Spanish, Portuguese or Italian: Which language to choose? 

To be honest I'd learn Spanish first because it is more useful and it will be easier for learning the other ones ❤️

I'm an Italian native speaker and for us spanish is the easiest language to learn for the easy pronunciation and many words are similar to italian

One of the main reasons to learn Spanish is because of the U.S. if yu go to a market or Target or Walmart or Big Lots stores yu will always find someone that speaks Spanish. Even Politicians advertise in Spanish.

I studied Spanish for years in school and just couldn’t get past intermediate level. I just started taking Italian this year and I feel like I’m learning and understanding so much better; part of that could be because of the similarity to Spanish, and already knowing some Spanish words, but to me, Italian just seems to make more sense grammatically and somehow my Italian pronunciation is easier for computers to understand than my Spanish pronunciation is.

Whoever learns and perfect any language aside his or her mother tongue is a hero/heroine💪. It takes hardwork, determination and courage to learn another language and perfect it. If you have these attributes, you can learn any language.

Portuguese is the most beautiful in my opinion 😄

I have a lot of personal connections with Italy, and my level at the moment is something like Intermediate. When it comes to Spanish, I like it, too, and actually would like to learn it in the future. About Portuguese: I suppose I would love to study it as well! One of the similarities between Russian (my native language) and Portuguese that amazed me was the rhythm and intonation. It's scarily similar!

I like italian it just sounds beautiful to me,however I had to start with German which I have recently completed B2.I will be starting French in summer

I’m from Middle East i speak Arabic as a first language and i speak British English as second language and i speak Spanish as third language i understand pretty much Spanish i’m not in a bad level but kind good i’m still 16 year’s old i’m still going forward i’m in love in learning European languages.

I have partial Spanish, Portuguese and Spanish ancestry. I learned Spanish in high school and university in my home city Toronto. I was nearly fluent and Latin Americans said I spoke it like a native. I haven’t spoken Spanish in years, but I can still read and understand some of it. I did a “crash course” in Italian for my first trip to Italy in 2018 and people complimented me on my Italian. I had to relearn it for my September 2023 trip to Italy and again, I was able to use the language. I am now learning Portuguese to prepare me for my trip to Portugal next year. In my opinion, if you know one romance language, learning another one will be relatively easy. I also know some French.

So true about the similarities between Spanish and Portuguese! I’m Mexican American and used to work in a department store in downtown Chicago, we always received lots of Brazilian tourists and I was able to have a basic conversation with them and we were able understand each other (due to Spanish and Portuguese having 89% lexical similarity).

I'm from Brazil, but first I learnt English (and always improving) listening this vídeo for example then now I started learning Spanish..but sure it's kinda just improving and training the speak because it's very very easy to Portuguese speaker to understand about 90% of the Spanish language, sometimes it's like a Portuguese with accent and some percentage of differents words, very interesting but I think is useful to study and trainer to do it more correct.😁😁 About Italian language I like the sound a lot and also because it's the most language similar sound with the Latim language the Mother tongue of romances languages very cool.😁

Eve, please let me correct you. It's Guinea-Bissau the country that speaks Portuguese, not Equatorial Guinea. There are 3 countries in Africa with the name of Guinea: Equatorial Guinea 🇬🇶( The official language is Spanish). Guinea🇬🇳(the official language is French) and Guinea-Bissau🇬🇼(the official language is Portuguese). In Africa Spanish language is officially spoken in my country, which is Equatorial Guinea 🇬🇶.

I'm a spanish native speaker. I also speak English and French. Now i'm torn between Portuguese, Italian, Chinese and Korean. Probably I will go with Portuguese cause it's easy and it's quite useful for Iberia and Latin America (the markets an enterprise hire a spanish speaker for)

I'm a native Spanish speaker and I learned Portuguese a long time ago. I haven't practiced it much recently. I also learned the basics of Italian but I would really like to get fluent. As a Spanish speaker, the easiest part of both Italian and Portuguese is: Italian = Pronunciation Portuguese = Vocabulary and grammar Italian vocabulary and grammar are more similar to French. And Portuguese pronunciation is a little more similar to French, in my opinion. That's because Portuguese has nasal vowels but Spanish and Italian don't. Also the rr in Portuguese is like French r. Spanish and Italian have the same r sound.

