Hello Everyone,
Welcome back to the channel! Today i will be talking about what decisions I made when designing all my large grid hydrogen ships, some of the problems i encountered, and what i did to solve those problems in later designs. All my ships were designed for single player, so keep that in mind :). Here are the links to the ships featured in the video, feel free to check them out :).
If you are interested on seeing a full ship build from start to finish, check out the following series.

My first “ship” was just a slightly redesigned drop pod from the moon with a drill head. Came here looking for tutorials on how to improve that or even making a small freighter, and just hearing “very basic” on the first one makes me think my genius level is door knob intelligence. Very impressive.

A warship doesn't need to carry a lot of cargo. That's what cargo ships are for. They're also not designed to be colony ships landing on other planets and setting up a base. What you might want to consider is building a ship JUST for that purpose. You're obviously very good at designing ships so it wouldn't be difficult for you.
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Yeah funny thing is, I never wanted it to be a warship lol, I learnt alot from that ship. The Atlas is now my cargo ship of choice :). The Manticore worked OK as it has a large cargo container and can hold 1M kg of cargo on the alien planet but it definitely wasn't optimised like you said lol

Something i like doing in my hydrogen ships is when conveyors are too long i replace the conveyors with hydrogen tanks to still have conveyors but also extra hydrogen storage

Yeah thats a very good idea :) I really should go back to a few of my blueprints and change them up since they added that block :)
@Gottaculat
@Gottaculat 3 года назад
I usually replace them with O2/H2 gennys. Nobody likes waiting for H2 tanks to fill, so if you can cram those into many places where conveyors would go, it makes rapid refueling possible. Eats a lot of power, though, so O2/H2 gennys should be grouped and turned off when not refueling. You should have AT LEAST 2 O2/H2 gennys per large H2 tank. I'd actually recommend 4 per tank.

You might use a couple less conveyor junctions on some of these. They slow the game down more. Everytime an item passes through a junction the game checks every side of it to figure out where to send stuff. Even when most of the sides of that junction are empty. The tubes tell the game exactly where the cargo is going, so they slow the game down less.
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Yeah I have mentioned this somewhere else in one of my videos, pretty sure it was the How to Build a Large Ship Series lol. But you are correct, it does slow the game heaps!! I wish they made vanilla conveyors that were the shape of a block and were air tight, that would be awesome 👌😁

Loved the video. I really just got making my first real frigate and I realized watching this why nobody puts the bridge in the nose like I just did. The nose is likely to take a lot of hits so you armor it and move the windows on top near the rear. Meanwhile I was designing in my head some shutters... I don't think my frigate will be a failure though. It's fuel and thrusters will be in 4 nacels set outward from the core body. Each with a power pack, gyros and heavy armor plate facing outward from the body. So instead of full body armor I got shields and if I lose a nacel I can still maneuver with the rest. This is based off watching some other channels that described frigate and destroyer warfare as "spin to win" so my idea was to have these arms out there, spinning to deflect the incoming fire from the core body and the weapon systems as well as their conveyors. Because the ship will be fighting at angles to the target I'm glad my bridge design isn't as flawed as I worried seeing your video but if I make a more traditional ship I'll definitely have to follow your lead.
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 2 года назад
Thanks man 😎👌. I mean you can put the bridge wherever I guess, the nose makes sense if you have the bridge on the bottom portion of the ship at the front for ships that land on planets a lot 😊. It's always a good idea I think to have a secondary bridge somewhere else in the ship though in-case the main bridge is destroyed, and in that case you can put the bridge anywhere really 😊

@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Thanks mate, really appreciate it :). In the Manticore? Yeah basically there are 4 gravity generators in the ship, the two at the front effect either side of the ship, and the ones at the back do the same for the back half, CIC and Bridge. I done it this way so that the gravity field would not extend beyond the walls of the ship, so if you were flying another ship near it, it would not be effected by its gravity generators.

For the combat ships that you want to have a good balance between durability and mass/space, would it make sense to make the hull predominantly out of light armor and then reinforce it with heavy armor ribs or spines and maybe spaced light armor skirts and decoys? I only picked up this game recently and have yet to design a large vessel, but have been doing some research regarding designs.
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Yeah spaced armor is great for defense as it spaces out the explosions from other blocks, I think there would be a bit of a trade off when you encounter gatling turrets though. Decoys are a great way to divert fire away from critical areas too, im not sure if you can bury them behind other blocks, if you can you could bury them in a cube of heavy armor 🤣. Ive seen people use decoys like chaf or flares so they jettison a whole bunch of them around the ship, or launch them on rockets. Most of my experience is in survival if im being honest, my ships do well against NPC's but im not sure about PVP lol.
@paulalex19
@paulalex19 3 года назад
@@TheGarageGamer86 I only really play single player anyway so that's fine by me. And yes actually from what I've seen decoys do seem to work when positioned behind other blocks. Turrets seem to target functional blocks on an enemy grid and do not care what is in the way, including armor, and from what I can gather their targeting logic considers decoys to be a top priority functional block. Maybe a good design technique to improve survivability would be to design protrusions to the ship using thin armor spokes in several areas (several spokes just in case one or more get blown off so the whole component doesn't just float away), then creating thin skirts using light armor or catwalk pieces attached to those spokes, and then encasing decoys with a heavy armor shell possibly one or two blocks thick in strategic locations, preferably ones with as few possible intersecting vectors from enemy projectiles to the rest of the ship as possible. I might try a design like that.

