Hello Everyone,
Since we have finished building the Pioneer in my Large Ship Building Series, i thought it was prudent to show you several different Large Ship Printers to print a ship of this size out.
I hope you enjoy the video, please let me know what you guys think of the video in the comments below, and I really hope you enjoyed this video!

I use a printer wall like the first but its the other way around, the wall itself is fixed and the projector, which is mounted on the pistons, and the ship move away from it. The projection passes through the wall with only the first bit in front of the welders. As the the pistons extend each layer is welded up in turn. The pistons them selves don't need to be plumbed and I can use just plane blocks. Not to sure how that would effect your PCU and it would likely only work in space, I have only used it planet side for small grid. On the plus side the bulk is not really a problem as it can be set up in the hanger the ship is to use and you can then grind it down and move it to the next bay as needed.
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Yeah that's a good idea :) and you can definitely do it that way. It would be especially good in space :) You can do it on a planet, but i think you would need to build some type of platform with wheels that the blueprint could sit on while you move the projection back. But you would need to put a fair few wheels to hold the weight, im not sure if they have fixed the wheels clipping through armor blocks in the new Wasteland update, that's really the only issue i could see with doing it that way.

@jwadaow 3 года назад
You could use a hybrid where the projection is moved back through z and the welders traverse z and or y.

Moving the welders makes the projector much larger than it needs to be. Build a rotor printer that is fixed. Put Glass blocks infront of it, this prevents blocks being welded too soon, and then either use a wheel trolley or a piston to move the projection away from the wall. Doing it this way also means you have much more flexibility on printing different size ships.
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Its a really good idea :) Yeah the only problem I find with that style of welder is that they work really well in space but when in gravity you need to make a carriage with heaps of wheels to make it work.
@tackytrooper

@@TheGarageGamer86 Why not just make a vertical printer, with the ship oriented like a building? That would even out the gravitational forces.

@@TheGarageGamer86Simply, when the ship is done attach a merge block on a piston to the ship and rotate it up. Or, for those who like to live dangerously, a "nose down and burn" move can also be attempted.

Hello, fellow thread necromaner here, dropping some input. Glass blocks infront of welders not only prevent occassional stuck in, but they also expand the welder's "area of influence" by the surface area of glassblock.Moving the projector is much better than moving the welders and that kind of stuff can be easily utilised in gravity as long your printable can overcome the gravity. Naturally. Heck, just simply as much pistons as you need with projection block, wall of welders (Checkered or not) with windows and boom. That's the simplest, hasslefreeist setup no matter where you build the printer. If you want to be fancy, you can have the projecting pistons on additional rotors to move it away from printing area for easier release. However, wall printing tends to be bit PCU intensive.

I use gantries for strip mining ice lakes. The trick is to have the stabilizer wheels on the side far apart so you end up with a long carriage. And for welding up ships I mostly use a small drone on a "ball joint" and 2 arms.

The thought ocurs to me to use an inchworm design. Simmilar to a drilling machine but to lift a cradle with a prjector through a spinning printer blade in a vertical silo. Self reloading balistic missile silo anyone? In Low/zero gravity this could feed straight into a railgun track. The thought also occurs to construct ships in segments. Restricting these segments to what can fit into the slipway and assembilng them using tugs or cranes and merge blocks. Main body, turrets and engine nacels built up as I go.

I've used something similar to #4 as a ship "recycler" in space. The carriage would carry the object to be carried, and drive it slowly into a grinder wall. Used a lot of 1x1 suspension wheel for up/down guidance and quick positioning, and 4 regular rotor + 3x3wheel for sideways guidance and slow but steady work propulsion. Worked fine in space. Works on planets too, but i'll admit there might be better methods for large ship recycling on ground.