I was trying to decide between Brazilian Portuguese and Italian. I’m not interested in Spanish honestly. I think I will go with the Brazilian Portuguese.

Me being an American in the south, went to Miami and my friend and I had a hard time asking where the bathroom was at A DOLLAR GENERAL! No one there spoke English! Very odd and awkward trying to explain, especially as a young teen 😅

I love Spanish since I'm half Dominican LOL. But I do also ❤ Brazilian Portuguese. By listening to a lot of Brazilian music, I am so familiar with Brazilian Portuguese. Italian is beautiful too. I took a few clases when I was in college.

Spanish is my target language, i am learning English, and my next language will be portuguése.

I love Italian language and love Italy. I know that may be it is not very useful language when it comes to professional reasons but I don't care about it. I want to speak this language fluently. But Italian is not so easy as it seems to be (I am Polish).

I learned Italian because it's closer to all of the other languages. I was never thought Spanish growing up and when I asked questions, some people would refuse to help me. So, I gave up on Spanish and read Italian books and I was enjoying how I discover how close it was to English.

My vision about this: Easy to "difficult" 1. Spanish 2. Italian 3. Portuguese BUT... If you know Spanish, Portuguese becomes very easy to learn. Better, if you really know Spanish and Portuguese, Italian becomes a gift for you. ; ) They are all beautiful lenguages!!

Spanish and Portuguese are Iberian languages and very interchangeable, if you learn Portuguese it's like learning two languages at the same time, all Portuguese speakers understand Spanish and can easily speak it. Italian will also become easier to understand while French will take a little longer, my advice is.....Portuguese!

I am really in love with the sound of Italian. But since I have no plans to live in Italy or going there on a regular basis I kinda don't need it. So I guess Spanish is my choice. But to be honest here in Germany, I can basically do everything with German and English. It's very rare i get in contact with Spanish speaking people. :(

Hello Eve, Spanish is spoken in more than 20 countries. You forgot my country , Equatorial Guinea 🇬🇶. It is an African country with Spanish as the official language. Here in Africa we speak Spanish. So, please don't forget Equatorial Guinea 🇬🇶 whet counting Spanish-speaking counties.

I don't think that Mandarin is widespread outside of China and Taiwan. Not compared to the other major languages such as French, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic or English. Even most Chinese communities outside of China are more likely to speak Cantonese although this is changing to Mandarin.

