Hi friends!
I today’s video, we are starting Stock for cut flowers. I like using soil blocks for sowing Stock. I was reminded by one of YOUR comments that separating the blocks into a smaller section is a great idea when you do not need 20 of one plant. I did this last year but I had totally forgotten that I did this until one of you reminded me in the comment section! Keep those encouraging comments coming!
Stock is a one and done as a cut flower and can be planted out in your garden space 2 to 4 weeks after germination! (be sure to harden off your Stock seedlings before planting out)
Last year, I covered my Stock for a few nights after I planted it out in mid March.
I really enjoy growing Stock and I think it makes a really great colorful Spring flower!

Nice having a germination closet 😊. Thanks for sharing more on the soil blocks.

It just dawned on me Renee that I could use that closet as a germination chamber! Of course I had to take out some of the grandies toys for a bit but they don’t mind ☺️ Thanks for watching!

Hi, soil blocking is such an awesome way to start seeds. They grow so healthy. That dusty miller plant is gorgeous!!!!

Hi there! I agree, soil blocking is a great way to start seeds and establish a healthy root system! The Dusty Miller was from last season and I stuck it in the unheated greenhouse because I wanted to dry more of it and also use it fresh in Christmas arrangements. I’m so glad to have it and I’ve cut on it quite a bit over the winter! Thanks for watching!

You’re welcome! It just dawned on me earlier this year that the closet stays cool enough for germination of certain seeds. And as I said, the Ranunculus did great and loved it in the dark, cool closet!

Hi Bobbi 😊 I’ve never grown Stock but have a bouquet of them I got from Trader Joe’s by my favorite chair. It’s been about 10 days and they are still fragrant. Love those blue ones. Thanks for sharing 😊❤️

Oh wow Vicki! Believe it or not, I didn’t keep any Stock blooms for myself so I wasn’t sure how long they last in the vase. That’s good to know! I absolutely love the smell of Stock! I’m happy you found some to enjoy. I wish we had a Trader Joe’s closer to where I live. They are all down in the “city” close to D.C.💕🌸

Hi Bobbi! Glad to see you are growing stock again! I’m trying stock again for the third time and I’m hoping good results this time. My stock seedlings last year were stunted. You gave great tips in this video and I went back and re-watched the video where you harvested them last year. ❤

I agree...more blue! (or purple in many cases 😂) I've never grown stock, maybe I'll give it a try someday, they say it smells really nice.

Good morning Bobbi! Some how I have missed your posts so I have to look at this morning. I have never grown stock and you make it look so easy. Maybe I should get some seeds! I live in NE Indiana and I woke up to snow this morning. We are so behind on the snow so this was a nice treat. Have a good day!

Ha Ha, I agree but when I was editing the video, I thought “I could have at least made myself look more presentable.” ☺️ I had just come from checking the cows and they don’t really care what I look like!

After seeing the stock in your garden last year, I decided to plant stick this year. So looking forward to it! If I can keep the critters out! 💐💐

Oh that’s great! Stock is such a fun Spring flower! Try spraying some Repels All around the perimeter of where you plant them. That may help. It’s not harmful to animals, it just smells terrible!

Bobbi I have a couple questions, any tips on getting tiny seeds placed in the block? I wet a toothpick and it picks it up but sometime hard to see if they placed when they are dark. Also when it says they need light to germinate do you leave the light on 24/7 until germination? Thanks.
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain
@GardeningOnTaylorMountain 5 месяцев назад
Tiny seeds such as Snapdragons can be tricky! I use a small aluminum tray to spread the seeds out in. If you are picking them up with a dampened toothpick and you see the seed on the toothpick and then transfer it to the soil block, most likely it’s on the block. You can kind of roll your toothpick around on the soil block to help get the seed to the block. I do not leave the lights on 24/7 and sometimes I don’t even put them under lights until germination. When a seed packets says “needs light to germinate” that means just don’t bury the seed with soil, sow the seed on top of the soil. However, it won’t hurt to place them under the lights for 14 to 16 hours per day. Also, certain cool flower seeds do not like bottom heat while germinating such as Snapdragons and Stock. Check the seed packet to see the recommended temperature the seed likes to germinate at. Hope this makes sense and helps!

@@GardeningOnTaylorMountain oh wow, didn’t realize that about the lights. Thanks
