I started playing this game my senior year of high school, as my AP class was reading heart of darkness. I ultimately was the only person to read through the book, mostly because I wanted to see the parallels between it, the game, and the movie Apocalypse now. This game, and everything related to the game, was the topic of my college essay and ultimately lead me to a get into college. For that, I thank the developers.

Baraon Gallegos Wow, I had a similar thing with it :3 I used the game and the Book for my essay in graphic and web design. At first my teacher didn't get why I would choose a Shooter game for the topic I took. The topic was "Overlay Worlds" and I made a presentation with drawn graphics and a Web-Video overlaying Art Style Scenarios of the Book compared to the Video Game :3 A++ for the project and my Teacher took it as example for the Next Generation Classes :D

Spec Ops was more horror than shooter. Its sloppier combat and cover system added terror to combat and made you feel like a human, not a bullet sponge. Its main character started as a cliche but ended with every level of humanity peeled away by his surroundings until only a monster remained. The problems add to the atmosphere, giving this sense of wrongness (yes, that's a word) that reminded me of Apocalypse Now. Unlike that movie, however, it was far worse in Spec Ops because you controlled the bombed out wreck of a human being as he fought for survival against the human heart at its darkest, making impossible choices that only hurt you and everyone around you in the long run only to find madness waiting at the end. That is far more terrifying than any slobbering monster Resident Evil or Silent Hill can churn out in their myriad sequels, and far more realistic than any Modern Warfare set piece.

Pretty much it. It's already after Willie Pete scene where any sensible player should realise 33rd are the closest to beign the good guys here. But Walker refuses to admit it, and rationalize to push further, creates himself imaginary friend to guide him, even goes along with Riggs plan, despite knowing what he's up to, just to prove he's not the villian here. It's clear he's losing it, note how in late game he no longer mantains trigger discipline, during combat he curses, screams and even cheers killed enemies ("Heavy is fuckin' down!"). Not to mention devs clearly mess with player. Most notably one is when you get killed in late-game, there's chance instead of loading screen you see Walker where he was before combat started, just shaking his head and saying "what the fuck..." as it was all just hallucination.

I hadn't heard of this game before, so this video grabbed my interest (I haven't any spoilers). I just played it and HOLY FUCK, THAT GAME IS INCREDIBLE!!! I'm not the type of person who gets too emotional with the characters and story of a game (particularly with shooters), but after I finished it, I couldn't rest the whole night. This game is the DEFINITION of a deconstruction of it's genre. It takes all the tropes of it's genre and applies it to a real world and everything just flips. It's like Madoka Magicka (for you anime fans) in that it takes matches all your expectations and then when certain things happen you realize what this isn't, everything you expect. When you walk up and hear just regular American soldiers talking about their families back home before you have to go shoot them just...... wow. God damn.

+Joe Jacques For what it's worth, Roger Ebert was doing his thing when video games had all the emotive capacity of a wrist-watch, so that's probably how he continued to see them. Add to that, being the 'thumbs-down' guy was kindof his shtick, anyway, so we may never know if that's how he really felt, or not.

"So here's Thought for the Day for you: is a shooter game about the horrors of war an inherently hypocritical thing? Can a game's plot really take the stance that the hideous things man does to his fellow man is beyond hollow guilt-filled rationalization when with its very next breath it goes "bing!" and gives us the Emotionally Dead achievement? Does it inherently cheapen the message to coincide it with exciting shooty action? Could a video game reasonably make us feel guilty for things it told us to do? Can a video game use shooty gameplay to induce emotions other than visceral joy, or will the intended message inevitably be overlooked by an audience who will probably just be tryin' to have fun shooting things? Sorry, is this getting too contemplative early on? Here are some farting noises: *pffffffffffft* *pffffffffffft* " - Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw Zero Punctuation

As a vet with some actual PTSD going on, I knew I probably wasn't up to buying and playing the whole thing, so I watched a walk-through (well, about half a walk-through). The guy doing the walk-through was clearly enjoying the game, and in a good mood, but his jokes, and off-hand commentary along-side the game-play became more unsettling, in a way, than the game it's self. It probably doesn't exist, but does anyone know of a let's player with a more-or-less un-jaded, and less cavalier demeanor on this sort of thing?

It'd be nice if telltale would make a modern war game, but with real interactions. Such as talking to your fellow soldiers, and making friends with civilians. A war game with choice, Telltales TWD mixed with battlefield would be so nice, you wouldn't just effect the war with "Shoot that guy" You could be d*cks to your fellow soldiers and they would reflect that in the heat of battle, such as not healing you when you asked for it, or not listening to your commands.

