With the update to the physics in Space Engineers the idea of combining multiple rotors or multiple pistons into something that actually functions reliably is no longer a pipe dream!
Today we take a look at how well, or poorly they work together and if we can turn stacks of pistons and rotors into something genuinely useful for survival or for when you have a pumpkin you need to dispose of after halloween.
If you're interested in the workshop link for the Clang-O-Lantern here it is: steamcommunity....
As always, don't forget to enjoy this awesome (if at times buggy) game!

splitsie if you balanced the weight on the rotor heads it wouldn't wobble so much. looks a lot like the G-force exhibited from rotating at high velocity.

Always love to see videos testing game mechanics, especially physics, and even more so after the physics update! It feels like there's been a lack of testing, despite the numerous videos that have come it. It just never feels like there's enough, you know? And it's so fun to see what people come up with and the oddness that may or may not result from their tests. However, most people seem to be ignoring the 'Share Inertia Tensor' option, so we haven't seen a whole lot of what that can do... I hope you'll be fiddling with it, if not here then at some point in the future. But enough talking, on to watching the video!
@Splitsie

I'm surprised more people aren't doing it, trying to break something is a lot of fun :)
@DonnaPinciot
@DonnaPinciot 6 лет назад
That thing not rotating is 100% intentional, to make vehicles not flip out when a subgrid is on it. Forces are applied at the center of mass for the whole thing now, not for each attached grid, so that thing ain't moving with a single offset thruster attached to the ground. Oh hey, you said the exact same thing once I unpaused the grid. Neat! Well, I don't think they'll be changing that any time soon, since making vehicles work right is far more important than letting you spin a rotor really fast with thrusters.
@DonnaPinciot
@DonnaPinciot 6 лет назад
Yep, the speed limit is disabled for subgrids, but if they stop being a subgrid, they immediately snap back to the speed limit. You're probably about to say the same thing once I unpause again, huh?
@DonnaPinciot
@DonnaPinciot 6 лет назад
Perhaps the rotors are working more easily with equal and opposite force, since if you rotate the head, you're going to push the body in the opposite direction at the same speed, so there probably are those effectively not rotating much, if at all, since they are mobile.
@DonnaPinciot
@DonnaPinciot 6 лет назад
Oh dear, I don't think breaking the top speed will work if you're not connected to the grid. Best-case, you'll be able to break it only for the duration of it pushing you, but you'll be fighting it the whole way. Worst-case, you clip through and/or destroy one or both grids due to the immovable object thing. Oh, you didn't seem to be quite trying to do that? You mentioned it, but didn't get anywhere near it.

The rotor with a thruster was saying that the angular velocity is too high. That's why it didn't move.

The rotor with the thruster will work if you set the torque to 0
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
The torque should only matter when the rotor is on, once you turn it off it uses the breaking torque to determine the force needed to move the rotor part. Not sure if something changes in the rotor if I turn it on with regard to dealing with the thruster though. The way I'd set it up had worked before the physics update as I used it at the end of my rotor tutorial which is why I'd tested it that way, but even if it doesn't work anymore I hope there's some way we can use thrusters to turn the rotor, I'll have to try what you suggested and see if for some strange reason having the rotor on changes it's behaviour with the thruster

Fantastic to see rotors and pistons working so well. My current survival game has a much more mundane use. Connecting a space only ship that has forward and rear facing hydrogen thrusters that I landed on a planet with 12 parachutes and a lot of thrust to a crashed ship with a lot of resources. Nice and stable connector set up that would likely have been a disaster before lol. Your recent videos on the update have hugely useful and appreciated, cheers fella.

The piston thing has always been there. It only makes sense that if you've got three pistons extending at the same speed, the end is going to move at three times the individual extension speed. I found this out a long time ago, building a large drill rig, if you're extending all the pistons simultaneously, their individual maximum speed has to be the cumulative max divided by the number of pistons. The thruster thing isn't going to work in vanilla, because all thrust is calculated through the center of mass. Digi made a Realistic Thruster mod that gives offset forces for thrusters.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
The only trouble with using the stacked pistons before was that I'd often end up with some very bizarre behaviour followed by explosions :P The thruster thing used to work exactly as I set it up, the reason I wanted to test it is that as you say, since the update it puts thrust through the center of mass. It turns out though that it still works but only under the very specific conditions of having the rotor still on but with low or 0 torque - that to me seems like there's a bug or two in that behaviour...
@ShadowMage3D
@ShadowMage3D 6 лет назад
I seem to recall something about it on the stream with W4stedspace and Wedge just after the update. It might be the shared center of mass, which means that it's actually trying to move your platform instead of just the arm
@Zephrame
@Zephrame 6 лет назад
For the Rotor Thruster: The rotor definitely needs to be 'on', because whenever a block with a movement function is 'off', it is essentially locked. You'll also have to drop its torque to zero
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
Actually there are two methods for a freely spinning rotor, sadly only one of them seems to work for the thrusters - which I've only learned from comments since this video was released. You can either have the rotor on with torque at 0 or you can have the rotor off and braking torque at 0. To have the thrusters work apparently you need to have the rotor on for some odd reason... I can't understand why there would be a functional difference between the two setups which is why I hadn't even thought to try the other at the time :P Oops!
@samuels1123
@samuels1123 Год назад
@@Splitsie I believe the status of the rotor defines some property of the attached subgrid, when the rotor is on, the subgrid is 'on', more accurate force calculations are used

