RIP Martin Landau. Watched this as a kid growing up in the 70's.

The Eagle space shuttle is the best designed, most realistic scifi craft ever.

I used to watch this show when I was a kid in the late 1970s and 1999 seemed like a long time to come. But now it's 2017 and now 1999 has now come and gone 18 years ago.

This had to be the best sci fi series ever, great cast, series 1 theme a classic, the eagle was awesome I wanted to be alan the eagle pilot, takes me back to a good childhood, my daughter was born 1999 where does the time go........

Many of the tributes of Martin Landau seem to be focusing on the movie roles he played later in his career, which of course brought him great respect and acclaim. But its his TV work that I best remember him for.

Dear Martin Landau, Thank you for all those great episodes of "The Twilight Zone", Mission: Impossible", "Space:1999", and "The Evidence". You were were a terrific actor, family man, and teacher. Rest In Peace , Mr. Landau. (June 20, 1928-July 15, 2017). Respectfully yours, p70581 from Detroit.

I watched this sometimes. Most of the times we as kids (in the 1970's) were outside getting up to mischief , building rope swings, dens and building dams down the nearby stream/brook...When we came back from our adventures, we would love watching this show, but we didn't mind if we missed it...The next day was another adventure, just like space 1999...

I had to listen to this theme one more time. It was a great t.v. show! Rest in peace Mr. Landau

17 years ago today. Hands up if you miss the Moon!

A well-crafted intro. The rising drum roll over the last shot of the cold open ramps up tension, the orchestra bursts in sounding big over the very stark graphics of Bain and Landau against reversed-out black and white, and the funky blaxploitation guitar sets up a fast-paced copy of the Mission: Impossible intro teasing brief glimpses the upcoming episode.

Loved this show! There was an episode where they found a scrapyard of abandoned spacecrafts that was inhabited by a giant space squid that would suck people in and spit out their corpses, pretty scary back then.

I would love to see this show remade. Space 2099 or something like that. Instead of a nuclear blast, have an experiment with wormhole tech that accidentally plucks the moon out of orbit and across the universe.

A show I remember watching with my dad. He passed away in 1978.

I grew up with this programme! Happy memories !

The intro theme is much better here on season 1 than season 2.

Always gave me goosebumps still does. I still watch my box set.

0:16 - THIS part of the intro ALWAYS creeped me out, back then (when I was a young girl) and today... the Eagle spinning out of control and crashing, the pilot losing his life. The music accompanying it really hit the spot!

Great series. When I watched it the future seemed so distant, now it's a distant past.

Looking through my old favorite TV theme tunes from the 70's and there are FAR too many RIP messages - very sad! The music was brilliant though! I forget how good some of the music was before synths and computers took over TV themes.

Loved this show. I had such a crush on Barbara Bain!! I made models of the Eagle spacecraft. To this day, I still think the design of the Eagles are cool.

How could the show ever live up to the epic intro? It's like someone said ''I want 2001 A Space Odyssey in under a minute''.

I was happy with just the intro.

You know I used to love this show when I was a little kid, the funky intro, the cool sets and never missed an episode. Yet for some strange reason I can't remember what the show was about...my goodness has it been that long

Space: 1999's Season 1 theme music remains one of the Best TV sci fi shows themes ever! Way better than the Season 2 theme IMHO.

I found it incredible as a young boy, that the near future included space travel & disco music.

Love this series. I was a 12 year old kid when first time saw this in 1999 when a tv channel broadcasted it here in Finland first time after 70's, I think. Some episodes were pretty scary, still are and thats the point. No cgi, real models etc and that atmosphere in it. Season 2 was crap though.

Ah the 70's where the future is depressing and humanity is doomed, you got to love the recurring themes in every sci-fi that came from the 70's

Great quality of the original intro.thanks........love the rolling drums at the beginning as Dr Russell looks worried.....the big band sound as you see martin and barbara.......then the crescendo as the eagle crashes and the funk kicks in........plus the slightly sad sounds in the middle before it all kicks off again......brilliant theme tune but did prefer series 2 for the on screen appearance with koenig firing his laser dr russell strutting through a doorway....the Red Alert flashing neons and the mission impossible style of screening typing to tell the audience what happened....NUCLEAR EXPLOSION......MOON PULLED OUT OF ORBIT etc.......loved it.

Loved this show and that theme song. Certainly a different vibe than Star Trek, a bit weirder and darker. I used to have a model of that ship.

This music and intro deserve an Oscar.

I LIKED SPACE 1999 WHEN I WAS KID IN 1976. BUT LOST IN SPACE WAS THE BEST, AND IF YOU STAYED UP LATE YOU AT NITE BACK THEN YOU GOT TO SEE GHOST STORY, AND THE NITE STALKER THIS WAS THE BEST ,HE ALLWAYS LOST HIS CAMERA AND HE JUST LIVED TO SEE THE NEXT EPISODE.

Pure intro magic-tastic. Puts all others to shame.

It was a grt show to watch growing up better than what the kids are watchin now and people it's just a show which made you think as a kid what could be possible in yrs to come.

One of a few TV shows from the 60s and 70s that didn't quite live up to its epic theme music.

Sorry if this has already been posted but too many comments to scour through. A little piece of trivia:. The intro indicates the date of the breakaway is September 13, 1999. Barbara Bain's birthday, according to IMDB, is September 13, 1931.