And a lot of the choices become more tragic because you know they’re choices and you know that the choices end up out of your favor. You know that you’re going to fail to make the right choice because there is so right choice. It’s amazing.

we need more games like this: not exactly like Spec Ops: The Line, but something that turns expectations completely on their head. I know about the plot point of the game, even though I never played it, and when I saw it, I was frightened. normally I joke about touchy subjects in order to express the ridiculousness of it still existing as something that still serves to divide, but holy shit! I was sick to my stomach! I had to immediately play GTA or Mortal Kombat and get a good laugh out of the over the top chaos I'd caused or satisfaction out of the really hard fatalities I'd just performed. It's not a horror game, but the fact that Spec Ops The Line has elements tear your heart clean out of your chest and throw it back at you (talk about a heart attack!) it feels like it should be a horror game

Even what this video says -- despite not containing anything specifically spoilery -- is too spoilery! The main reason this game is so fantastic is the slow realization of what it's really about. If you go in KNOWING there's something different about it (as I did) it just doesn't affect you the same way (as it didn't for me). Please, stick an annotation on this thing saying that the viewer really REALLY should play it without listening to this video.

According to the dictionary, deconstruction is "the analytic examination of something (as a theory) often in order to reveal its inadequacy". Pretty close to what TVtropes uses. I would like more games like this that explicitly tell you that war is NOT to be over-glorified. This game has a strong, STRONG message about how much trauma can result from battle and just how dangerous the implementations of over-glorification are, often deluding judgments about the real thing. If Call of Duty got you to join the military, you're in it for the wrong reasons, and should get out post-haste. That's a very powerful message, and I hope more games do this. Hats off to you, Yager!

I have not played the game so take everything I say with a grain of salt, but on the surface it seems to me that making the first hour or so of the game a poor call of duty rip off shooter type thing as you described here might actually have turned some players off during that time before they got to see what kind of a game it really is. Particularly short attention span steam players that have dozens of games they could play instead.

I don't know if you're seeing more than existed because you loved it so much or seeing what really happened because you're much more of an FPS shooter than I am (plus the industry connections) but I thought Spec Ops was (just) solid. A few annoying flaws in the mechanics and sometimes I got a very JRPG (hah) feeling of 'puppeteering the story' rather than exploring it myself due to the linearity and main character making very different choices than I would but, it was solid. I thought the dialogue was good, the creepy insanity moments were great and the ending fantastic. It was a good, functional game with a good story. It wasn't some kind of oh-mah-gawd-how-did-they-convince-people-to-make-this icon of mind-blowing awesome. Then again, I don't tend to play CoD or MW. Maybe if I were more of an FPSer the combination of shooter and mild mind-fuckery-good-story would have impressed me more... if that's all the difference there is...?

I agree with you- and I do tend to atleast play most shooters trying to stretch out of the norm. Spec Ops' story was very Silent Hill-esque but badly done, by that I do not mean it was bad. It was alright- the gameplay sucked very badly tho.

Ali Agreed about the gameplay part, though I guess that was how they wanted to force you to get out of the game. Then again, when Konrad says the most spoilerly line at the end, he kinda refers to the gameplay as well. "But on you marched, and for what?" I'm guessing this kinda refers to the gameplay. The clunky, bad-ish gameplay that makes it harder to play through the game, harder for most who aren't used to shooters and, maybe, even some people who play lots of shooters. "You're here because you wanted to feel like something you're not. A hero." As a player, you played the game wanting to become the hero, marching through the mechanical disadvantages and all that jazz, only to be rewarded with a kick to the stomach.

I see what you're saying, but I disagree completely. If I raise a comparison to a book for a second- a book is never badly written to make a point. Characters are sometimes given a first person line of dialogue which can include accents/their lack of english/etc to have a unique touch to that line of text- However, reading a line of dialogue written with a unique flare is completely different to the way in which a whole video game can feel like a pain to play. I'd argue the game would feel more immersive if it was smooth to play- heck I dont even think its about immersion to some degree, the level design and enemies were bland too. I know there are examples like Silent Hill in which the character is hard to control- and that adds tension to the game. But in Spec Ops' case- since its supposed to be a game of full murdering and the thoughtlessness behind it (till the end)- maybe a smooth gameplay design in which I can kill people and have more fun would have actually lent to the story too. Just my two paragraph cents, thanks for giving me a decent conversation on youtube ('tis a rare and beautiful thing)
@dannylamb456

Ali Indeed. Still, the whole bad gameplay point stands somewhat, but the book example knocks it flat. Maybe if the mechanics of the game were the 'clunky' GOW-style of fun then maybe they would have a solid point there too. Nevertheless, it's a nice breath of fresh air from all the other shooters that paint you as the hero and always the hero, never wrong in any decision with perfect gameplay to make you feel like a hero. Then again, they did it well in SH, maybe a sort of tweaking could have been done to improve Spec Ops? I dunno for sure but thank you too.

