I actually think that John Leguizamos performance is easily the only good thing in the movie. Sure, his dialogue is as bad as the rest of the films is, but his take on the character is dynamic and interesting. With a better script and better direction, he nails it.

Been a very long time since I've read the comics, but clown was purposefully annoying. He was pissed Malebolgia chose Spawn to lead his army and was trying to goad him into a fight. When Spawn is first created he doesn't realize his full potential so he's vulnerable to getting taken out by Clown/Violator. Violator understands that Spawn will become stronger than him as Spawn realizes his full potential so tries to antagonize the hell outta him with the most offensive stuff he can come up with which was usually wife/sex joke related. He is unable to outright kill Spawn from the jump because that would really piss off his boss, the devil/Malebolgia. All that in mind, I felt Leguizamo got the job done.

I have actually started reading the comics recently, and weirdly enough Clown is somehow less annoying in the comics. Sure he's purposefully written to be annoying to Spawn but in the comic he's actually somewhat tolerable (and sometimes even actually funny), even in his spinoff he got immediately after his first introduction.

The special effects are even wilder if you look into what the director did before this movie. He was a special effects guy who worked on The Abyss, Die Hard, T2, Jurassic park, Back to The Future 2 and a bunch of other big movies. Pretty much was involved in a lot of the best early CG in Hollywood.

True, but the movie was semi close to source material, clown/violator as annoying as he was, was spot on early spawn comics, it was a dark comic book movie in a time that non batman/,Superman films were bad. Special effects for the time was good outside of hell, which was good enough. The film made money especially on DVD, this was considered one of the better comic book movies at the time.

Michael Jai White is on record saying that studio interference and the director constantly changing things for no reason was the downfall of this movie. Apparently the original cut was R rated and was even closer to his comic counterpart.

I was a kid when Spawn came out and I generally enjoyed it. It was faithful to the material so I wasn't to suprised about what it was doing. Only today do the effects look super dated..it was passable then. It's a cult classic IMO.

Another problem with trying to figure out the story for Spawn in the comic book was it tied into Rob Liefeld's Chapel. Important story points that would explain stuff in Spawn would be in some random Youngblood issue. lol

This felt like John L. Carried this movie much like Jim carrey did Batman Forever or Raul Julia did Street Fighter. They put their heart into it and it shows they were enjoying the part to the fullest. M.J.W. is a good actor, still going but shame he never got another lead like this, could have seen him as so many roles.

I can relate to Martin so much with Spawn and the fandom. For those who now argue about how the movie was not a "faithful" adaptation of the comic, My school classmates who read Spawn saw it and LOVE it enough that they were quoting the Violator's jokes and wanted the class to show it as a treat for Halloween. Just being Spawn in live action was enough to be "good" for them. So yeah I remember the hype for this and I roll my eyes when fans wanna argue that the comics where more "serious". Even that HBO animated series was just praised for not having the campiness and being more "adult" when on rewatch it's just boring (Spawn barely fights crime) and pales in comparison to more well made shows like the Batman animated series.

Eh. I like both, and I saw the movie first (still have the DVD and burnt Spawn action figure). It's a shitty movie, but still entertaining. The animated series is more character driven (and follows the comics) whereas the movie is more action oriented. STAS pulls you into the world and the mind of Al in ways that the movie didn't capture. I absolutely loved the first episode because it set the tone by depicting him as a force of nature against evil, something to be feared but also respected, a flawed hero with clear vulnerabilities. The movie was like a Hollywood interpretation. I'm still waiting on the reboot which will likely never happen.

_I remember My Dad, My Mom, My little Sister & I went to Universal Studios Hollywood/City Walk to see this movie when it 1st came out, I was 8yrs old & my DAD(R.I.P~July 3, 1963-March 5,2021) is the reason why we went to go see this movie, & I can honestly say that my DAD & I were extremely disappointed with this movie, My DAD had a, “Well,….. what is this bullshit that I payed for US to come see”, face on through this entire movie_ _The CGI Hell scene_ 🤦🏾‍♂️ _My DAD threw his hands up at that part & said “I’m going to the damn bathroom”{loud as hell inside that packed theater}_ _I laughed so hard(my dad had a few beers before we went to the movies) so his untamed frustration for this movie was heightened to the levels of comedy perfectly parallel to Cousin Eddie from National Lampoon type of funny_

It’s weird that in the 90s, comic artists were guests in talk shows or were in commercials for jeans. They had T-shirts, trading cards and action figures made of their characters and they didn’t need a film adaptation to get that attention. That doesn’t really happen with new artists these days.

In the party crash scene there was actually an Easter egg that was supposed to lead to a sequel. Yeah they…really thought this was going to get a sequel. There’s a character named Angela who was at the party. She’s the redhead that’s in a dress that makes her look like a green power ranger. For those that don’t know, she’s a warrior and enemy of all Spawn. She actually has earrings that are made from Spawn’s that she killed.

Damn man I loved Spawn but then again I loved Street Fighter with Van Damme as well lol but Spawn back in 97 was amazing for it's time I saw it in the theater and was blown away by the special effects