i think i finally figured out how to use thrusters to spin an arm on a rotor. you have to isolate the arm as its own grid. i built the setup with a rotor, a few blocks with a thruster at the end like you have in the video. i removed the thruster and on the push side of the arm, added another rotor (which i locked) and a light block with the thruster on top of the light block pointing at the arm. Turn off the (Hinge) rotor and turn on your thruster
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 лет назад
Nice, that makes sense, it's strange having to work around Space Engineers' way of pushing all the thrust through the centre of mass
@DerIsy

The rotor behavior with intertia tensor spinning slowly is the exact same problem I had with my solar script. I noticed, that, the more shared subgrids you have, the weaker the very first rotor gets, up to a point, where it is barely able to move the grids above it - even with max torque. That's why I only enable the inertia tensor on the horizontal rotors by default. The angular velocity experiment however should work, if you turn the rotor on. The braking torque actually gets applied when the rotor is turned off (you can see that when hovering over the braking torque slider as a tooltip). In my solar script I set torque and braking torque to 0 but leave rotor on, if a U-shape contraption is used..
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
I had the rotor off so it should have been using the braking torque. I don't quite understand why it works when you turn the rotor on and have no torque but not with the rotor off but no braking torque. In my head those two situations should be identical. Am I missing something?

You might want to try the rotor with thruster on an arm extension with the rotor on a landing gear. The thruster maybe trying to spin the whole station that the rotor is attached to and not just the rotor head or rotor.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
Apparently it'll work with an even simpler fix - a few people have told and showed me that the thruster will work if the rotor is on with torque at 0, even though in my head that's the same as having it off with braking torque at 0. Oh well, just a little SE quirk :P
@ElimGWolfwoodFTW

I was suprised at the thruster not driving the rotor! Mine worked just fine. Differences were that my rotor was on a piston, and the thruster was assisting a rotor that already wanted to rotate on it's own.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
It turns out there's a bug with it where it'll only work if the rotor is on and has 0 torque, I don't know why I didn't test it that way at the time :P
@Darilon12
@Darilon12 3 года назад
The problem with using thrusters to rotate is that SE seperates linear and rotational movement. As thrusters push the grid straight it won't result in rotational movement. SE also really hates any rotation not centered around the center of mass as that center of mass does three things at once. 1. It moves 'linearly'. 2. It changes the direction of that movement constantly to make that movement appear circular. 3. It rotates It's a bit like NESCAR. Going around in circles looks easy, but is actually really hard.
@alexblock6734
@alexblock6734 6 лет назад
I believe you problem is that you didn't turn down the movement Torque on the rotor to zero, if you turned this down in the past. The items would flop around. Also The Themis auto leveling script "one of the best scripts in the game" I believe still works and this works entirely on thrust applying a off centered force. Hopefully this comment isn't redundant
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
The rotors are oddly bugged, the behaviour with rotor off and braking torque at 0 should be the same as rotor on and torque at 0, and that's how it was before the patch. Both of those setups would spin freely and rotate with a thruster. Since the patch it only works with the rotor on and torque at 0 for some strange reason, annoyingly I didn't think to try both at the time :P
@MadSpectro7

I have managed to have a rotor (off) with a grav drive attached to one end, close to the rotor and a cabin with a reactor and a flight seat at the other end (far from the rotor) to reach abou 1000m/s without speed mods. I think for the thruster thing to work you need a flight seat on the grid that you wish to propel and also make sure that it is not set as "station". The funniest part was when I detached the rotor - the grid kept spinning violently, but not perfectly circular - it spun out of control while circling around the general area that the rotor was in. Also it slowed down to 100m/s
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
I tried it with the flight seat, but edited that part out since at the time it didn't work either :/ It seems like for thrusters to spin a rotor, the rotor needs to be on, if it's off it just behaves weirdly... I'm glad things work as they should with a grav drive based rotation :)

