Spain’s Plans for a Tunnel to Africa

Spain and Morocco are considering building a 9.8 billion dollar tunnel across the Strait of Gibraltar, providing the first physical link between Europe and Africa. Due to the strait of Gibraltar’s geography, proposals for both bridges and tunnels across it have been seriously considered. However, nowadays, a tunnel is being focused on. If constructed, a tunnel would transform the local economies and boost intercontinental trade. However, it would also come with several issues. Despite this, the concept is being seriously pursued today and could soon be constructed.

3 % too steep for high-speed rail? That must be a mistake. HS trains can usually climb up to 4 % grade. However, it is usually too steep for freight trains, but probably doable with some extra loco power.

Yes. Incase of steeper slopes, one could prefer rack rails and ofcourse the extra locomotive power.

@@triggerwarning7662 so not too steep for reality but too steep for that long drawn out bureaucracy. Great.
@triggerwarning7662
@triggerwarning7662 3 года назад
 @Lucas Thompson Bureaucracy is not the issue here. It's more to do with the source of funds and that Morocco cannot be connected to any other countries to promote through-trade to Europe by rail - the border with Algeria is closed, there is no train link to Mauritania and the only rail system they have there is to the dessert phosphate mines and not south towards Senegal and The Gambia. West Africa does not run to the Standard gauge that Morocco does and Spanish HSR does. The train in Morocco only goes up to Marrakesh currently. That's almost 500km away from the border with Mauritania. The first bit goes through mountains (which is a marginal issue as the line is being extended to Agadir on the other side of the mountains, but the rest will be tracks through the dessert and will have a significant cost, just to connect it to Mauritania which has no real exports except minerals which are fine to ship by slow boats.

Hey guys, I want to make a couple corrections! At 6:08 it's stated that 3 degrees is too steep for high speed trains. In reality, 3 degrees is too steep for freight trains, which I confused. Also, at 0:55, I said east when I meant west. My apologies!
@je4a301
@je4a301 3 года назад
Are you sure about that? I think that this would be a game changing point since I don't think it is economically feasible if only passenger trains would be able to pass through. Therefore, trade wouldn't benefit by any means. And this is critical considering that the purpose of the channel tunnel e.g. is partially for freight and considering that the demand for a freight line between this route is probably way higher than the demand for passengers. This is even more true when other African countries have developed even more and demand the connection for trade to Europe.
@corner63
@corner63 3 года назад
But in railways engineering they talk about %, not degrees. Check it.

@FuturologyChannel 3 года назад
@@corner63 Ahaha, very interesting. It seems I was correct initially then. Thank you!
@mrtyke3708
@mrtyke3708 3 года назад
@@FuturologyChannel Yes high speed trains can do grades up to around 4% since electric motors are usually places throughout the train for better traction and acceleration/deceleration as well as the fact that they are lighter than freight trains. Freight trains though with the only power usually coming from where the locomotives are at the front of the train have a harder time tackling grades. They can do grades of 3% but that can often require helper locomotives or splitting the train apart making it costly, time consuming and potentially dangerous ie: runaway trains. The freight industry likes a max grade of 2.2% as the standard. So it may be feasible to make the tunnel at a grade of 2.2% to make it easier for freight to be hauled through the tunnel.

I'm not blaming them, the sub-Saharan African immigrants are just way too many to be stopped. Thus, if a tunnel is built between Morocco and Spain, the freeloaders will have a highway to reach Europe. They already arrive by boat by the thousands, nearly every month. Correction, for a tunnel to Morocco. Morocco is a country in (North) Africa, while Africa overall is a continent, same as that Spain is a country in southern Europe, while Europe is a continent too. Further this plan is vice versa, and existed since 1900. Morocco's also came with several plans to connect "more" with Iberia; while the connection between both sides of the mediterranean was already there. Now with the WC 2030 bid between Iberia and Morocco this project has re started again. Good luck to these countries.

They could probably build an intermediate project whereby two artificial islands were made, one each off the coast of Morocco and Spain where the straits are about 50 meters deep, and build a bridge from each coast to the artificial island. Each island would then have a ferry port. The travel distance by ferry would then be reduced by 40%. Eventually a tunnel could be built between both islands. The tunnel would probably have to be partly bored, then where the channel is deepest or the rock more problematic, an anchored tube would be used. So if the thing is built, it would probably be a combination of all the proposals.

Large capacity power cables in the service tunnel to just too expensive compared to just laying the cables on the ocean floor. Terrorism and irregular migration are the main issues for tunnels - the situation would be the same as at Channel Tunnel. Hard rock tunnelling is relatively cheap with TBMs - they use rollers to fracture the rock face with pressure rather than gouge or grind it. At the depth proposed, they will not find the slop encountered tunnelling under the Alps. 3% grade is not an issue for trains - a slower speed as grade increases for just 40 km will just a few minutes to service times. Freight trains would just use extra locos in the tunnel. However, without a few red herrings the vid would get less viewers.
@d.g.rohrig4063
@d.g.rohrig4063 3 года назад
To take care of the grades and distance required at each end, perhaps a dual upwards spiral design at said ends would facilitate this issue. Just a thought..

It also has to be taken into account that people could use the tunnel as an "easier" way to go through the straight of Gibraltar, this could cause several accidents and would need incredibly high security to this to not be an issue, and not only because of the illegality of this, but because of the danger of crossing a closed railways in a rather dark tunnel.

These panacea projects always look good on paper and in the imagination. They don't always make sense, though. There's a bridge in Greece across the Gulf of Corinth that is so pricey that the nearby ferry services are doing great business because they're cheaper than the tolls. There's nothing in that area of North Africa that is so important that it needs a tunnel or bridge crossing.

Wouldn't the access tunnel distance to the actual sea issue be resolved if we just turn it into a spiral ramp tunnel of sorts, like highway exit ramps and multistory parking entry points? If we could consider spiral tunnel ramps as a viable option, you could even shorten the portal's distance from shore to any distance that we want, and just cram the rest of the tunnel's length into the spiral itself. The price tag seems too low for such a project though. I mean this sounds more like a 20-30 billion USD kind of project rather than 9b.
