From Merritt Island- Great sonic booms at the end!
We were roughly 10 miles from the launch pad with a very enthusiastic crowd. Shot with an Olympus OMD EM10 Mk II camera with Panasonic 100-300mm lens. An epic event to witness and document!
Please like/comment/subscribe as we may have another Falcon 9 launch from Vandenburg in a few weeks.

Having grown up watching the Apollo flights, and landings.. seeing this just brought a smile.. the twin touchdowns were astonishing. Amazing what a little math and science can do. Thank you for filming this and sharing.

This is a really good video!!! You got the entry burn too! (Comming back into the atmosphere). Those double Sonic booms are created off the rear and nose of each booster. Very cool!

They landed perfectly to plan. They were staggered so the radar from each wouldn't interfere with each other.
@ChallengerNetwork

I understand they had to be staggered to avoid any potential telemetry issues, but for the most part it was practically simultaneous. Still gotta give major props to Elon for thinking outside the box!

The follow on sound after the boom is actually the sound of the rocket engines firing arriving behind the shock wave. After all, you hear the sonic bang because the object was travelling faster than its own sound.

Also, sound delay check, 1 minute 12 seconds, approximately. About 15.2 miles from LC-39A. The sonic boom propagation rate nearly matched the time it took for the boosters to hit the pavement and cutoff engines. Amazing stuff.

@GlassTopRX7

The pops are the sonic booms the rumble is the booster firing on the landing. I imagine that had the video go on longer the rumble would have stopped and then you may have heard then again for the touch down burn. I say may because the water creates a lot of white noise that can cancel the sound closer to the ground from my experience at shuttle launches. You get multiple pops from each booster because of the stabilizer fins, similar to how the shuttle would create double booms on landing from the body and tail. Great job with the camera work.

@NightRunner417
@NightRunner417 6 лет назад
That's absolutely brilliant, one of the things I'll always remember that I got to see happen in my lifetime. Question, for those of you who got to see it in person - do you know what time of day, Eastern Standard, that the sonic booms occurred on reentry of the boosters? I have a homemade low frequency geophone that logs a graph every day and I'd like to see if it picked up the vibrations from launch and reentry. I get a lot of interference spikes from vehicle traffic so it's like hunting a needle in a haystack.

@nasanchez964
@nasanchez964 6 лет назад
Well, first skeptics, conspiratards and flatearthers (I don't which one are you) said rockets ware fake. Then when proved wrong, said the return of the first stage was cgi. Now you're proved wrong, but still deny space .I've even seen someone claiming some sort "no G zone" in the dome one you go higher a certain (not specified) altitude, where satellites would float forever. Don't you think there's a pattern being repeating here? There's people out there still denying these videos still claiming is CGI, but you seem to accept this video as valid proof. What would you say to those who still think the way you used to?

By at least 2:40 I don't see anything that could be flame at the head of the smoke plume or anywhere. At 2:42 I think there are two faint spots a bit back from the head of the plume. Then I see only one, but a bit stronger, but it vanishes for 1 frame at 2:45. Just the one light spot until 2:49 when the 2nd one appears. All this time where is the main rocket and a flame from it? At 2:54 the two lights vanish but come back and vanish by 2:56.
@lilbo1Y1
@lilbo1Y1 5 лет назад
It's all about distance, the center core is so far away and so high that the human eye and typical cameras can't detect a flame or light from so far away. The rocket is in low orbit space when the side boosters fall off. We can't see that far.