***** definitely agree on that- was a breath of fresh air as the story starts developing. I think the dev's should get a sequel or it'd be a crime!!! they could definitely do so much good man..... SOOOOO MUCHHHHHHHHHHH

Deconstruction is best broadly put as the study of choices; it looks at the particular devices used and examines what effect they have. To deconstruct, say, Call of Duty, would require you examine the context in which it was created, the purpose of the mechanics, the hardware and software limitations which define the game world, the narrative decisions which give the story its particular structure, and so on. Spec Ops just does what Brecht was trying to do, "unsettles" the assumptions you make.
@MarikBentusi
@MarikBentusi 12 лет назад
Because it's the non-spoiler version. The thing that makes the game interesting is the deconstruction twist. If you already expect it, your experience will be less impactful than it could be. If you don't want to spend so much money on a risky title, feel free to watch Part 2 of this episode over at Penny Arcade.

The trouble is it doesn't really have anything in particular in its sights; the lone-wolf hero going off on his own isn't actually a particularly common trope in modern soldiers, usually the player character is a subordinate of another character and follows their orders, which in tun come from a source of actual authority. Walker really isn't all that much like a CoD / Battlefield protagonist, he's closer to a character like Nathan Drake.

Fun facts: the game was first supposed to be a cyberpunk game set in a dark future. But when they went to pitch that with 2K they wanted something more modern military. And then there was this guy on the team who always wanted to do a game with a Heart of Darkness like story.... well things fell into place. Also imagine how hard it was for this game not to be censored in Germany. Gladly they saw the value of the game and decided on a 18+ rating (albeit only after appealing the first judgement).

Fall out is a perfect example of a great game without multiplayer. This game was the best war game I have played for a very long time this ga, e is actually fun the multiplayer is behind incredible with random Sandstroms that occur and the ziplining and parcour is very cool. This game is underrated hand's down.

I do agree with the fact the games originated as a search for a fun escape from reality, but as ExtraCreditz himself has stated, the genre has evolved from that. Now it's more a search for an experience, which is where story comes in over gameplay. If gameplay was the only thing that mattered, you would see games like this flopping on day one, but as you can see, there is a massive audience that has been moved by the experience they had rather than the gameplay they encountered.

I know the game was short but I'm glad I payed full price for it. It was a brilliant game and to me short is good cause it means I can get the game finished in my limited amount of spare time. So glad I got the chance to play this. Thanks for the suggestion Extra Credits.

"Not having fun" is more meant in the fun you get from the likes of a doom or even a call of duty. Nonstop pulling on the trigger and feeling no remorse for the actions you partake in. You don't have "fun" while playing this game you just experience it. And it is an experience worth having.

Actually there is a point. Extra Credit episodes generally go for about 6-8 minutes. With that in mind, there's more than enough material in Spec Ops to be split into two videos, which is what they did. And in a lot of ways it is an advertisement. This show frequently recommends games which players may not have tried yet. If they came out and gave away everything, it would diminish the experience of playing the game in the first place.

I have to say, after watching this, I'm very intrigued by this game, though kind of intimidated. I don't remember the last time (if ever) that I played a game with such serious tones, without even trying to be fun. If I find it on sale, I'm buying this game.

I completely understand that. I actually love tragedies. To elaborate, the for-most way of getting a person to play a video game is to tell them that it's fun. I obviously understand that there is some form of appeal in this game, but I still don't really have any idea what that would be. I assume it's the story, but buying an expensive, short, and "unfun" game before a price cut seems is a stretch for me at this point. If I had money, I would buy it, but for now it will have to wait.

Best job in the world: Pizza delivery. Everyone's happy to see you (because who orders pizza when they're sad?), you get to drive around and listen to music or audiobooks all day, and it's the only job I know where your main duty is to leave work repeatedly! Not to mention the tips (if you work in a busy area). Though it's awfully hard on your car, and they don't let you deliver on a motorcycle anymore.

IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED THE GAME YET, DO NOT WATCH THIS OR ANY OTHER VIDEO ABOUT SPEC OPS THE LINE. JUST GO PLAY IT. It's too short to not spoil anything, and this video kind of ruined it for me, as did reading comments. You MUST go in completely blind to fully enjoy. I already had a good idea of what the game was going to give me before I played and it sort of ruined the experience for me.
