This week, Bill and I explore our ideas about knowledge and knowing. We question the relationship between past and present when navigating our awareness of the known, and ask whether what we know is received or innate. We consider the work of Joseph Beuys, taking into account his credo that any man is an artist and that art is experience and not reliant (necessarily) on the known. We also look at the Guggenheim-commissioned "Can't Help Myself' by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, wondering if the robotic arm is somehow knowledgeable, known, or disconnected from human experience (at times conflated with knowledge and being). Actually, I question what the differences are between these phenomena...
With many thanks to Bill for his ongoing support for the Speaking of Seeing project.
