Here we are sowing a few lettuce for planting out later. Sowing lettuce in pots at two or three week intervals will give you a continuous supple of lettuce for planting out on the allotment or in the garden. Lettuce is not considered when planning the crop rotation so fit them in where you can. They are not a fussy crop but do like a humus rich soil and good sunshine. There is no need to germinate lettuce in heat as they are quite happy germinating in cool conditions. If the weather is very dry regular watering will help prevent them going to seed. The variety we are sowing, Lollo Rosso, is a loose leaf variety, we will also be doing sowing cos varieties and butterhead. The main enemies of lettuce are slugs and snails.

How much is too much water? I’m growing Lollo bionda indoors. It has sprouted in the past 3 days and looks a bit like a single cress strand. I’m watering it but don’t want to drown it.
