What is loneliness?
Photographer Bill Wadman and I talk about our perception of being alone, and consider whether loneliness is living within each of us always. There may be separation in the loneliness we feel, as much as being alone is immeasurable. Yet, often we find that loneliness is shared. We speak to a quote from 'Commentaries on Living', in which Krishnamurti observes the nature of alone as 'that which is pliable and so enduring', and wonder if our action of being alone makes it actually lonely.
We look together at the paintings of Edvard Munch, Edward Hopper, and Marc Chagall, questioning whether loneliness can only ever be experienced by the individual, or whether it can also be collective. We ask if art brings the innate loneliness of the artist into being, externalised and expressed for the world to see.
