I am no longer affiliated with this gym. For those who are interested in visiting me while im in NYC, you can find me at Glory Martial Arts Centre in Bay Ridge!
Would you be open to giving some insight as to why you left the gym? I was considering joining but after seeing your comments, I’m not so sure. Was it an amicable split? Even just a yes/no answer would be massively appreciated. Thanks as always for what you do to inspire and inform!
the instructor has obviously fought in boxing and well versed in it, and sharp for his age ! this exchange was a feast to the eyes, like art in motion, with respectful demeanor, thanks Jeff
@@1individeo right, but i guarantee u there is a way higher percentage of boxers and kickboxers that spar that kung fu or jeet bun do people or any weirdo mcdojo this guy is the exception and rare to find so he is correct
@@SirPraiseSun at the end it is about how you train, not what you train. Anderson Silva made all that stuff that "don't work in real life" work in MMA. MCdojos are not styles, MCdojos are some gyms or senseis/masters
This is a perfect example of flow sparring, wish everyone sparred like this (especially if you do not intend to compete.) On a side note this instructor has great reaction speed considering he looks like he might be in his 40's I'm just guesstimating, one can only imagine how fast he was in his 20's.
I wish people in my gym got the memo of flow sparring lol, ive been training for like 6 months and the other day a black belt headkicked me clean 3x in a row, still hurts to chew on things lol
dude is propably 40 not more, it isn't old enough to lose speed drastically, im 35 now and never was quicker before and I don't see any reason why I should lose a lot of speed in next 5 years
I really enjoy that you explore JKD more. I feel like its becoming more to the public eye other than we know it's developed by Bruce Lee himself and you seem to be one of the ones to bringing it more to the limelight and it's practicality. Plus props to the jkd instructor. He's so experienced and it really shows. I really wanna learn from him.
Damn. This is excellent sparring footage, would loved to see kicks incorporated. Crazy feinting, distance management, head movement and swicth hittin from both yall. Love it.
happy new year jeff!! hoping you have a good 2023. loved seeing this video uncut, it’s great as you say for learning about how to gauge, enter, and exit!
Looked good Jeff. Your follow-ups were in numbers and your counter cross or hook options were timed well. Your instructor is very slippery and skillful. You're lucky to have each other to work with. Your switching and framing looked good too just throw more body shots, he had you there a couple of times. You guys are next level sparring for sure. 👊😎
Did you guys know there's a video where Georges St-Pierre mentioned in MMA he used several techniques and concepts he learned from studying Bruce Lee? The video is "GSP explains how Karate and Bruce Lee help his wrestling". In another clip Georges said he is actually left handed and fought powerside forward; he said he considered that his "secret weapon". As a Bruce Lee and jkd/mma fan, it made my day finding those clips!
The JKD instructor looked very chilled and experienced to me. He was very controlled, though you seemed to have upped the ante a bit at the end. Thanks for posting it until the end.
I really like this one. That Jeet Kune Do instructor got some good boxing skills, head movement, footwork, guard always up and punching combos. But the fake throws and side open palm (hand) block that's Jeet Kune Do. Just like Bruce Lee said "Use what you need" and that's what that bro did. Thank you Jeff for a great sparring video. 👏👏👏👏
Jeff Sharp like always. The jkd instructor have great Sense of distance Control , look How he always make little adjust in footwork, he use some jkd principles like crossarm guard( the most usefull way to application of destruction tecniques of filipino martial arts, but in Boxing way) , and a little bit of trapping hands when he move he's arm close the guard of Jeff, wonderfull job Man.
you looked fast jeff, loved the switch stance combos. curious, would you have found it more difficult to fight that southpaw if he was throwing more lead hooks and/or him circling/slipping to YOUR left?
? Curious.. what size space is his dojo/school? I've noticed particularly in NYC many places seem pretty small and limited area to have many students or training? I assume overhead cost is very high in that area/city to be able to have a larger space. Great videos as always.
That was awesome to watch Jeff! You both have the SKILLS. I noticed James worked a ton of bobs and weaves, especially towards your rear hand side. Did you find it difficult to hit or reach his head when James did that? Or do you use another tactic for that type of defense? You did perform weaves, but it looks like you use slipping more often. Plus your counter punching is ridiculous. Is slipping your go to D and why if you don’t mind me asking?
Considering that JKD is a philosophy, not a martial art, there would be no one movement or technique or style that applies to all JKD practitioners, since every JKD practitioner would use what works for them and discard what doesn't from a variety of martial arts.
JKD stance is almost identical to Philly shell. The main difference is the lead hand is the power hand and is the main weapon and the rear hand is mostly for defense with occasional crosses and tight hooks in the pocket. JKD focused on intercepting which is a higher level of countering, hence the absolute nececity of reading the opponent for timing, precision and speed.
Looks like a lot of pure boxing technique, the bases of all Western striking. Which is a very good thing ti learn. Evryone should learn to box, to start. Hey, whats the number 1 rule of Zombieland? Cardio. Who wins any fight. The guy running away the fastest always wins.
@@batmanonholiday4477 it looks like that because there using sport rules you cant really see real jeet kune with out them both getting fucked up its like dry land swimming but still good to work on your clean techniques
It’s a long shot but it would be fun to see Jeff fight on one of those influencer boxing cards against someone like a Faze Sensei or something. Jeff is just solid overall with his boxing and has improved leaps and bounds and it would be fun to see him showcase it.
He can move really fast for his age. Guddos for the guy! Also fun to see moves on sparring that are not used by most trained boxers, kickboxers. Like a lot of front hand faints. Also how he protects his front side via raising elbow to deflect any jab, hides his face behind the shoulder, also the movement after that said deflect, arcs away reallly well with body movement for any following power shots. Its not exactly the same, but seems very similar to Mayweather defense.
as someone who formerly trained in jkd , who now primarily focuses on Boxing I wonder how effective the strikes are compared to someone who boxes I know the fighting styles are completely different but something that I am observing is that punches being throw look like they leave the striker way to open for a counter punch compared to a boxer
( My suggestion is you spar guys from Jaquin Marcello, Tommy Carruthers, or Marx or Paul Daly, I got hit by one of them through a full face shield and it was a shellshock-blow. See the difference in their movements. )
Nice sparing. Although I have to notice that sifu has Roy Jones (hands down) style that costs him a lot, he would do much better if he would reduce it especially in shorter distances.
Crazy i knie Jimmy from back in the day to see him on your channel is surreal if you want you should check out slick slugger boxing also fantastic trainer/coach /boxer