How to learn a language....you wanna know how?...get a lot of freaking input. Output is not important at the beginning and will never be in the forfront. You need to get input.....A TON. What can that entail?: - reading - listening (radio, podcasts, vids, listening to friends that know your target language or just people that know your target language in general) - watching stuff, like vids, movies, tv series etc. Put with a big discrepancy more time into reading. The reasons are as followed. - way more input in a short period of time while also learning how to read the language (knowing how to read stuff in your target language is always of advantage) - because there are no pictures (usually) and no video the author has to describe a lot of stuff which equals out in you getting input that you probably wouldn't meet in the other options or at least wouldn't meet as often in the other options. read stuff that interests you and if it is easy to understand than that is a bonus. As long as you read you learn even if you do not understand a whole lot. Generally speaking you will pick up a lot of things subconsiously..for instance certain letter combinations, you'll meet certain words with a high frequency and start to read these words way faster even if you might not understand this word/these words at the moment; you'll pick up on grammar (for instance endings, when natives use which ending in which scenario), you'll pick up on how natives use certain words and their meaning in different contexts and probably way more. If I convinced you and you are about to start more reading for your target language I'll highly advice you to not overthing stuff. Don't look up every word, don't even look up every second word. You might not know a lot of words and you might not understand certain phrases which is okay just continue reading. The reason for that advice is because once you start looking up every word or every second word you'll waste a lot of time, effort and probably get discouraged. You might think it doesn't take a whole lot of time checking out an unknown word, especially with the internet nowadays but you will be thinking incorrectly. Most words have a bunch of different meanings depending on the context which in turn means that you can't just take the first meaning that the web or online dictionary spits out. And what about in the same phrase there are two or more words that you don't know and you'll look up every one of them. You try to figure out which meaning fits, you think you got the meaning and after reading that phrase with these meaning in mind you end up finding out that it just doesn't fit....congratulations you just wasted several minutes and are now annoyed and frustrated. That time you could have just continued reading. Some words you'll understand later in your journey. Sometimes it takes time. Even when that doesn't happen but you have met that word already so many times. You have a reference point, then you might want to check out the meaning of that word in that context you last met the word and in that case there is a higher likelyhood of you finding the correct meaning and being confident about it as well. Now about me, who am I to tell all that stuff. Who am I to say how to effectively learn a language, weeeeell......I am just a rando in the internet at the end of the day. I don't really have credentials to show for and I can only tell you that I know three languages and especially the last language I have learned pretty effectivly by that method. Besides english I know german (which is my native tongue) and russian. Russian is the last language I learned. I would also like to add that if you will follow my advice you might and probably will doubt that advice several times throughout your journey. I "know" that for a fact because I have lived through it. What I have described is NOT how it is teached pretty much anywhere. Not in schools, not in language schools, not in these places where people do their exams for "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" (aka A1, A2, B1 etc)..nowhere. Which is the reason why you'll question it many times. The first time I got introduced to it was when I actively wanted to learn more about that subject through the internet. In school barely anyone gets really efficent in languages. In english you might make a case for the opposite but for the next langauge that is not case. I don't know one person from school who got efficent in french or spanish when I still went to school and had these subjects even though we all had to put in so many hours into these languages, had to do so many homeworks etc. For me and for you it'll probably be very similar: I saw very quick and rapid progress at the very beginning. But this progress will at one point or another stail and I wouldn't notice it for several weeks if not months. That happened to me several times throughout the journey. I doubted what I did and several times thought that at that point I needed to change something. In these moments I thought about my conversations. If I remembered that the people I often talked to in that language started speaking either faster with me or used more complexe vocabulary than I knew I was on the right track. Or if one of these people told me that my language skills improved I knew I was on the right track. Which helped me even more so tbh was when I noticed that I got better at reading and that it started to be easier for me and that it was that energy consuming for my brain anymore. Everytime I noticed that it didn't take much longer till I noticed my language skill being better than they used to. And guess what....everytime I worked on my language by reading as my main focus. Everytime I doubted this method and thought about my reading skills I noticed them improving, being better compared to months or even weeks ago.

My favorite language is Italian.✨ I'm studying to become an Italian-French interpreter at university, and although Italian grammar is hard to memorize, I've never enjoyed school so much.😍😍 I'm not learning Spanish, because I think it's already learned too much and other languages deserve this attention too. Anyway, I manage to understand some of what the Spanish speakers say because it's similar to the Portuguese I've been studying for a few years.😊

Does learning Portuguese make Spanish easier to learn

I don`t understand wy you put the brazilian flag next to Portugal? The mother country of the Lusitanian language is Portugal! If you put Brazil then you have to put the rest of the portuguese speaking countries; Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Cape Verde, Goa, Diu, Daman, Macau, East Timor, etc. In my opinion you are not being correct.

Eve ya like more latines idioms ya like italian, french spanish and portuguese. You have a latine soul. It's sounds funny and weird on same time cos ya is german, ya don't have much attraction and passion by germanic culture. It's not much natural to brazilians and americans eyes. You love portuguese and spanish we known that. You cherishe our heart with affection by our culture.
