Are we aware that we rush forward to meet our future selves? Do we ask whether we leave a legacy, and what legacy really means? Is our goal to be remembered?
Photographer Bill Wadman and I question how our lives create legacy and deny it, through our ability to record action but not necessarily perception. We wonder about Sisyphus, and the notion that we are destined to continually push a boulder up a hill, yet believe our acts to have value. We take a view on The Kiss at the Hotel de Ville by Robert Doisneau, thinking about the legacy of sadness in an iconic image, leaving the photographer with an abiding heartache. We try not to look away from Christ's entry into Journalism by Kara Walker, reflecting on the legacy of the individual and that of the mass.
We wonder, what will we leave behind when there is nothing left of us?
With thanks to Bill for his ongoing support for the Speaking of Seeing project.
