Great way to drill a pilot hole. I have a mining arm design that requires you to make a pilot hole first. I often use small warheads to make the pilot hole, but i might try this.
Yeah when I was developing hyper efficient mining vessels, I used a cross/swastika style head due to it being effective when you're restricted on how many drills you can use.
This is a cool setup. So far the most compact and seeming resource-efficient setup I have seen yet. The other examples people have put up are huge and often use a lot for drills that are very resource expensive. I much prefer the 6 drill head. It seems to work alright. I am highly considering adding pistons instead of conveyers to the arms with single drills so they can be expanded when it has reached an or vein and remove more of it.
I'm new to this game and was able to replicate Wizard's miner design except for the drill part. Honestly, I really have a hard time to replicate this. - There are lot of adjustments needed on the piston to handle the rotors attachment/detachment. - Sensor is the key. Hahaha. I made some improvements just to make sure it will stop when the drill is on the right position or there are no more components. - This is good for vanilla version. Kudos to Wizard and Thank you LSG for sharing this.

Very awesome design, I only see one problem, that landing gear, near the drill, if you wanna drive the rover, it’ll hit the ground all the time, unless you drive on a flat surface
The dirty secret is that the best way of mining is always a flying machine. All the effort to automatically crawl or replicate or extend, is mooted by a simple thruster.
Because you fill your head with more memes and such things than useful engineering stuff i would guess. I am from germany and i only recognized this as somewhat similar after i started reading the comments. :P Since i gave you something to compare, now you can get to a conclusion about yourself. :D
@@ArgelTal_ you know those bucket mining things? the big ones that are used in quarrys? its like that, but since you cant have diagonal drills it loos like that.
deatth14 one sensor at the top, detects subgrid. I put a large block off the main grid that the sensor will detect when the piston is at it’s max length
@@deatth14 I'll likely e posting blueprints for my recreation on the workshop soon. How I set up sensors is as follows. Place two sensor in the upward facing piston. Set the first so that it detects sub-grids only, adjust the ranges so that it triggers when the piston is at minimum extent, this triggers a timer placed in the first slot that attaches both rotors and triggers the extension timers. Set the second timer the same way but adjust the range so that its just short of detecting at full extension, then use the second slot that triggers another timer when not detected, this runs a timer that again attaches both rotors, but this time runs the retract timers. One change I made from what is shown in the video is that rather than the reset turning all sequence timers on, i reversed it so all timers are off as a safety. If you simply reset and hit the start button it will do nothing, you would have to hit a mode button to turn on the timers for the desired function first.
I have to say I like the idea. It is well engineered. However my experience tells me that deposits are almost always flat! Yaix. Therefore this is good but very slow way to get access shaft done. But it could drill in RMB mode to speed up and just don't get gazillions of stone. Than another horizontal drill is supposed to start scraping just on the deposit level. However that foldable L drill will be a bit more complicated. And way faster is airborn drill rig, or drone to make shaft in RMB mode, then scrape what's inside deposit layer and fly to base.
Perhaps I'm naive with my mere ~620 hours in SE but why do I never see other people put their timer blocks on the small grid head of a rotor? In my experience I feel like there's never a reason to use up all that large grid space on a large grid timer block array other than clang-prevention reasons or perhaps servers don't like the extra subgridding maybe. I've been using small grid timer blocks to control everything large grid and small grid and it works fine. I also like doing it because it's an excuse to have a kind of neato central computer room on my vessel or base. Each system or group of similar systems gets a large grid rotor with a small head with all the relevant timer blocks. Even on a highly complicated system they don't take up more than a single large block space. You can fit 125 small grid timer blocks in the space of one large one, if you needed that many for whatever reason. I'm genuinely curious what peoples' constructive thoughts are on the idea and I can't be the only person who does this I'm sure. I've also never made a drill system quite this cool and intricate yet I must say.
Personally I just use programmable blocks to manage all of my systems in 1 block so I dont really have much experience messing with that sort of thing but my guess would be that installing a small grid "computer" in your ship mid print adds complexity to manufacturing and most people would prefer to just print their ships off. In this case though it was never gonna be printed so I have no idea, would've been a lot more compact.

I developed a mining module concept up to 3km deep only with small blocks in a space of 5X5 large blocks and only 1 block wide, (and without propellants) what do you say about that

@@ApathyGates After a careful rethink I can agree with you two on this, I was thinking about two separate grids, sorry. (I guess it shows how long I haven't played)
1: item transfer speed. 2: it needs to build itself. 3: if it goes too fast, the lowering mechanism could break. 4: there is plenty of resources being mined anyway. 5: production could go too slow and the drill no longer gets built and could possible fall off or break.
@Aliver87 the whole premise of the drill is you set it up, then have the projector print the extension portion, why would it not work, of you just removed 1 or 2 drills for the 5 drill limit?
lol id agree, but most servers disable scripts because they can't control which ones are allowed so you'd end up with some server breaking script. KEEN FOR THE LOVE OF CLANG, ADD WHITELIST/BLACKLIST SCRIPT OPTIONS!!
