To put this into perspective, each of those rockets is as tall as a 21 story building and they both landed upright from falling at terminal velocity towards the Earth.
He might be a genius, but working on catching up 3 falling boosters that cost 11 million dollars each, originates from a simple common sens idea, that nobody wanted to do before.

please, the 'flat earth' crowd has no actual belief in the earth being flat, they want attention. it is all literally just for attention. there is no rationale for the earth being flat. The concept that the earth must be flat due to it looking that way from the viewers perspective isn't even true once one has been out on the ocean on a clear day and seen things move 'up' over the horizon as they approach, and disappear 'down' under the horizon and behind it as they move away. Tall masts, the hills behind the harbor, etc. dont even bother with 'flat earth' idiots, you can literally see its round if you work on a fishing boat. plenty have, with no reason to lie about there being a horizon things pass over. everyone knows its round. anyone making a big deal about it being flat is lying not about the earth being round, they are lying about having any respect for others time and energy, they want attention, they want arguments about the things they suggest, they are narcissists, period.
I once got into an argument with an flat earther (mainly for my own amusement because I was bored that day). You will not believe the BS these people genuinely believe in! He tried to put math and physics into his explanations (even though math and physics actually prove the existence of a round earth) and tried to convince me that the reason that no one has been to the edge was that the government would stop you from getting there...It was funny at first, but it just got to a point where I thought I was losing brain cells just hearing this guy talk.
This is a great event. It's not just the technical know-how that is on display; the openness, enthusiasm and optimism of the American people is on display. The margin between boosters igniting and hearing the boom is approx 24 seconds. Multiply by 343 meters per second gives you... that cameraman is roughly 8.23 km away from the landing pad. Or about 5.1 miles
The sonic booms happened much sooner in time than at the point when they are heard in the video. The rockets are able to move a significant distance before the sound of the booms travels to reach the observers in the video.
Dave Sims, sound travels at around 1300 Km PER HOUR while light travels at 300000 Km PER SECOND so, because this footage is from miles away, there is a delay of 10+ seconds. the rocket starts falling to the earth from vacuum so it reaches a velocity higher than the terminal velocity on earth. the three sonic booms are created from "cones" that the rocket creates by displacing air molucules while it is at super sonic speed. the cones are created by the engine ignition, legs of the rocket at their most extended point, and the grid fins. 3 sonic booms from each rocket.
Never could understand why people would congratulate people whose only connection to the event involved is that they happen to reside in the same country where the event happened. Spacex is not a public company. It is privately owned. Other than standing 5 miles away watching, what exactly did they contribute to warrant congratulations?

This incredible! Those landing burns were so delayed! [Edit:] Compared to a typical single-engine landing burn. This one used a sequence of 1-3-1 and it's the first time that's been done while landing back on solid ground, so also the first time we've been able to see what it looks like. And it's awesome!
They never meant to reuse this one center core, but still I agree, rip :( Would've been awesome if it was literally 100% success! But i'm sure that by next launch they will have watched the data and fixed the central core also. :D

SpaceX is a privately owned company, it is investors' funded. SpaceX makes its money from launching payloads for NASA. SpaceX also do 65% of the worldwide commercial launch businesses. Falcon heavy launch price is only one third of ULA launch price. Between 2009 to 2012, not a single US space companies got any worldwide commercial launch business, dominated by Russia, France, China. Yeah, NASA only funded SpaceX and provided support for the launches that NASA contracted them for (CRS and commercial crew). All the other launches SpaceX conducts are paid for by private satellite providers. I think at this point SpaceX launches far more for the private sector than they do for NASA. Not sure how the numbers work out, but their private launch business is probably fairly profitable.

Yes, but honestly it is ok since it was never going to be reused to begin with. The three boosters landing were not the primary goals of this launch. More like icing on the cake. This rocket was version 4. Version 5 of Falcon Heavy is what will be utilized next and reused for multiple launches.
my country is a former soviet country so most of the cartoons back then were from the soviet era even tho soviet union was long gone. I remember they had a lot of cartoons about cosmonauts and space and stuff. every single spaceship would land exacltly like that.. then i realised that rockets don't land like that, and now they do.
This is only the beginning for SpaceX. The future will no doubt be amazing, especially once they figure out how to move beyond rockets into more sophisticated and even faster propulsion methods.
That's not a sonic boom. That's the sound of the reverse rockets kicking in on landing. It is delayed for the distance. Its like thunder at a long range.

Strange how Americans banned Concorde supersonic overflights for 3 years because they didn’t like sonic booms but they love it when their own vehicles make a noise.

Ian, let's be honest, Concorde was a threat to US homeland security, it was banned because is was too fast for US air traffic controllers and the USAF to react to a 'gone rogue' condition. This was quite a prophetic measure when you consider 9/11. The City of Cape Canaveral has a population of 10,000 people,many of which can atest to hearing NASA's sonic booms. We have relatives living over there and we've visited multiple times before, I would recommend it to anyone, it's superb.
@Wayne Simpson Sources? The population is 0 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Base between Launch Pad 39a and Landing Zone 1. The rocket at no point flies over any home, only wildlife refuge. Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island, south of Cape Canaveral, is populated.