Carriage printer at the end. Use thrusters and gyros to control it, 100% strength, 0% friction, 0 steering and no drive. Drop your guide wheels down a block and maybe put some in to grab the bottom as well. Use suspension height to adjust the grip on the tracks and center the caddy, don't overdo it or clang will be summoned. I had a similar gantry system set up in space once, the projector was the moving part since you can move gigantic objects with little effort but the principal was the same. I would share the blueprint for it but I have long since lost the world and blueprint. The wheels gripped a LOOOOONG single rail of light armor on 4 sides. With the suspension height adjusted 1 way it released the track completely with room to spare, with it adjusted the other way till all wheels touched the track it rode just fine, if I adjusted too tight the wheels would clip and I had to grind wheels and recenter it. It worked really well in that I boosted backwards from the weld wall at a suitably slow speed, turn off the dampeners and/or thrusters and the entire ship would print without any further interaction.

A printer like that first one is server cancer. Welders tax sim speed A LOT, especially if you have like 3-4 people using 3D printers all at the same time. Same goes for drill rigs. Some asshole in our server made a 25x25 large grid drill rig, and the server sim speed would drop to about 0.17 whenever he started drilling. Worst part is, noobs like that don't realize you can space out drills and welders and accomplish the same task with half the drills/welders. Even then, such rigs are horribly inefficient. We also had some guy complaining 50K PCU wasn't enough. We asked him what the hell he was trying to build, and it was a 25K PCU ship, but this nooblet's 3D printer was about 35K PCU. Meanwhile, I welded up my 21K PCU ship by hand with 14 jump drives, 36 batteries, about 20 gyros, and lots of other stuff in about 16 hours, and still had like 29K PCU to spare, and about 15K PCU to spare after making a miner, fighter, shuttle, rover, micro repair drone, and a micro combat drone. SMH.
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
21K PCU by hand!!!! Jeepers!! I think I would go crazy, yeah mostly on sever tours and such on youtube I have seen rotary printers, they seem to be the most efficient. I have used little small grid welding ships as well but I find it hard to load the resources I need into then for different components, with exception to regular blocks and steel plates orfcoarse :)
@Gottaculat
@Gottaculat 3 года назад
@@TheGarageGamer86 Welding by hand can be advantageous. Upon the server getting wiped, I spawned in deep space and blitzed from asteroid to asteroid to get the materials needed for my ship, then immediately welded for 16 hours straight. 14 jump drives, 36 batteries, large reactor, 20 gyros, about 14 O2/H2 generators, 12 airtight hanger doors, a refinery with yield modules, 2 assemblers with 8 speed modules, 34 H2 thrusters, 10 large H2 thrusters, 5 drills, and lots more. All by hand. Not to mention a fighter, miner, transport shuttle, and a few micro drones. I was able to do 16,000 Km jumps before people were finished making their 3D printers. By the time the first war ship was printed, I'd already made my first 100M space credits. 3D printers have their place, for sure, but using an elite welder and the build planner can be surprisingly effective, too. Also, if you're interested in the abomination that would have 14 jump drives, look up "Fortune's Gambit Mk. VI" on the Steam workshop. I'm currently working on the Mk. IIX, which is bonkers, having 38 jump drives, and can do single jumps over 25,000 Km. I've probably gone mad with jump drive addiction.

Would these printers be more useful in space? Hanging blocks, on a grid being printed, that get printed seem to fall on gravity planets. In space with no gravity, any hanging block stays put. Nice video.

If u tap the key 5 times for 5x 0.5m couldn't you instead work with timers? For example 10 pistons, where after a given time a group of 5 pistons makes one step and after this the next group. You would just have to use a multiply of 5 pistons (5, 10, 15, ...).

Any suggestions for vanilla MP games with limited welder count? I'm thinking rotary printer but with a handful of welders on a couple of pistons so they can start in the centre and move their way to the outside while it spins. Vibration balance shouldn't be an issue if I counterbalance properly. I'm also considering using a sweeping arm motion with hinges to give a bit more power than the rotor, depending on how bouncy it gets.
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 2 года назад
I think the 3rd printer i have in this video would be the best, you can always reduce the amount of welders and then add additional pistons to go from left to right and just do the ship in strips. Just add a skirt to the side of the welders as well as the front and back then it wont weld the blocks in an L shape and prevent you from moving the welders over to weld another section of that layer :).

