If it's true that both NASA and the DOD can override the FAA then my best guess is that last minute approval will be coming from the FAA. After all, a reluctantly issued licence is better than being overruled by another agency. If that happens then questions will start being asked as to whether the FAA is relevant for space launches and they might actually lose funding.

Isn't it obvious why the separation burn is 8 seconds instead of the previous 4 seconds? SpaceX is trying to change the heavy ejectable single-use protection ring (what was it called?) to a lighter permanent multiple-use ring. The future much lighter version probably can't handle as big forces during the separation, and that's why it will change to a longer duration, but less intense burn.

My initial theory was that either 1. SpaceX decided that launching without the FAA license was a risk/cost SpaceX is willing to take, or 2. loudly preparing everything for launch and then cancelling at the last second due to lack of a launch license is a way to increase pressure on the FAA. Now that "inside sources" are saying that the license might actually be forthcoming, I'm less sure. Fingers crossed that the FAA really does come through.

My guess (uneducated) is NASA will issue the license (if not the FAA). This is a mission critical component of the Artemis program and at the pace of FAA approvals it’ll take too long. If NASA feels like there is even a possibility of political influence on these approvals (I’m not saying there is) then I can see them wanting to step in to correct that. It would also help legitimize Starship and remove the “billionaires just want to play in space” narrative that some people still erroneously believe.

I wonder about the Ship reentry precision. I mean, eventually they also want to catch ships, so they must be able to reenter and land with some precision. My point is I'd LOVE to see a ground view of the final descent and flip/landing. Maybe they could place a buoy or something within sight of the target.

Also following another significant mission of the next 6 years - the Europa Clipper probe. They weren't able to go anywhere probably because of the landfall of Milton, and the original window of the 10th has just passed. And this isn't a near earth orbit mission, what's gonna happen to that mission?

I wonder what SpaceX does to compensate for the lack of payload on Starship. Do they have some sort of non-deployable mass simulator? Do they underfuel the Ship/booster on the launch pad? Do they dump significant amounts of fuel in space? Do they land heavy with a bunch of excess propellant on board? Or does Starship V1 simply have close to 0kg payload capacity to LEO in its current configuration?

According the website this directly form the website If this command is not sent prior to the completion of the boostback burn, or if automated health checks show unacceptable conditions with Super Heavy or the tower, the booster will default to a trajectory that takes it to a landing burn and soft splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico, they do not do it when you said they they do in the video.

Wouldn’t the time used for filling the tanks depend on how full they will be filled? I would think they would want the fill time to remain constant compared to the launch time. So if they want more fuel in the tank, they have to e to start loading earlier in the countdown.

With the change in acceleration during hot staging, the extra time would be advantageous to propellant settling: The sudden reduction in acceleration due to the engine shut downs would allow propellant to flow forward until it came to the same speed as the tank, then it would settle back to the bottom. The extra four seconds would help quite a bit.

Call me nutty, I just think having a SHB coming down close to the tank farm is less than ideal. Given my druthers and a large budget, I think a launch tower design that pivoted the chopsticks out over the water - and not inconsequentially, that much farther away from the tank farm and/or supply piping - would be somewhat less fraught, even if it complicated the tower and chopstick design. It would make an egads abort deflection easier to accomplish with nothing but water underneath the booster all the way to touchdown.
