Some IEP directors try to turn everything against the family instead of taking responsibility. It happened to us however I didn't allow them to turn the tables and focused on my child's needs.

Hi Thanks for the Wonderful info and Real Stories about IEP . God sent you for us this training . It's exactly the District did to me... Special Education Director gave me the empathy and promise to help me after a disagreement because they decided to exit my son out of Special Education. 2 days later, District Filed Process Hearing after I requested an IEE. It's scheduled for the Hearing in September , 2022. They have District Lawyer but I Can't afford to pay for hiring our own Lawyer for my case. Please help! I live in Washington state now but moved out California last year. My son is Autistic with high functioning. We appreciated your support and info.

I didn't know anything of this. My IEP meeting was always the same. I needed a handicap accessible vehicle and they have no idea about grants always an excuses. So all I received was retaliation. Our special education director is married to the Section 504 complaint department and then I cant his records.

At 28:01 she said the school/district can deny an assessment/ evaluation. I think she meant they 'will' and sometimes 'do' deny assessments/evaluations. According to IDEA and the appending regulations the school/district is obligated to evaluate the child. If they deny there are regulations that prescribe what the district must do in the event the evaluation was denied. And in the case she referred to if the child is found eligible, even after the fact, the school is culpable for all of the services the child was not provided during the time in question and maybe even further back. In the case where she spoke about the expulsion the family could file a due process and ask the that the child stay put pending the outcome of the hearing. § 300.111 Child find. (a)General. (1) The State must have in effect policies and procedures to ensure that - (i) All children with disabilities residing in the State, including children with disabilities who are homeless children or are wards of the State, and children with disabilities attending private schools, regardless of the severity of their disability, and who are in need of special education and related services, are identified, located, and evaluated; and (ii) A practical method is developed and implemented to determine which children are currently receiving needed special education and related services.

The precursor to this video is one that provides proactive tips on strengthening the communication between the case manager and the parent from the inception of the student's indoctrination. For example, setting time each week to discuss (text, email, virtual or in person) for even a few minutes, the alignment of progress and observations at home vs. in school. Ideally, none of the above solutions should be required any time prior to a meeting if the guardian/parent and the case manager are consistently communicating.

I agree. One of the most aspect of our journey as parents of children with special needs is that we know so little when they are young and learn so much by trial and error versus the experience we have later on. If only I knew then what I know now.

I was received foster care benefits/non-related guardian, African American on free lunch because he was on Medicaid (Temecula, CA). When he was 17 District tested him at 2nd grade reading level. I took him into my home because he was abandoned by his parents and I want to break the cycle of poverty, close the achivement gap and to to college. I hired an attorney, District used their highest paid attorney to fight, not support reading remediation for 1.5 years. District spent more money paying private law firms than what I requested for reading remediation (Barton). District denied reading remediation, saying he was college/career ready. I would have gone to due process, but he left my house. The cycle of poverty will continue to him. My advocacy is to expose the use of private law firms paid by public funds that fight, not support reading remediation. Low income families can't afford an advocate or attorney. The State of CA, EdTrust.org (Bill Gates), NAACP is focusing on closing the achievement gap in low income and African American students. These organizations do not know that and need to know that private law firms paid tax payers are profiting from students with dyslexia/reading struggles. There is a lot of inequity and low income (unduplicated count) students will not be able to close the achievement gap and be college/career ready as long as law firms are profiting and fighting reading remediation. Then there is the topic of confidential settlement agreements "hush agreements" Temeculadyslexia@gmail.com Until Everyone Can Read. More Teacher, Less Lawyers (Special Education)

Bottom line, from the inside. Don't think the school district is your friend. Treat them like an insurance agent. The "budget" argument is bogus. They are spending millions on BS consultant programs for their consultant friends. Every honest teacher who has been suffering years of bogus "professional development" "training" knows this. It is a matter of priorities.

1. Never take advice from anyone working in/for any school district. 2. It should be illegal to be the director of a special education department and the director of your local SELPA (total conflict of interest)
@SpecialNeedsAcademy
@SpecialNeedsAcademy 3 года назад
I can understand your concern about the conflict of interests for sure yet what would happen when you have a single district SELPA? There are a few of these in California. Just curious what your thoughts would be. Sorry about the delayed response. I didn't know how RU-vid really works at that time