@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Thanks mate :). I always start with the outer hull first and then build the interior :)
@Gottaculat
@Gottaculat 3 года назад
Outer hull is good if you're going for a certain look. I find you can make some pretty neat stuff if you start with the key systems you know you'll need, and build around those systems. It really all depends what you want the ship to do. If it's a transport/carrier, build your desired hanger first. A war ship, the hull, thruster, and weapon arrangement are a good start. A jump ship, start with jump drives and batteries. A cargo ship, start with cargo containers and your conveyor system. I think you get the idea. Mostly, find what works for you. Another interesting method is the salvager approach, where you graft derelict ships together, creating a mega Frankenstein-like ship. And I don't mean grafting intact ships, but heavily damaged ones, even with 50% or more of the ship missing. It'll give a unique yet familiar form, and you can of course add to it to smooth out the transitions, repaint it, and make it a truly one-of-a-kind monster. I actually used this approach in the "Learning to Survive" scenario in order to build a powerful ship with the limited resources made available in that scenario. Of course, such ships are rarely pretty, but they do fit the scavenger look, which some people like.

Considering your heavy amor ship is fully heavy metal.. You dont need to cover everything in heavy amor only critical parts and the rest of the ship you can ether build 2 blocks wide hulls or a hull with a bock a space and a block called spaced amor. The first one is good against normal gatlin gun fire the second one fits against rockets

Also the airlock issue is the first thing I'm writing program aka a script for. The idea is a program that reads the state of signal lights in tbe ship. You approach the door. The sensor triggers a red light on. The program running its loop notes the light is on and then begins cycling the airlock that the light is attached to. Then it turns the light off when the cycle is done. Repeat when you approach the interior door. Just as you recommend on having a library of ship platforms to draw upon for solutions the idea is I'll create one computer for every big ship and pull from a catalogue of functions. So I'll have the airlock function. A function for a basic autopilot to get you off a planet surface (it's always tedious watching gravity levels and scaling the throttle with it so you don't waste fuel.) Then for each ship computer I pour in the functions needed. The auto lcd program from the community that I always use will be its own separate computer as I haven't a clue yet how that thing works lol
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 2 года назад
I believe there is already a script that facilitates a similar function, although it does require you to open the door in the first place rather than it being activated by a sensor., check it out here -😎👌 - steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=416932930

It seems from what I can gather is it locks one side of the airlock to prevent a full vent but it doesn't handle controlled depressurization which is a big problem. Maybe one day I'll roll on by to share the results!

Not too shabby. Quite the Jack of all trades. Personally, I'm addicted to jump capability, and as a result I came up with this fellow, though the Mk. VI is out of date, but is the most recent version I've uploaded: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2140994596 It can do 16,000 Km jumps, and still over 12,000 Km jumps with cargo. VERY light ship. People give me shit about it being so light, but it's not a direct combat ship. Think more of a smuggler ship, even capable of launching GPS guided cargo "missiles" from space to planets without the use of antennas. It's greatest defense is its insane jump capabilities; you can't shoot what just jumped several times the distance most people's ships can jump. Also makes going from Earth's orbit to Pertam for some milk and eggs less than a 1 minute round trip! 10 seconds to jump, 40 seconds to pick up cargo, and 10 seconds to jump back! The Mk. VII deleted the missile bay in favor of a rover bay. The Mk. VII will maybe be released to the public this week. Been working on this thing and using it in online survival quite successfully for about 2 years now. It's also surprisingly maneuverable, quite capable of dodging enemy missiles while you initiate a jump. Would be cool if you checked it out; I have some interesting tricks up my sleeve you may find when looking it over. ;) I subscribed to your ship, and will check it out when I get home from work. I always love exploring other people's ships, as I often find some inspiration for my own in the process!

Yeah you can make movies on the game, there are a few around the place, and you can play multiplayer in two ways, so firstly you can host a game from your PC or you can have a server host the game, you can rent them from people like GTX etc.

@TheGarageGamer86

Nah no people I'm afraid, all the people you see in the game are in multiplayer. You can add NPC's in the form of ships that shoot at you and that you can loot, but they are all run by scripts. So you can get a mod called Modular Encounters Spawner, and from there you can get extra mods ontop of that like assertive installations where it spawns enemy bases that send drones after you etc.

