Airlines Boarding Process | How does it work?

They probably do reserve some positions for those who buy priority boarding. Position 73 is also by far not the worst!

Hi there! I was actually travelling with my parents and my 11 year-old brother, being 14 years-old myself. We actually talked to one of the gate employees, asking them if there was any possibility of upgrading our position so that we could seat together, and we were given that option. However, the other two families there had babies though, but maybe you could ask and see whether the gate agents in your flight let you use it or not.

Not sure it will work for us because I read online at SWA.com that the families option is now restricted (officially) to kids of 6 or less. Will try when I fly with them next week and see if they let us use it to stay together (if we don't get a early enough login). Thank you.

@@flyingaroundtheworldytb Okay, flew on Southwest. We logged in early enough that we were in the second A Group and could sit together. We talked to the agent and they told us during the holidays they were enforcing the rule that the kids have to be 6 years old or younger. At 12 we did not qualify so thank goodness we logged in early enough to sit together. At the end of the A group we sat together behind the exit row in the middle of the plane so it was fine. The only problem was on the flight back, the turbulence was so bad they would not let anyone use the bathroom for three hours. About a half a dozen people ignored the warnings to sit back down and used the bathroom anyway. We did not but some passengers did. One passenger peed in their cup and then rang the steward to take the cup. They did not like either, but what could they do?

Great you could check-in and board early! It is not nice at all when you are forced to sit away from your family because there are no other seats left!

@@dboyd1124 Boarding group A is usually for their frequent flyers program. I believe you can purchase your way into that boarding group. Check it out when you can.

@@dboyd1124 I don’t know the cost. I’m just telling you that I believe there is an extra expense to be in boarding group A. Most of the time boarding group A takes all the aisles. Some people in A have more than 1 person in their party. So they occupy windows and middles and maybe a whole row. But usually all aisle seats get taken in A. All windows get taken in B. Then there is C.

Southwest is a low-cost carrier, so things like this or lack of in-seat entertainment are to be expected. You can buy early bird check-in, which pretty much guarantees you will be in boarding groups A or B. This is usually around $20. Or if choosing a seat ahead of time is really something you need, you can always fly American or Delta or United. I kinda like the first-come first-serve seating because it doesn't necessitate I spend more money to get a nice seat, just that I check in ASAP.

no it’s not. i work for frontier and southwest caters to low income every other airline you pay for your bag and seat

@@ericab2234 I would have to agree with you we had our flight schedule for 5:45 a.m. only to do our check in online and could not retrieve our boarding pass they had the audacity to put us on a standby list and once we arrived to the airport to do our check in they had the audacity to tell me there isn't enough room on the flight and the nerves to give us a later flight for 10 hours with to layovers with a fully paid fare so you inconvenience my husband and myself to accommodate someone else totally disappointed with Southwest and to mention my husband was in need of a wheelchair and I was in need of assistance due to I had shoulder surgery

@@antionettehartley1584 standby is on every airline unfortunately if you buy your tickets late they have the “right to do it”. i think it’s complete bs and for them to put a wheelchair assist passenger on standby is just bad employee-company communication. i am sorry on southwest’s behalf, and i hope you find an airline that treats y’all right !

Discriminatory? How did they book in the first place? You lack logic.

I think that you must have to check-in for the two flights separately. Anyway I am not sure, as I didn’t have to make any connection with them.

Flying Around the World you just stay on the plane or just get off to the next one

Your automatically checked in for both flights when you check in for the first. The crew knows wheter not there are connecting pax and if they are continuing or changing planes. If you are continuing you are allowed to stay onboard in your seats and if your connecting youll go to the new gate and go through the boarding process again but for a different flight

Had two flights with them and one was cancelled as well. However, they handled the situation perfectly. Have good memories of Southwest and would definitely fly them again.

Hey there! If you want to access the cockpit, you might have to ask the crew to see if they let you in prior to departure or after landing. To get a decent window seat you must have a good boarding position. Boarding group B12 will probably let you snatch a window seat on the back half of the plane. Good luck tomorrow!