So I had had a meeting a while ago with the school about my little guy Tatum who is 3 about his IEP for when he starts special education Pre-k this year for everything that I wanted to say an put in his IEP well at that time they said everything looks good that they will review everything an if they have any concerns they would let me know well I receive a letter from the school an then this letter they tried to sound nice but it was there a roundabout way of saying what Tatum can't have and what they're not going to do for Tatum an let me tell you I'm pissed Tatum has level 3 autism an developmentally he is at 1 1/2 years old an he has learning disabilities an is nonverbal an wears glasses he's always a ver happy little boy but in the letter they stated no outside toys well Tatum has his Mickey Mouse that he has with him everyday all day no matter what he's doing his Mickey Mouse is always right there with him his Mickey Mouse is such a part of him that he is developmentally 1 1/2 years old an that the last time he didn't have his Mickey Mouse with him it caused him to get so overstimulated an so overwhelmed that he started self harming banging his head an ended up with a large cut an a bruise on his forehead and if I had to choose between Tatum having his an if I had to choose between Tatum having his Mickey Mouse at all times or him self harming you damn well better believe I would choose his Mickey in a heartbeat an it's not even a question of if he has is Mickey Mouse or not or why he has it also the school stated that they don't allow any outside drinks well this made me furious also because Tatum likes his flavored water in sippy an in his IEP I wrote that Tatum should be allowed to have his flavored water at any time and mind you this wasn't coming from the teacher this was coming from the district itself an also in the letter they wanted to know what I was doing to reduce Tatum's stimming Tatum stems by flapping his hands bouncing up an down an giggling an sometimes squealing he does this out of happiness an excitement they say this because they say it could be a distraction to the other children I know I could get a lawyer for this but I'm just going to look for another school who actually care for my little guy they said some other things in this letter that right now has got me to pissed thinking about it

50:58 "They will be lying straight to your face and you don't even know it." Hmm. This video shows that the business this woman is promoting is not informed nor updated on the laws that exist that promote advocacy and the partnership between the students, parents and district. In most cases, the strongest advocates for your children, besides the parents and the children themselves, are hired by the district. Additionally, this woman has not once spoken about the importance of the transition planning and transition assessments that should be evident in all IEPs to empower and improve students' knowledge in the areas of self-awareness and self-advocacy. These transition assessments provide the information about students' preferences, interests and strengths, which should become the framework for the entire IEP. Without these transition assessments in place, even at the elementary levels, a crucial thread of information is missing that is essential for preparing students for college, career-readiness and the real world. Thumbs down, for sure.

New parents or those new to this information. This woman is overly negative and bitter. Not all district/schools are like what she presents by any stretch of the imagination. Being a teacher in this field for 13+ years, there is some good information here but please don't assume that the people who are trying to serve your child are pulling a one over on you, which is basically what she is suggesting here. Most people who get into special ed care about kids deeply, but it is very difficult to always meet every little legal demand with the lack of funds available in public education. Please get aggro at your politicians before teachers and administration. Our job goes far beyond teaching and asks us to be administrators, psychologists, therapists, case managers, and so many other things not required of regular teachers. The one point I will say brought up by the interviewer is trying to get the paraprofessionals who actually do a LOT of the work in some classrooms to be at the meeting. It is crazy that this is not a common practice. There is a wide skill level in sped and high turnover, so yes there are some horror cases I've seen as well, but try and be a human and don't blame the school or teachers for your entire situation or if they can't provide all the solutions you are looking for. We are all doing what we can with the hands we've been dealt. Peace.

I would agree that a large majority of educators and others that work with our children do so with a strong desire to be helpful and that they care deeply about the kids they serve, however, it is also true that there are some districts and administrators where this is exactly as Martina described. Thank you for your comment and it appears as though you are in the large majority and I say than k you for your valued service.
@CoCo-eu1hg
@CoCo-eu1hg 3 года назад
Yes, I would agree. She does give helpful information but teachers are not trying to get one over on you. I am a first year special education teacher and I really try to communicate with my parents all the time on how students are doing and work collaboratively with the parent on the students goals. I don't like that she had a lot of negatives about teachers. We have a hard job, and really try to do everything possible to help the students in our care. I take my job very seriously and am always willing to work with the parents. It's their child, and we want that student to make goals, milestones and achieve success.
@vanessawortham3002
@vanessawortham3002 Год назад
Armani you should not take offense to what this Martina is saying. If you are a good teacher then she is not talking to you. But this is information that many partners need to know. I live in Florida and the school district where my granddaughter goes to school the teachers are not updated with the issues that some of the students have. And the principal is not very helpful at all. When my grandson was in school he had one teacher that could calm him down, she was very helpful but that was over 10 years old. (Ohio). After I moved to Florida I was unable to help my granddaughter. They moved to Florida about two years ago. They placed her in a school for kids with behavioral problems. My daughter is a nurse and while she is traveling I care for my granddaughter. There is No discipline in those schools. Kids throwing chairs and grabbing girls butts and breast and all they would say is there is not much we can do about. I got her out of that school. Now that she is in a regular public school it is not too much better. She has not had a full evaluation since she was in the third grade. After I requested her records see she did not have an effective plan. And as Martina said because she can do her school work they don't know how or don't want to address the behavior issues. It's sad so it's best to know your rights because that is your responsibility and they will not tell you your child's needs. And yes they will to you so be on guard.
