I’ve just lost my wife and she loved the Sparks, heartbreaking to listen to an album she will never get to hear. The title track is insanely catchy.

The cd arrived today and doesn’t disappoint, I believe I read they are playing at Glastonbury next month

I've only been through the album twice so I''ll reserve comment for now, except to say that it seems to be a grower, both in the songs growing on me, and the flow of the album itself growing or building into something better and better as it goes along. Can you imagine the pressure on those guys to hit one out of the park after all the attention and accolades they've received over the past couple of years? Ron and Russel don't strike me as the type to buckle under pressure. But still.

I saw them in Glasgow a month ago and got a vinyl limited edition three days ago, very cool looking with the album cover colourfully printed on both sides of the actual record… but no leaflet or even track list. However, I haven’t stopped listening to it, far far better than I expected. I agree with you, there is a fluidity in the whole album that Hypopotamus and Drip Drip lacked despite being great, I don’t know how they manage since there is a lot of variety: electronic, rock and classical go hand in hand with harmony. I dare to say that it is even their greatest one, flawless and without long and pretentious songs. Mona Lisa’s track makes my hair stand on end. Very good review.

You've convinced me to have a listen and if it's as great as you suggest will get this. It'll be the first Sparks album Ive bought/ heard since Indiscreet. I thought 'Nothing is as Good As They Say it Is' is superb, but that's the only track Ive heard so far. Thanks for the early review Larry

Hi Larry, I'm patiently waiting for my copy to arrive, hopefully it will be here tomorrow. I'm glad that it is shorter than both Drip and Hippo as they tended to be a bit bloated and contain some lesser moments. Before Stud kept mentioning these guys I don’t remember ever hearing of them. I ignored his recommendations for a few years now. But suddenly they seem to be everywhere. The Cate Blanchett video grabbed me. I watched Annette. I plan to watch the Edgar Wright movie. If nothing else, I am intrigued and like a lot of what Ive heard.

You should def review some Franz Ferdinand. They are awesome.

I just listened to it on RU-vid, but had a little trouble playing it in order. I will be getting a cd next week and it will get more listens. Right now I really like the three singles, maybe Veronica Lake the most of those. Gee, That Was Fun, Escalator, Let's Go For a Ride and A Love Story are other favorites right now...but this is the first listen, so I expect to like others a lot more soon! Woo hoo!

I ordered all of the formats of it. I waited in all day for them but they never arrived. I felt like crying in my tea (well, I don't like coffee. 🙂) I've been listening to it all day on you tube. It's fantastic. I burst out laughing too when I first heard when you leave. Typical sparks humour at its best.

Great sales pitch, Larry! You're coy about the length of this CD and to rephrase you, "This album will grow on you..." I will buy this album tomorrow as the Bricks and Sticks store I buy my CDs from had not taken delivery because the UPS driver had not shown up yet. Again thank you for "re-Sparking" my interest in Sparks. Being retired and on a limited budget, I cannot afford tickets to the AEG-Keswick Glenside, Philadelphia area show, plus they're about to sell out the 1300-seat house.

I really enjoyed the latter part of the album. Gee, That Was Fun made me cry😢I feel like some songs were made for Annette musical… or it sounds like it.

half the songs missed the mark for me when i listened to it for the first time but you’re absolutely correct when you say after a couple listens it grows on you. i still can’t get behind a love story, it’s pretty repetitive and really doesn’t go anywhere new melodically. the first 30 seconds aren’t that different than the last 30 seconds, and while that same critique can be made towards other songs in the album like when you leave and veronica lake those more than make up for it with their vocals and lyrics. the vocal style of a love story just doesn’t click with me and i don’t think the lyrics aren’t up to par with the rest of the album. it’s not a bad song by any means, it’s just my least favorite by a pretty big margin.

You know what they say about hype stickers: nothing is as good as they say they are...

Didn't have time to listen to the whole album yet, just listened to some samples but had to listen to "It doesn'have to be that way" in full. Seems to be one of the stand out tracks.

Agree that this album seems to have more fluency than Drip drip drip and Hippopotamus. Not sure yet if that makes it better, but it might. My stand out tracks are We go dancing, Take me for a ride and, especially, the heavenly, gorgeous and moving It doesn't have to be that way.

I went through the album with the lyrics sheet, brilliant. The girl is crying in her latte, is nearly as humorous as Suburban Homeboys or Aeroflot.

I couldn't agree more about "When You Leave", I also laughed out loud. After 4 listens so far I think "You Were Meant For Me" is my favorite. The first time I heard it I thought it was weird but the second time I started to reply enjoy it and now I love it.

