We would usually say: "I would like you to..." "I want you to..." It can, in certain cases, sound like a command or an ultimatum.

I didn't understand why both are correct: 6:01 mark. Ella necesita que tu "la" llames (or) que tu "le" llames. Is the use of "le" or "la" a regional oddity?

Hi! Mis padres quieren que yo LES/LOS visite. LES is an indirect object, notice how LES is matching "a ellos". In order to know who "les" refers to, you either need some extra context other than the sentence or for the information to appear inside the sentence. "Los" is a direct object, so it replaces a word in a sentence (ultimately, MIS PADRES). So in this case, both options work. I hope this helps!

En realidad solo es correto "los". El uso erróneo de "les" es algo que tenemos muy extendido en España.

Hola Pedro y Andrea, Soy estadounidense que vivió en México por 15 meses y necesito que me aclares algo que leí hace unos años en un libro de español para extranjeros. Y deseo tomar esta oportunidad de comunicarme con dos personas que ya saben hablar español e inglés porque mi pregunta y/o duda se trata del verbo ESPERAR y el uso de subjuntivo. Entiendo perfectamente el uso del subjuntivo en español con respeto a la expresión ESPERAR QUE la cual quiere decir TO HOPE THAT en inglés. Ahora viene mi duda. En el libro que ya mencioné arriba el autor dijo que hubo una excepción cuando no se debe usar subjuntivo con el expresión ESPERAR QUE. El autor dijo que ESPERAR QUE también puede significar TO EXPECT THAT en inglés y cuando se quiere decir EXPECT THAT no se usa el subjuntivo, sino el indicativo. Unos ejemplos: I expect you to do well on the exam. Esto sería espero que SACAS buenas notas en el examen. Y, claro, I hope you do well on the exam sería espero que SAQUES buenas notas en el examen. ¿Ya ven mi duda? Todo depende de la traducción del verbo ESPERAR en inglés porque se puede agumentar que TO EXPECT no es igual a TO HOPE. La verdad es que entiendo lo que dijo el autor del libro y también sé que es posible que él se haya equivocado a lo grande. Espero que me puedan ayudar con esta cosita que me ha vuelto loco por años. Que no me castiguen mucho si no pueden entender mi español o mi duda. Gracias por tomar el tiempo para repasar este comentario.

To answer your question, I’d say that in Spanish the verb “esperar” sometimes means “being optimistic about realizing that what I thought is actually true”. In a few cases we can use this verb with the complement in indicative rather than subjunctive. It would be another way to say “I trust”. In the sentence “yo espero que tú eres lo suficientemente maduro como para entender...” we don’t use it in subjunctive because we’re not referring to the future, it’s more like an idea of confirming that my impressions are real at the moment of speaking. More examples: “yo espero que realmente comes lo que me dices que comes”, “yo espero que tu papá nos está diciendo la verdad” (yo confío en que tu papá...). However, natives prefer to use “yo confío’. “Yo confío en que sacas buenas notas en los exámenes”, which means “I trust in your getting good marks (or grades)”. For that reason, “espero que sacas buenas notas” makes sense only if “en los exámenes” is said in plural because, as I mentioned before, it’s necessary a series of events in the past that can support my impressions of your behaviour.

Hi Daman. For the first phrase you can say "Me corté el pelo". For the second one, "Pinté la casa". Even if you didn't do it yourself. You can clarify by saying "contraté a alguien para que pintara la casa". I hope this helps!

Therefore, to say, ‘I hope that my friends come to my house.’ In Spanish it is, ‘Espero que mis amigos vengan a mi casa.’ However, if you are referring to the past as in, ‘Last week I hoped that my friends would come to my house’? Would you still use the subjunctive?

Seth Cope “Le” is only possible if the verb follows the pattern ‘to do something for someone”. This verb, however, follows the pattern ‘to do to someone’. ‘Llamar a alguien’ doesn’t have the “something” part in it. For that reason you can only say “te recomienda que llames a tu familia” (phone someone). The verbs with the pattern ‘to do something for/to someone’ are: -Decirle algo a alguien. Ex. Quiero que le digas la verdad a tu abuela. -Prestarle algo a alguien. Ex. Necesito que le prestes el carro a tu hermano. -Inyectarle algo a alguien. Ex. El paciente requiere que le inyectes una dosis de 100 ml. -Hacerle algo a alguien. Ex. Quiero que le hagas ese pastel de chocolate que te queda tan rico. Etc.
