At the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, the current exhibition gathers twelve large canvasses by contemporary abstract painter, Anthony Daley. Titled 'Son of Rubens' we might assume that the exhibition demonstrates how Daley's work fashions itself on the Baroque master; yet, on inspection we find images of vivid colour and abstract forms, seemingly disconnected from 17th century painting. Yet, we are observing Daley's reverence in meditation on Rubens as an influence, rather than visiting a parody. Ever After prompts photographer Bill Wadman and I to question how source informs outcome, and whether our complacent views on influence give truthful credence to those things that shape us as artists.
With many thanks to Bill for his ongoing support for the Speaking of Seeing project.