Maybe you would have more success if you built these in space. You need a static grid with welders up next to each other with no spaces in between that can change in size depending on what ship you want to build and a tug ship that moves the printed ship so it can be transported before being turned on
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
I have done space based printers before, the most efficient way would be to have a wall and pull the projection rather than the printer, but in space you don't need to worry about gravity, so its alot easier to do it that way. I tend to build a large ship in gravity and then leave the planet for space with everything I need to build a base on an asteroid 😁.

Having issues with the first printer, only the few blocks touching my platform are weldable, the rest won't weld as the wall moves, any suggestions?
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 2 года назад
Sometimes it take a long time to weld blocks because the game is struggling a bit or using a heap of CPU. It could also be that the blocks the printer is trying to weld are not supported by blocks underneath as they need to be attached to something to print. What i tend to do is weld up one layer of the front of the ship especially if the very front of the ship is not attached to the bottom. I cover it in more detail in this video here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uovF9Pvu9M8.html

You should only use the conveyor junctions if you absolutely need them; less checks for the server to make, improving server performance. as long as it is balanced, so the same on either side you should be able to fit as many as you could possibly need to complete a large ship. In space you could fit as many as you want!!

@@TheGarageGamer86 that's what I was thinking. About to try and build a ship printer in space that will be expandable to print any size ship you can imagine. Thanks for the info. Will post a link when I finish and upload to workshop. Thanks so much for the video also, it was top notch

I'm having trouble with the fact my ship seems to be too long for the amount of pistons how can I get around that without deconstructing the entire conveyer and piston system I have built
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 2 года назад
You can try to attach landing gears to the side of the welders and lock it to the ground or something, then grind back the Piston head thats attached to the printer, add the pistons you need. On the end of the new Piston put a conveyor Junction and a merge block on one side and then replace a welder with a merge block and reconnect it all. It is very tedious but it should work haha
@robgeorge9259
@robgeorge9259 2 года назад
You know what I didn't even think of a merge block! I locked the printer into place removed rhe old pistons but couldn't replace the new ones as they wouldn't attached. I ended up putting more wheels on the frame and a cockpit and driving it. Only that didn't end very well 🤣

I think I need a printer to build a printer lol I wish I was as knowledgeable about SE as most here in the comments but one day a week to play is hardly enough to practice and try all these things lol

If you want to you can just download the Build and Repair mod and it will build stuff for you, but I do find it a bit boring for my taste, but may work out for you! 😎✌️

@TheGarageGamer86 yeah I'm still trying to figure the whole game out I just make my first space fairing miner so I'm still learning I only got a few QOL mods but I'm keeping the game relatively vanilla till I become more seasoned but you, splitsie, andrewsgaming and kanajoshi have helped me immensely! Keep up the great content bud!

only good for large ships? shit we print racks of fighters at a time... way better than doing 5 small grid fighters by hand.

Haha yeah, that's actually a really good idea!!! 😁👌 I have to admit it never even crossed my mind, then again I only really play single player lol.

Can you make a large ship printer with 5 welders or less for official vanilla servers?
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 Год назад
Yeah for sure, you could setup the layer printer to do that, and have a set of pistons that move from side to side, instead of having the welders span the entire width of the ship, although I'm going to hazard a guess and say they also have a restriction on amount of pistons you can use, so might just be better to use a welding ship 🤔😁👍

I got a problema. I printed the pilgrim with a printer similar to the first one, but when it ended, the ship its no a ship, its an station, and it doenst take off. I even grind down the landing gears and now its floting but I still cannot use it haha
@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Yeah this happened to me as well, its caused by a setting called "unsupported stations" which mean that even though a grid is floating in mid air it is still a station. What you have to do is go into the K menu and then go to the Info tab, then click convert to ship. Make sure the thrusters are turned on and inertial dampeners are on or it will fall to the ground 😎👌

Will do mate :) Although because of the pistons there will be multiple sub grids so you won't be able to project the whole thing in survival, i will try to merge block the caraige to the floor though.

@TheGarageGamer86
@TheGarageGamer86 3 года назад
Sure would, they lag my single player games sometimes lol. I guess it all depends on what your server admin allows, and how good the server is, I have mainly seen rotary printers on servers but I suspect those servers are pretty high end. For the most part i use these in my single player worlds.
