A lot of critics gave this movie a bad review saying it was unrealistic or whatever. They don't get it. This was a feel good, rompin Space adventure that had action, comedy, romance, drama. It was brilliant and it made us laugh and cry, and despite the criticisms I think the science was above average for this kind of film. It's not a fricken documentary. It's a work of art. Mission Accomplished. Databyter

@@920WASHBURN Not always. but usually I ignore the critics, and go for the peoples choice. But this one has fallen as low as 6 on the IMDB ratings, it is rising as the years go by and people appreciate it more and more. But it is still less than 7. Originally there was a bizarre criticism of the "science" used in the film and it was ridiculed and was given low ratings. I never understood it and I have defended the film from Day 1. Show me any space film and I'll show you artistic license. I have no idea how a film that was this fun to watch, and struck a home run on entertainment was not at the very least between 7 and 8. And this IS a Peoples audience score. Just a bizarre thing that so many people just hated this film. I loved it from my first viewing to my last, and probably have watched it once every year or two since it came out. I believe I personally gave it an 8. Bisscute is correct, it IS partially a comedy. It is also a summer action blockbuster, also a romance, also had many dramatic moments. How can you judge this as a 6 on your scale of "scientific accuracy"? And I don't know where this viral criticism came from anyway, because Yeah, we don't have secret shuttles most likely, but we COULD. I mean the science wasn't that bad. I am a SCIENCE guy, and I was never bothered watching it. Other than the fact that I doubt we would really be able to do what they did, I thought the science was well done.

At some point in the last year we successfully launched a rocket into a nearby asteroid to see if we could divert its path. I saw it happen live here on RU-vid. Within a few days later they announced that the rocket did send the asteroid off course. So it sort of made this movie plausible. I remember hearing references to this movie a lot when watching the launch of the rocket.

Armaggedon was a huge crowd pleaser that critics didn't think much of. For something completely different in a space movie, watch 2001: A Space Odyssey. Armaggedon makes you laugh and cry, while 2001 bends your mind. Stanley Kubrick made what was for the mid 1960's, an incredible vision of evolution and our future in space, that holds up well today...

On a drilling rig, a rough neck is a floor hand or a pump hand. They usually work the tongs, which is the dirtiest jobs on the rig. The jobs are, The Driller: controls the brake and throttle and rpm of the drill bit, the derrick hand climbs the derrick and racks the pipe, and mixes the mud when not in the derrick, the floor hands “rough necks”, work the tongs, do all the hard labor, everyone works hard, in rough conditions, and they all started as rough necks and worked to the better positions. I haven’t work on rigs in 8 years.

This is one of my favorite space sci-fi films. The emotions & feelings such as the tension, unease, hope, love, sacrifice etc were well played out by the actors. But of course on the realistic/accurate aspect, it doesn't come out the best. This was meant to be an entertaining space save the world film. The song "I don't wanna miss a thing" is a fcking beautiful song, still one of my favorites till this day. Biss, another space movie that u should react to is Deep Impact, also released in 1998. It's got a very similar plot (asteroid hitting earth causing global extinction). Deep Impact also focuses on more characters in multiple perspectives. Just FYI Biss, DEFCON stands for Defense Readiness Condition, it is a term used by the US government to determine and set the state of readiness and preparedness of its military according to existing threats or possible existing threats (war, terrorist attack etc). There are 5 levels, DEFCON 5 (lowest state of readiness) to DEFCON 1 (highest state of readiness, major threat occurring). The lowest DEFCON level ever activated was level 2 (during 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and the 1991 Gulf War).

I was in the U.S. Air Force so many things they showed here are very familiar to me from the training. After they landed and six jets flew overheard, but one veered off from the other five? That is how the Air Force pays tribute to those they lost after a successful mission. It was originally called the 'Missing Man Formation', which I recently heard they would rename it to the 'Missing Warrior Formation', since we now have woman that fly in combat along side the men.

My favorite movie of all time next to The Departed. I've seen it over 30 times and cry every time and cried during your review of it lol

There is no way to kill all life in the universe. The universe has all the building blocks of life. There is almost certainly life on other planets in the cosmos who may or may not resemble us. One thing is for sure, the cosmos is older than the planet we live on. In fact, it is infinitely older.

DEFCON is short for "defense readiness condition", it determines how various military assets are deployed and used (such as the number of fighter jets kept fueled, on standby, and with what ordinance). It ranges from 5, peacetime/lowest readiness, to 1, nuclear war is either about to happen or is currently in progress (everyone is having a really bad day). "Defqon.1" is a music festival held in the Netherlands and is not what is mentioned in this movie. DEF CON is a hacker convention held in Las Vegas, this is also not what's mentioned in this movie. Defconn is a Korean rapper, also not mentioned here. Deafcon would be an awesome name for a convention of deaf people, but seems to be the name of a Belgian hard rock band instead.

Because of early Astronauts showing extreme distress and outbursts etc, they started doing even more mental stress tests to make sure astronauts don’t have breakdowns while out in space. If you watch the tests earlier on them, it showed the character that kinda lost his marbles was not fit mentally for the stress of being in space etc. they pushed him through because of the emergency.

Hey Biss! So, there have been a number of times where Hollywood put out two movies about the same thing at the same time. This is one of those times - while this was the big Hollywood Summer Movie one, there was also "Deep Impact", a more subdued look at what might happen on Earth during such a time. Check it out! Great job. 🤘😎👍

The Aerosmith song you were singing along with @ 24:26 is being sung by Ben Affleck's girlfriend (in this movie Liv Tyler) real life father Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith.

DEFCON is a U.S. Military term for Defense Readiness Condition. 1 is for Imminent Nuclear War or has already begun, 2 is next level that is war is close but is the next that sometime bad is about to happen, 3 Increase in force readiness about normal level, 4 Increased Intelligence readiness and Increase security measures, 5 lowest state of readiness closest to peace. DEFCON is connect to NORAD- North American Aerospace Defense Command they detect anything in the air and space, like the asteroids because they thought they were under attack.

Probably someone else said it already but DEFCON means "Defense Condition" which is a way the NATO measures how bad stuff is. DEFCON 5 means everything's fine. DEFCON 1 means that we are ready to launch nukes to Russia :3

just an FYI... we dont have 'chambers with zero gravity'. the way we reproduce "zero gravity" is by a big plane flying up and down. or in a pool, which technically still isn't zero grav. that chamber was a vacuum chamber. not zero gravity. totally different.