Same as before the update, thrusters don't apply torque to grids and thus will not rotate your rotor. The thruster tries to move the sub-grid and the rotor stops that.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 лет назад
I'd had it working prior to the update, if you have a look at my rotors tutorial you can see it, though it seems these days the only way to do it is to ensure that the subgrid is heavily lopsided so that the force going through the middle of the subgrid isn't directly over the rotor :)

The thruster arm thing is a part of a limiter in the physics engine that makes thruster position irrelevant there is a mod that enables this (I think this is what is happening based on what I know)
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
Oddly that doesn't seem to be the problem, if I'd thought to turn on the thruster and make it have 0 torque (which should behave the same as what I did) the rotor will spin with the thruster... very odd and almost certainly a bug. But what you mentioned is what I thought at the time, that it was applying the thrust to the center of mass for the entire shared grid thus not spinning the rotor, but oh well at least the rotor stack works :)
@yui4342
@yui4342 5 лет назад
@Splitsie you need to set the upper limit to Unlimited to make it free spin
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 лет назад
Only if it's running up against the angle limit, which those ones weren't. In my survival series I've since worked out that you need to have the center of mass far enough away from the rotor to allow for thrusters to create rotational force, however they are not very good at it any more so there are far better options for high speed launching which physics blocks :)

Have you tried killing off the rotor's torque on the thruster model? That might have something to do with the lack of motion; this happens with motors in real life; the higher the torque the motor has, the more difficult it is for an outside force to overcome the motor's inertia.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
SE also allows you to have free spinning rotors with the rotor off and braking torque at 0 but it does something buggy when you attach a thruster to it. Oddly even though that should work, what you've suggested does work. Setting the torque to 0 and leaving it on apparently everything works exactly as it used to... I can't really explain it :P

I worked it out later, It was due to where the centre of mass is, it needs to be further away from the pivot of the rotor for the thruster to be able to push the arm
@superhelicase
@superhelicase 6 лет назад
Too lazy to read through all the comments to see if this has been mentioned, but on your rotor launching system, add a counterweight to the other side of the arm until the center of mass is over the rotor stack. That should greatly reduce the wobble, and probably get even more speed.
@Splitsie

I was definitely silly not to have done that, and as you suspected several other people had pointed out that little bit of info - will be certain to remember it for the next flinging machine I build :)

if noone has said this before if you turn down the torque it should allow the thruster to move the rotor i found this out when trying to connect two rotor's together to spin them at the same time for looks of building my mining rig
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
It turned out there was a weird behaviour at the time I made this, where if the rotor was off there was no way to move it with thrusters, but if you turn it on and turn the torque down it'll be able to move. The rotors should have been able to freely move when off with no braking torque but just wouldn't :(

Trebuchets? Inkvine catapults? Also interesting with the rotors, b/c I remember testing something like that once years ago and found that second rotor didn't actually help. The first rotor would get slowed down by the second one's counter torquing base. Edit: What if you use a "warhead" with an overridden thruster on it? Sort of like a rocket assisted artillery shell, eh? Also, I think you'd probably be better just mounting your flinger vertically and that way you might get a bit more range, but you definitely could adjust the release point to change the impact point. :) Oh, and another thing, instead of using a merge block, why not use a landing gear? Then you don't have to sacrifice the merge block on the "warhead" end. Would obviously be more complicated, but I still think it'd be doable.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
I'd experienced the same thing with rotors before the update, it's why I really wanted to try it again. I'm so glad it works now :) I used the merge block as it makes building and disconnecting with the projector easier, using grinders or other such devices to disconnect the warhead is always much more fiddly. I totally agree with you on setting it up vertically though, that would likely add a lot to the range

Hey Splitsie, i have a question for you, i've followed one of your tutorials about solar panels rotating to the sun. I've created a multiplayer survival server so the rotation gives allot of profit with energie but it makes the server lag. Do you have any experience in what can cause these problems or how to solve them? Grids with unsafe values - Rotors. Please keep beeing this amazingly good with your content yet again amazing video!
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
Sadly scripts and moving grids have a strong tendency to make server performance drop significantly and the same is true in single player if you have a lot of them running. If you stick to scripts that have updated to not require timer blocks there might be a small performance gain but ultimately there's not much you can do other than stopping the scripts :( And thanks :)

i think you should know that in this game the thrust of a thruster/the force of an impact is always applied to the center of mass of the grid: this means that the rotor and and the thruster are pushing against each other (according to the physics engine). Note that this rule only applies on a single grid. In other words: you can make that thing spin by thruster if you make the arm a piston. (in theory) havent played the game in at least a year tho.

