@@SpinningSquareWaves how can you do it on the Genesis? I need to do a Castlevania Dracula X OST remix on it but I can't find or make any instrument similar to the Filtered Square Lead from Divine Bloodlines, for example.
Nice song. So simple yet so much going on. Can I please get the project file?🥺🥺 I'm so interested in how you did the echo effects for the FM channels...
I have, but I haven't really had an opportunity to do so. I've tried to make my own games on many occasions, but I haven't been able to fully finish any yet.
SSG-EG is a somewhat obscure setting found in some of Yamaha's FM chips, such as the YM2412 found in the Sega Genesis. tldr; it's a special setting that can allow for unique distortions that are otherwise impossible for the Genesis to create. Here's a video clip that describes it in length ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nlDfVrC9IHA.html ), but since it's kind of long, I'll briefly describe it here. Essentially, SSG-EG takes the volume envelope, which is changes the volume of a sound over time, and then it repeats this envelope. If the envelope was a simple decay, for example, then that decay would repeat, restarting every time the volume reaches zero. Usually, this repetition is used with a low repetition rates for an echo effect and with high repetition rate for distortion. More recently, it's even been used for speech synthesis! Here's a song that does all three: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3sh8ZBVWZpE.html In this case, I've actually tuned the repetition of the envelope to match the note being played, so it has more of an effect similar to chorusing. This can be seen on the second and third channel of this song, where it creates an effect similar to PWM.
@@nathandaniels4823 Yes, actually! - Jewel Mater uses it for an echo in it's intro theme: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LWIwamnvTK0.html - Shining in the Dark uses it for the same purpose, albeit extremely briefly in this song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bkFxr9jfZuI.html - Mega Race uses it for some of its distorted guitars, most notably in Maeva, but in other songs also: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8GUjBXmyFjU.html There are probably others I missed, but Mega Race is probably the one that uses SSG-EG the most. It was actually that OST that inspired me to learn how to use SSG-EG in the first place. Similar techniques were also used for other soundchips, namely the YM2608 and the AY-3-8910, but with those, it functions a bit differently. Edit: formating