I recently have been reflecting on this band called Sparks. Just a take from a "way back then" fan. I literally "stumbled" on Sparks. Not much radio play, not much tv airings, and back then no internet RU-vid and etc. I had never heard of them It was a typical Saturday at the mall in Texas, Usa, circa 1974.I took my chance on a *album* cover Propaganda. The sight of these two guys being kidnapped bound and gagged and being quickly transported in a boat made me stop and scratch my head..And triggered my imagination. I was at a friend's house for that weekend and I played it at her house...Instant like deluxe for me ! Her cat... not so much... it arched its back hissed at the record player and scratched me. Then ran off ! LOL ! Welcome to the world of Sparks I thought. I continued liking them over these 50+ years But being in Texas still...nothing.Even as the internet became popular. It was scarce finding Sparks... So it for me has been low keyed with these guys, And living where I do and not driving.No chance of them appearing in concert and me being able *to drive* at least 100 miles to see them.. I had some chances but I either got sick or fickle Texas weather would strike. And fast forward it to now, The Sparks Brothers Documentary, Annette and "Steady Drip" and now this new cd seems to of suddenly re- launched Sparks.To us old fans it has made us sort of scratch our heads and think..really??? but are so happy it has. And after a 50 year wait I will finally be seeing Sparks in Dallas July 12. Without me driving, and where I live Sparks still evoke a "who are they" remark, well I am surprised I am going.. that in itself is another weird story.. But so happy and very excited !! TY this I know is long But it had to come out LOL !!

That is a great description, that this album has a flow to it. They went for a consistent quality production style which makes the album feel more cohesive than most of their recent albums, however, I don't like the songs on this one as much as their last two, especially Hippopotamus. A friend of mine who I introduced Sparks to tends to enjoy their Euro / techno phase around the 90's (her favorite album is Balls) so it's no surprise that she considers this their best album in years. I think it's still too early for me to tell how I'd rate it. I didn't think A Steady Drip Drip Drip was top tier Sparks at first, but three years later that one would easily crack my top 5.

I can see in my crystal ball Nothing Is As good as They say . It is to be their next number one.

I really enjoyed this album! When You Leave is my favorite track too, very funny XD. I loved seeing them at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and I’m so excited to see them again at the Hollywood Bowl!!

Love Sparks, sadly I've not been lucky enough to see them. Really have to hear this.

All in all, a great listen. Half the songs are right up there with their best: The Girl is Crying in Her Latte, Mona Lisa, You Were Meant for Me, We Go Dancing, A Love Story, It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way & especially Take Me for a Ride because it describes my evil sister Laura PERFECTLY!!!

An individual this incredible would absolutely love this album and find the last 2 so so.

I’ve always liked Sparks but ever since L’il Beethoven on up to today’s album have all been excellent. It’s funny to think that these 21st century albums would be produced by a couple of quirky brothers in their 70’s. Long live Sparks! 🤘😳🤘

I wouldn't have placed the hype sticker on the cover. I always cut them out of the plastic and store them till i decide to place them into a photo album book. And it comes with a cd...LOL! They're very unique, just like me...LOL!

I've been following the SPARKS for 50 years now, owning their albums, their singles. They had their weakest phase in the 80s, then they got better and better. Unfortunately, their current album is only mediocre and rather follows their weak period of the 80s. They are not really bad, but the magic is missing, they sound somehow uninspired, the songs somehow drag through time. When I see the series with the Sparks LPs in the shelf in front of me, other albums by them are more likely to be re-spinned than this one.

Hey i know this is irrelevant but i know you’ve been getting into neil young recently and i just wanted to let you know that i started listening to all of his albums. My favorite so far is Everybody Knows This os Nowhere.

The best album since Exotic creatures in my opinion.

Sorry, Sparks fans of which l am a big one. And Canadian Studmuffin! This to me sounds like their weakest in the 2000's. Melodies mostly lack, and the music lacks usual Sparks creative arranging. It sounds more like a Ron and Russell project with keyboards and synth sounds thrown in, and no band sound, which l really miss. It sounds robotic with most melodies understated, and Russell sounds uninspired to me. I think Hippopotamus and Steady Drip was prime Sparks. I will always love Sparks, and being creative in their 70's is absolutely amazing. And lyrical content is still good on this album...l know we expect a lot from Sparks, but l just don't feel the Sparks genius on most of these songs.😧

Glad you are liking the album so much, i am enjoying it too but maybe not as much. Escalator, The mona Lisa's packing, Veronica lake and take me for a ride are my favourites initially. Could do without a love story and it doesn't have to be that way. Think I'd enjoy the album more then as it just drags a bit towards the end for me. Overall though lots of great songs and I'm not disappointed 😄

I've loved Sparks on and off forever, but I definitely haven't loved every album. I'm not keen on this one. It seems very formulaic and somehow robotic. I probably just haven't listened to it enough.

I thought this album was really great, I would rate it 8.5/10! I really enjoyed your review for this album, my top 3 songs are: Honourable mention - It’s Sunny Today 3 - Nothing Is A Good As They It Is 2 - Gee, That Was Fun 1 - Not That Well-Defined
