With the spalting and grain pattern, that turned out to be one sweet bowl. The deep bowl and a fantastic grain pattern really made this bowl sparkle!!!! It was a real joy to watch you turn it. KEEP ON TURNING

This is one of my favorites. The grain is so sweet looking. So dramatic overall. Again, you show your true talent in this.

It is pretty cool, Stewart. Not sure where this one is, it's here in the house, somewhere. But, when someone comments on it and I see that picture, it reminds me that it is kinda pretty! 😊

Phil - for the past 18 months I have done nothing but watched Wood Turning RU-vid videos - you are one of my top 5 turners I tune into. Well, in a few weeks I will start building (actually re-building) my shop and will start on first time bowl/box/hollow vessel turning. My story (to fill in some answers) is not really good so the short of it is that I had a shop built and had just received my new Nova Galaxy Lathe and my new Jet Band Saw - when (the same week) I suffered a serious accident that included broken body parts, brain damage and a coma - it has taken this long to relearn a lot of things and I am just now getting up the courage to re-build my shop. Due to the brain damage I probably have watched your videos a number of times and I have always learned something small and new. I greatly appreciated your tempo/pace of your videos and really enjoy your patter to what your doing. Please keep posting - I still have a long way to go in terms of re-learning. Always could be worse - I could be on the wrong side of grass :) Thanks and “Once An Eagle Scout, Always an Eagle Scout”

You've been through a lot, Robert and now you have a lot to look forward to. I cannot know what you have been through but I do know what it's like to rebuild the shop and have a place to go each day to create. Best wishes and thank you for taking your time to watch and comment! Phil

You are NOT the only one, but I'm so glad you chose my video to watch. We do need more women turners, though there are lots of very talented ones out there. Thank you for your comment and I think, by now, it's 2019 in Australia so Happy New Year! Phil

Phil, this is a beautiful bowl! One of my favorite things is old maps... well, all maps I suppose, if I'm honest. I find them fascinating. On many of the pieces that you have turned I have seen ancient maps of distant worlds. This one took my breath away when you put it on the turntable at the end. I could sit and look at that for hours, just imagining all of the places shown on that beautiful bowl. Thanks for beautifying our lives with your art, and warming our hearts with your humor. Blessings, Donna

Gorgeous bowl. I love the shape and the wood is beyond gorgeous. When you 1st showed the bowl on the bottom it looks like a seascape. There's the horizon line and waves coming in to shore. And the outside of the bowl a globe comes to mind with some continents on it. Must be my art imagination. LOL

How did I miss commenting on this turn when watched it the first & the second time? I love turned Spalted Maple, it just seems to have a special presence when turned, in particular when it is turned by one who displays such empathy with the wood that he works with. You are a delight to watch Phil because of the way you share your thoughts with us in tough turnings & easy turnings alike, you allow us to be drawn into your thoughts & feelings with every piece. Great piece wit quite stunning spalting shown up beautifully by your choice of finish. Thanks for sharing, I just wish I had commented much earlier. Regards, Don from South Aust.

Great vid, Phil! Thank you for the inspiration. I have a round in back, 18" dia, 24" length, butt of Norway maple tree trunk. It's been sitting on the ground out back for since Sept, '17. Am hoping for wonderment once I slab it out sometime next month. Excitement abounds!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Thank you, CC! If it's been laying on the ground maybe it will be spalted. That could be cool! Phil

That is a beautiful bowl and some wicked wood! Nice haul you had dropped off! I was wondering if you ever turn them while they are still really wet and dry them afterwards at all? Also I think your reasoning behind using tailstock pressure to get the front face of the jaws to seat really firm is more than grounded. And good save on the bottom by keeping your hand on the switch, you have some good reflexes there! It would have probably bounced twice on the floor before I would have hit the switch Lol! Happy turning Phil, keep em' coming! Kyler
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Thanks, Kyler, for your great comments! I haven't turned but one or two wet pieces. It's fun but messy! LOL! As far as reflexes, well, you'll have to watch the video I'm editing, now. Not so much!

Hi Phil ....Spalting maple is so nice ....watching on You Tube many times and wish I had some ...then... ....friend next door give me a 12 foot log 12 inches dia !!!!!! couple weeks back all spalted maple !!! cut down last year . I have made 2 bowls , just cut a piece right before I watched you , turn it tomorrow . Still very wet but I super dry it very fast no cracking at all . That Howards stuff , just look at it on Amazon ...how good is it for direct food touch , how long for curing ? I know what you mean about the tool steel not holding it edge , from overseas ....I am going to make my own out of Cobalt tool steel , do not think there is any better tool steel . I have used in turning steel many times for many , many years , use it in milling too Beautiful bowl Phil , any shape looks so nice with Spalting is there
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
Hi Bruce! Wow, 12 feet of spalted maple! Good going! I don't know how the Howards is for food, but my guess is, it's fine. It's all natural ingredients. Dry time is about a half-hour. Curing time I don't know but it hasn't been an issue. Making your own tools is a real skill, congratulations on that!
@psilverz4848

Product info says don't use it on food prep surfaces, but use Howard Butcher Block Conditioner or Howard Cutting Board Oil instead. Not sure you'd want to ingest carnauba wax, not knowing how it was processed

Beautiful bowl. Question for you... Generally how long do you sand a bowl like this? Thanks,
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 4 года назад
Thank you! Each bowl is different, of course. I go through several grits, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 240, 320 and 400. I would say it generally takes at least an hour and up to maybe 3 hours. I just don't keep accurate numbers for how much time I'm spending on a piece. I am pretty picky about getting it right so I'm sure I spend more time sanding then some folks do. Phil

How longdo you microwave your wood for bugs?
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
It depends on the size of the wood and how wet/dry it is, Gerald. Typically, about 1 minute on high, wait 20 minutes to cool down and repeat 2-3 times.

I will admit that when you started to lower the height of the bowl edge, my response was "NO!"
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
I understand that, Phillip. First I said "it's going to be a natural edge" and then I cut it off! Hahaha... But, what do you think, now? It's still pretty natural, I think. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I truly appreciate it! Phil (Phillip) with two LL's, too!