Lol, yeah they are quite large, although some on the workshop make these look like fighters 🤣. I do like smaller ships because of their ease to build and the low amount of components you need to build them, especially earlier on in the game 😁. That's the primary reason I built the Pilgrim, just a simple ship to get me to space and grab a few resources. The manticore and Atlas were also created before the Hydrogen rebalance, back then you needed heaps of fuel for them! Now you only really need 1/3rd the amount of tanks as before 😲😲

@TheGarageGamer86 Год назад
Wow, 54M KG that is massive!! Yeah that slow drifting downwards is caused by ships that are docked up to the main ship via a connector, the inertial dampeners do not compensate for the weight of ships on connectors, to get around it you'll have to use merge blocks. I don't know if the same thing happens when you use sub grids though, I haven't done any testing on that, but it's likely the same story.

@@TheGarageGamer86 i just watched your video about the big rovers, you talk about how gyros can stabilize your rover in...uhm... midair XD aaanyway pls look at videos of Elite: Dangerous, and how their SRV works. short story shorter: they have 6 wheels, and 8 thrusters. 2 big ones to lift the car, and 6 on the wheels to have 3 degrees of freedom for midair control. i think thats far more creativity affirming than just a reactionwheel for this
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 2 года назад
@@CMDRunematti oh the gyros also play a role when you angle the rover on the side of a hill, it can even stop it from tipping over, you can even get the centre of gravity past the edge of the wheel and the gyros will prevent a roll. I'm quite content with the way they work in Space Engineers, this game is more about building things rather than hard-core science like KSP 🙂. I think the focus here is more on creative freedom. Yeah the speed limit is a bit meh, the 250m/s mod is quite stable from what I've seen, Kenjashi used it for ages and it was stable. They probably put that restriction in there for lower end PC's 😉
@CMDRunematti
@CMDRunematti 2 года назад
@@TheGarageGamer86 i unnderstand its for gameplay and creativity reasons, dont get me wrong! but just as in some superhero movies, whne you learn how something works and its not like that in a game or movie, you will feel a deep disappointment. i find KSP a bit haphazard too :) but also a great game, dont get me wrong! im just very ccriticcal about these things. and about that roll thing you mmentioned, ye, thats a way to use reaction wheels, but...in SE, the gyros can do that indefinitely, if im correct? the reaction wheel would speed up more and more just to keep the roll in the same place, until theres no more RPM to get and you fail. heres a solution for the speedlimit, unlikely that it get implemented, but: you know how there "c" and as you approach it you need more and more energy to accelerate? relativity and stuff : D. well that energy you keep putting in, turns into mass (kinda). in reality 20% c is hard to achieve with rockets and thrusters. so my thinking: set c to 500 meters per second, and apply relativistic math to the moving vehicle. this would mean if you even hit the speed limit at all, your mass would be bigger (you wont just waste thruster power) and still not go too fast for the PCs. this would enable gravity assisted bombing (more mass more damage) or big rail gun kind of things shooting a couple thrusters that get their destructive power ffrom the speed and mass they aqcuire when accelerating. sorry for the long answer....what do you think? i also understand if youre not interested in thinking about it

These ships aren't particularly good for atmospheric flight. In fact, particularly for the big one and the armored one, their primary mobility should be jump drives and being the emperor in the zone: very gunny, very slow, and tended to by smaller ships. The guns are also overkill for anything I've seen in PVE so far, unless most are dedicated point-defense. Atmospheric 'destroyers' are a whole different design, with guns on the bottom and atmo thrusters.
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Nah they are mostly setup for space, or for going from planet to planet with a boat load of cargo. The Manticore was the first large ship I ever built and it was kind of designed to take me to another planet but also be strong enough to take a few hits. The Pilgrim is like a starter ship, I set it up to carry a small miner to space, basically get myself some uranium and platinum and thats about it 😉. I only really have one large grid atmospheric ship but I haven't released the blueprint for that, it's basically like the Pilgrim but the first version of it.

Nice but large block ships are a waste of resources, time and effort. Small block ships are easy to take to space ESPECIALLY when using mods for hydrogen/oxygen tanks and converters and MUCH better engines. Great designs, very aesthetically pleasing but this "strictly vanilla" puzzles me because its so limiting . . . . . So many players do it and then complain about how limiting it is. Splitsie does great ships and bases but good lord he has to make so many design compromises in design.

Why do people make large heavy slow ships when I can make a Dragons Claw MK7-2 that’s large, has strategically placed heavy armor, so durable that it can fly if you remove the entire front 3/4th, and so fast and maneuverable that it’s only slightly slower than a fighter and can turn as fast as one, it can ram and “fork” a enemy ship and force the enemy ship to either be a ramming plate against other enemy’s or ram it into voxels, if I’m fighting planetside I can ram your ship, flip it, then thrust into the ground and let impact destruction kill your ship. It also has armor on its turrets meaning they last many times longer in combat even without welders. It also has Fixed Gatling guns in the front with rocket launchers to inflict more damage while charging the target
