This was some video footage taken of various things happening in and around my local heritage railway the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway. The Kingdom of Fife Railway Preservation Society, which is run by unpaid volunteers and a registered charity will soon be receiving some more items of railway stock from the Bo'ness railway to keep them busy one of the items being an LMS Luggage, Mail & Parcels Van No.37817 Built 1935, LMS Derby. Diagram 1870.
Railways were once the main carriers for the Royal Mail, and handled a large volume of parcels and newspapers. Passengers also often had more luggage than now. Passenger trains had to accommodate such traffic in the Guard's Van; additional traffic on long distance trains required special vans such as this one.
Externally, this van was designed and painted to match the passenger carriages the LMS was building in the 1930s and 1940s: internally, it was just empty space. The side doors made it easy to load off a platform. The end doors allowed it to carry motor cars: the LMS was happy to look after the needs of wealthier travellers, for example those who wished to take their cars on holiday to the Highlands.

Greetings for across the pond! Thank you for uploading this and to the society for keeping history alive. Here in the States, rail companies move old rail cars to sidings where they sit and rot. The cars are destroyed by vandals as they sit on the sidings for years and even decades. They take old subway cars, strip them and use them for artificial reefs. Very few rail societies here that refurbish old rail cars. Such a shame...

Love your coverage of this railway, its better than any other heritage railways on You Tube in my opinion, and they have dedicated presenters and film crew. What poor preparation by the haulage company to send a trailer in with the wrong rail gauge, unbelievable.

IT LOOKED LIKE A CAR TRANSPORTER COACH LIKE WAS USED FROM HOLLOWAY CATTLE DOCK TO THE NORTH BACK IN THE 60S .THE ENDS OPEN OUT AND THE LOWER PEICE OF BODY WORK WAS FOR TO CARS TO PASS FROM ONE COACH TO ANOTHER MIGHT BE WRONG .

Yes, l remember the old Motorail services back in the late 1960s. Our family used to travel by rail from Sheffield in South Yorkshire to Devon and Cornwall for our annual holidays. The train was made up of 6 sleeping cars and a similar number of car transport vehicles behind just like this. We travelled overnight. This is a concept that maybe should be revived as people have such concerns over the useful range of electric vehicles. There could even be a generator coach so that you could recharge batteries as you travelled. If they can do it for mobile phones, why not scale it up!

Nice video. Kingdom of Fife railway, is that something to do with John Cameron of 60009 fame?

You'd think, but as far as I'm aware, no - I believe John Cameron is still trying to get permission for a farming and railways museum.

I see on wiki you only have half a mile of track any chance of a decent extension to 8 or 10 miles?
