Honestly, Seals kind of are just doing their own thing. They're great at the things they do, but those things are not normal Navy things nor are they just normal Navy things but harder. If you want what an 'elite SAILOR' looks like, look to the submariners. They're basically just like surface sailors, but better in every way.

I served two years shore duty as a Navy MP between my two sea service billets on smallboys . Our MP training officer / boat officer was a Senior Chief SEAL Vietnam veteran on his last command before retirement . He was a really cool dude and didn't swagger or boast , but we all knew he was badass and ' elite ' . One day on patrol I andd another MP had to jump off the seawall when a POV went into Tokyo Bay . We had to tread water until the police boat crew came to pick us up out of the water . Senior Chief was commanding the boat and snatched us to the deck shivering and approaching hypothermia . He wrapped us in wool blankets and delivered us to the USNH for observation by the Corpsmen . MP , a specialized navy job , but not elite , Corpsman a specialized navy rating , but not elite , SEAL , definately elite . All three combined accomplished the mission of saving lives that day . The next day the EOD Det and a recovery diver boat hoisted the POV from the bottom of the bay where it was lying upside down with the roof crushed and the glass shattered .

I used to be into military history until I realized that it was mostly flag officer-worshipping crap, as though they determine the outcome of battles/wars to the exclusion of absolutely everything else. Good weapons, good equipment, good tactics, the leadership/aptitude of junior officers, and frequent training in/with them wins wars, not some general pushing division markers around a map from his chatau command post. "Operational" success is nothing more than the aggregate success of "small", "insignificant" units.

The acquisition of good weapons/equipment, study and indoctrination of good tactics, cultivating an environment where merit and aptitude are rewarded, and ultimately weighing these factors against an enemy who is also doing the same are ALL the dominion of flag officers. Many A division of trained, hardened, veteran, well equipped troops has been annihilated by poor leadership and managment. And many a peasant army has risen to legend and fame by the guidance of a genius military leader.

I was in the Corps back when woodlands were the uniform. Still love them to this day. But I think they must have shrunk while in the closet. They are a bit tight around the middle.
