@@dpm-jt8rj The way I've gotten these tours was that I know some employees in their NOC who helped me arrange the tour. They don't give tours to the general public that I'm aware, so you do need some sort of employee connection to visit these airlines. Or become a student pilot and then nearly any airline will invite you to an open house for a fun tour Recruitment of pilots has really changed recently, and more and more airlines, especially smaller ones like Envoy and PSA, are opening up their facilities through open house days at their company headquarters.

OK, I found my dream job! The NOC at WN! I'm not an FAA dispatcher, but that would be my dream job certainly. Are those FAA registration numbers on the moving sims? N201, et cetera? That was a really nice tour, thank you. Really nice P.R.

You're welcome! The numbers on the simulators tie into a master FAA database of all simulators in the country of this level. Specific airlines get simulator-number specific approval for their flight crews to train in them. Some airlines and/or training schools allow other airlines to rent time in their simulators.

Thanks, I had some difficulty in editing this one because one of the two tour guides told me (after the tour was ended) that he did not want to be in ANY of the finished video...so the editing was choppy! I'm trying to improve though!

Is that WSI Fusion SW uses for weather? What program does Southwest use for flight planning and performance calcultions?

Yes, they use WSI Fusion. Their flight planning and performance are all in-house developed programs that are their own proprietary systems.

Wow, that first employee that is featured in NOC sure knows her weather. Do you have to be an actual accredited meteorologist to have that position or did she just go through a lot of other training specific to that position? Also, kudos to the guy who she was asking questions to for actually knowing his stuff.

Yes, she's actually an aircraft dispatcher FAA designated examiner (called a DADE) so she sure does know her stuff! You do not have to be a meteorologist to be an aircraft dispatcher, but most of us are very into knowing aviation weather!

Learning weather theory is pretty much 50% of the dispatch course you’ll go through at any FAA certified school. The remaining meat is regulations and applying them. Most schools also offer extra courses for ETOPS, EWINS (which is what lots of Dispatchers get as padding for their CV- certified to create a weather report and dispatch based off of it) and AIFP.

So, interesting! This has really got me thinking about dispatching! I've been around aviation for most of my life but never really considered dispatching. Do you see the demand growing or shrinking in the future? Any tips on learning more about the realities of this job before I think about investing money into the licensing? I'm 51, btw. Hope that's not too late! Thanks for making these videos.

Hello! I’m glad you’re interested in dispatching!! I believe the demand for dispatchers should continue as aviation is forecast to continue to grow (Boeing and other projections) and dispatchers are unlikely to be replaced anytime soon. Even if someday the pilot crew is reduced to one person or even zero on board - with the aircraft controlled remotely - big IF there - I believe dispatchers will be retained for the monitoring and planning functions. I’d suggest if you know someone who works as a dispatcher, see if you can job shadow for a few days so you can get a good preview of the work before you decide to go to school for dispatch. The other great thing is that dispatch requires no FAA medical and has no mandatory retirement age. The oldest dispatcher has worked well into his 80s! So you could still have a long career if you wanted to do that, even starting in your 50s.

The NOC is in the TOPS building, I believe. TOPS is Technical Operations.

@@LauraLaster747 The NOC is the Network Operations Control, which is in the TOPS building. TOPS stands for Training and Operational Support. It houses training for ground ops and inflight, as well as the NOC.

@@isaacpestpreacher5175 I am told that long ago, the simulators at SWA kept breaking. The maintenance guy's solution was to hang a rubber chicken on the sim to keep it working (maybe keep "gremlins" away??) Apparently, when they moved the sims at one point, the rubber chickens did not get moved, and the simulators started breaking again. They replaced the rubber chickens, and the sims got better. Now it is some kind of company lore about keeping rubber chickens around to keep the sims running well.