can you try to undo the Torque box to see if the overided thruster will turn. and also if you ad more blocks to you rotating speed breaker you will go faster
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
From what a few people posted it seems as though there are some bugs with the way the rotors are interpreting force. If the rotor is on and has 0 torque it behaves differently to if it's off and has 0 braking torque even though both should behave identically and freely spin. That's why I hadn't tried it at the time :( To get the rotor to spin with the thruster apparently you just turn the rotor on and have torque at 0...

One thing I haven't seen anyone test is the difference between ramming a piston into a block on the same grid, a sub-grid and a separate grid. I have seen the big nothing that now happens if you ram a piston into the same grid and I suspect the same thing happens on subgrids, but what about a different grid? Can we still get some destruction?

Recently I worked out part of the problem with the rotor, due to force from thrusters being applied to the center of a grid, you need to have the arm on the rotor as lopsided as possible to get the thruster to push it around, otherwise it's just pushing through the head of the rotor. It is however, somewhat inconsistent in its behaviour :(

In the past iv built large gravity artillery peaces. But they really only worked on the moon. Cause artificial gravity doesn't work in planet gravity, and in space it only fires the projectile in a strait line. But on the moon, you can adjust the ark and actually perform long range artillery strikes. Furthest (somewhat accurate) shot of thus far made with it was at 10km. with about .3 of a km of spread. But with a group of guns firing at the same time, you could really lay down some fire power. But the guns are kinda hard to use and takes a single person At least 2min to reload, but with a crew of 3 or 5 you could easily do 20-30 second reloads. Its still in the development phase but if I finish it. Id love to show you it. iv also produced many gravity cannons for space warfare that can do immense amounts of damage. As well as many missiles.

ive seen velocities in excess of 400 m/s if you take a rotor, put a looooooooooooong arm on it, put a stack of pistons on that, extend the pistons, and measure from the flying tip. unfortunately, as soon as the tip is not moving around a rotor, it instantly slows to max speed.

I thought the thrusters in Space Engineers were incapable of applying torque. It was one of my major gripes with the building system when I last played. You could make as rediculously lopsided arrangement of thrusters you wanted, and it would still fly straight.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 6 лет назад
Only on your main grid, with the change in the physics in the big physics update, sometimes sub grids can apply torque through thrusters and sometimes they can't, though it seems inconsistent as to when that happens. If I'd thought to turn on the rotor and turn its torque to 0 then it would have worked :P

You can spin things with gyros on override but due to the application of force being at the center of mass, the only way I've been able to get things to spin with thrusters when on the end of rotors is to have the piece on top very lopsided, which still ends up slower than just turning the rotor on :(

I'm building a rather primitive but I guess decent large ship because it is my first ever large ship project in the game and I'm trying to build a hangar bay and I'm wondering if I should just use a bunch of pistons to push the blast door up and have a ship dock that way or use rotors to open it about 90 degrees straight up
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 5 лет назад
For hangar doors on ships I'd try to stick to airtight hangar doors, particularly if you're planning on having the ship enter the gravity well of a planet. The reason for this is that subgrids and the inertial dampeners don't play very nicely with one another. The mass of whatever is on the other end of the rotor or piston will sometimes not be included in the weight calculations for the thrusters to resist so the ship will end up slowly (or sometimes not so slowly) sinking :(

I know i'm quite a bit behind as far as timing. I just started playing this again after 3 years of not. didn't realize that pistons were so volatile. I was able to rig up 2 stacks of 10 consecutive pistons in order to create a mobile drilling rig about a week ago with only the usual shake from inertia of the vehicle. I just learned about merging blocks when I created it and only merged the other sets of pistons i used that connected to the 'platform'. i disassembled what i called the drill pistons yesterday and when I started to re-build them today, i got a VERY violent reaction at the 4th piston in the link... No amount of merging was helping. I'm not sure why they worked the other day and suddenly today they started whipping and exploding.... i have been trying to find a way to combat this, but haven't been able to find anything. Do you know if there was ever a solution to my current problem?

Before the physics patch the behaviour of rotors was that having a rotor on with torque set to 0 was the same as having a rotor off and having braking torque at 0. When rotors are off the braking torque is meant to be applied, but for some reason that is no longer the case and I stupidly didn't think to try it with the rotor on at the time I recorded :P
