Space-flowing apartment: walk-thru shower & fridge-in-drawer

John MacPeek has fond memories of living out of a suitcase when he first moved to Europe over 2 decades ago. "There's a real advantage to having everything you own that you can carry on your back at one point". So when he was looking to buy an apartment in Barcelona, he was ready to live in something compact where everything he owned was accounted for.
When he first saw his new home, its size didn't bother him (about 25 square meters or 270 square feet) as much as its condition. It was an old storage room for the building's water tanks and it looked more like a storage room than anything habitable.
MacPeek enlisted the help of architect Lola Domenech who insisted she'd take on the project if she could open up the apartment to the sea. He bought the "over-sized closet" and Domenech began plans to take down the main wall and replace it with a 6 meter long (20 foot long) folding glass door that allows in light and air to provide passive solar heating and cooling (the shutters can close it off completely in summer to prevent overheating).
She also implemented space-saving ideas like a walk-through shower, a bedroom that becomes a lounge and a refrigerator in a drawer.

When they roll up the futon they try to act like it's such a brilliant seat, that it's so comfortable. Nobody would be able to sit like that for any period yet they do that usual high brow "ohhh this is interesting and unique!" With different cushions or further thinking on how to transform that area you could actually make it comfortable

With out the pee pee stain it would be better.
@virginiamoss7045

Why sit on the hard wood? Just sit on the mattress. The whole bed thing is a failure; for a middle of the night pee you have to get up on one side, go all the way around, down steps to the bathroom or get up (down) on the high side and then try to climb back up into the bed or take the steps all around. Just put a futon there.

Two design flaws foe me on this entire design. 1. I would have reversed the shower and toilet sink areas. 2. So many missed opportunities with the bed/living area to do something more functional. Rolling up the mattress to expose wooden slats to sit on down on the floor with a stained mattress probably due to sweat and moisture is not definitely not inviting.
@DavidSpence-davidgadol

Excellent, I agree! To add, the fridge /freezer set-up would have worked perfectly if it were either inset in the space under the living room platform or on-top, from the living room in an L-shape, (creating more counter space in the living room and, better functionality with the same fridge /freezer set-up facing the kitchen!

I must be laundry obsessed because the thing I notice in over half of these tiny dwellings is there is no washer/dryer unit. Do they use a laundromat and lug clothes up and down the stairs with their groceries? I love the clever use of space and design, especially of those windows and shutters.

What a missed opportunity with that bed/sofa! It easily could have been designed with a hinge in the center to flip up and make a true sofa unit so you don't have to fold up the mattress each time you want to use it as a sofa. Put the angle iron on another set of angle iron brackets, hinge the angle iron and then have some bolt type locks that slide into hole fittings in the wall. Nice apt though.

nice layout. blowing out the wall for the light was a great move. shutters together with the sliding window lets you modulate light. the accommodations due to the downstairs neighbor really accentuate the transition to the living space -- also acting as space separation without really separating everything.

Too choppy for me. The fact that you can't climb into bed from either side. You have to awkwardly reach across a counter to access the fridge. I did like the pop of red. I liked the idea of the folding, louvered doors, but they "were" too noisy. The shower idea was good, but I still would have added about a foot. I think if you have to do extra bending and reaching for things you access often it should be redesigned.

It's a former attic. You cannot "add" it back to another apartment. As he said, It's on top of a "cathedral ceiling" apartment. That means the apartment below has very tall rooms with pitched ceiling, which is what caused the floor of the attic to be stepped, not flat. As a bachelor apartment, it's pretty ok. I just hate the way he says "frigerator" and the fact most of the things squeek. Be a man, get some WD40 and some olive oil (because Spain, duh) and fix it!

While I enjoy viewing these type of videos, what I notice most is the cost. Renovation requires a lot of money and architects are not cheap. I guess what annoys me is how much money is being thrown about for these folks to convert an usable/unusable space into something they see as functional. Why not just buy a small home/apartment that does not require so much work/cost. I also agree with the person who said that rich folks go in and buy these places only to convert them, when a person of lesser means could have also bought them without conversions. If these rich architect types keep buying up these type of properties, where will others go to buy?
@johnbuenaventura1

It depends where you live. In some places you don't really have the ability to buy a smaller home or the apartments are really expensive. There is also property taxes that you have to pay every year.
@ShankaraOm

Well i don't think that place was actually ready for people to buy it. It was a place that needed serious remodelations. So i actually think that is easier for who don't have so much money to buy a ready to live home. Unless they work in construction... Also old houses exist a lot and if nobody get them they often get demolished or just fall apart... With that said i really think is great idea for architects and designers to take this issue in their own hands and make the space "liveble" again, mantaining the exterior original vibe.

You've just described what is happening in many parts of the world. We in the US call it "gentrification" as cities get so crowded that the older/cheaper areas get taken over by the wealthier, pushing out the regular and lower classes, sometimes to the street. It's gotten to be a critical problem, mostly because many people don't have a living wage so that corporations can make bigger profits. It's the obscene wealth gap causing homelessness.

I like most of it. 👏 I would’ve chosen a wet room type shower space, the function and layout would drive me. Plus let’s be real that curtain is not keeping things 100% dry anyway. The kitchen is awkward and wouldn’t work for a shorter person like myself. I would’ve chosen to configure the bedroom space in that lower section with living area on upper level.

Of course it's not a flat for a large family, but that's not the point they're trying to make. They've created something great and practical, from a space which beforehand was underwhelming. Give them credit and show some respect please.

I hate to be petty but....please use some wd40 on those squeaky folding doors !! that makes me crazy. I do LOVE IT otherwise !!

WD-40 wears out fast. You often have to apply it daily. It would be better to put White Lithium Grease on. You have to move the hinges back and forth to work the grease in by capillary action but it'll last for years and the more you use it, the more it lubricates. Only thing is that you wind up storing your little tube of grease for years before it's needed again if ever. Then again WD-40 cans wind up without their little red straws awfully fast so you keep buying more cans.

My favorite thing during these videos is when they act like an inconvenience in the building process was actually an architectural or artistic choice.

Really nice adaptation of a small space. The decision to knock out that wall was the game changer that made the whole thing work. Nicely done. Wish they could have explored and talked about the patio outside more, though...

As a fire Fighter, that hallway is not conducive for a rescue. If you have a medical, good luck getting out. 🤨

Indeed, the biggest con is the staircase, I imagine even getting groceries up there is a pain in the ass.

kirksfilms That actually was my first thought and throughout the whole video I could not stop thinking about that. That medieval stairway would be an absolute death trap in case of a fire. A big nope on that space even before I saw that sad, falling down room at the top.

And if you’re into showering in front of the whole city, got you ‘covered’. Still great inventive use of space.

wouldn't want to be the person who sleeps on the far side of the bed and accidentally falls out, but otherwise pretty cool design, I like that it has a full size cooker.

You could easily put in a bed guard rail. They often go under the mattress and strap to the base.

Great video. I agree that as Americans we have become a Society of clutter. The mind set of "having stuff" has in fact taken over many of our lives, often for the worst. This gentleman explains this is such a great way and also lives it. Thanks for sharing..

How in the world did they get the furniture and appliances up those stairs?
@johnwang9914
@johnwang9914 5 лет назад
We used a crane to move equipment in and out of a commercial office building in the UK. I would suspect lifting everything through windows and balconies either through cranes, ropes and pillows would be common throughout Europe. A running gag in one of Douglas Adams books was a sofa that got stuck on the landing in a stairway, needless to say it was based on an actual sofa becoming stuck in a UK University although that was because the stairway was renovated.
