34067 Tangmere hauls The Royal Duchy through unforgettable conditions.
On one of those rare occasions when the weather, sea conditions and high tide combine to assault a passing steam train, in this case: the last RYTC "The Royal Duchy" of the season, we decided to vacate our dry and cosy home to brave the wild and wet coast for what promised to be an unusual scene. Luckily we found a subterranean shelter in the cliff to protect us from the torrential rain driven by the first of the season's easterly gales, whipping up a huge swell directly onto this exposed piece of track. A passing "top & tailed" Track Maintenance Train runs the gauntlet before the headlight of 34067 appears through 1.5 miles of solid rain and proceeds through the onslaught from the waves. As you watch the train's progress, consider the fact that the largest waves are not only throwing up tons of water but also sand and gravel, and sometimes pebbles as large as cricket balls; definitely not a time to be sticking your head out of the window!! Progress slows to an unscheduled stop at Dawlish, which must have seemed a better prospect to some passengers than Dawlish Warren in these conditions! Luckily a couple of local tourist board representatives are on hand to demonstrate to any alighting passengers how to have fun during their stay.....or maybe not? With a full head of steam, Tangmere, with a usual initial loss of footing, heads the train off for the remaining challenge along the coast to Teignmouth and ultimately to Par in Cornwall, a long way on a day like this and one I am sure, the crew and passengers won't forget in a long time!
UPDATE Dec. 2020: the sea wall section between the station and the tunnel (6:00 to 7:30) has now been completely reinforced and clad with solid concrete sections curved at the top to throw the waves backwards into the sea. Work is now being undertaken to protect the station, see here: www.newcivilen...

Films like this one shows perfectly why Dawlish is so special. The sea wall, the trains that run along it, and the rough seas!! I could watch films like this all day. Superb Alan and thank you for braving the elements to bring us this. Definitely going into my favs,. All the best...Tim.

A unique video that deserves to be part of a national archive of steam traction in the UK - from any era! Congratulations - I hope you can ensure it is archived beyond the vaults of RU-vid for all to share for posterity. It merits a wider audience than just us RU-vid steam video enthusiasts.

Well done for braving the elements, Alan. Great example of storms along the Dawlish seafront. Unfortunately (or not, considering the weather) I had family commitments so couldn't go out for this one, although I was home in time to see Tangmere storm past my house at the bottom of Hemerdon on the return trip. It was pouring down and nearly dark so I didn't film. Tangmere has become a definite favourite of mine over this summer. Keith

Hello from a steam fan in India. There are very few places in the country where train tracks run so close to the sea and definitely no steam trains ply on them after the 1980s. So this is an amazing sight for me. Thanks to your enthusiasm that you got out of your home in this weather to record this on video.

@@Steamclips I know I've commented before but was to engrossed in watching one of my favourite loco types that I didn't notice the two twats attempting to "surf"!!!! Obviously not locals, no proper board, no surf just rough waves, no idea!!!! Funny how a slippery quay and a high tide attracts the idiot public, still, If you have no brains then it doesn't really matter if you get your head stoved in.

Awesome! Absolutely awesome! Thanks for a wonderful expression of that so familiar stretch of Great Western railway .When seawalls are rebuilt/renovated the design these days is to create a concave surface so that breaking waves are redirected back out to sea. Let's hope that this beautiful length of line will remain viable for years to come.

Tangmere is a brave engine to tackle the run alongside the sea wall at Dawlish. When she stopped, I had the sense she was a bit frightened the waves might wash over on top of her. I certainly would be. As it was, she plucked up courage and started off again. Tangmere, I may not love you very much, but don't think I don't care. I do care. You looked frightened when you stopped at Dawlish Station, and I don't blame you. If I were a steamy like you on the same treacherous journey, I would have been as frightened as you were. I applaud you for braving your fear and starting off again. I'm not just saying that. Don't listen to those who scorn you; they don't understand what a wonderful machine you are. You're a credit to the railway in more ways than one, and I'm not just saying that. Happy steaming.

Dropping boulders hundreds of feet away along from the shore line to break the waves, then building the concave wall along the top of the present wall, that will help to divert the water not to flashing into the train and the tracks.... it will stop all the salt water going into the trains and the tracks and that will help stopping the corrosion in the long run.

My wife and I with another couple were on that train - it was my birthday. The windows of our coach were well and truly washed several times along that stretch and it wasn't just a gentle wash, it literally crashed with a loud noise each time. I admit there was some trepidation at that time. By the way the GW boys shouldn't be so cocky - the last time I travelled back behind 6024 she gave up at Exeter St Davids with a dead fire!

Its the only route linking Cornwall and Devon to the rest of the UK. There is talk of re-opening a secondary route but that wouldn't serve the riveria or have direct access onto the Paignton route not is it as fast. Network rail have no choice but to open it. It wasn't all of it which was damaged. 4 sections of 90m or so. I think Network rail are also planning on stabalising the cliff (a relief to those whose homes are on top) and to strengthen the sea wall.

Hello and thank you for your interesting comment. These are the facts: The Teign Valley Line which you mention opened between Newton Abbot and Christow in 1882 but was not extended to Exeter until 1903, 57 years after the South Devon Railway opened between Exeter and Newton Abbot! The line closed in 1959 and I remember travelling on it. The section in the video just before the station was weaker than the rest as residents insisted the walkway was dropped to beach level to preserve privacy when the wall was built in the 1840's. This was breached, rebuilt and strengthened in 2014 and work is now under way to strengthen and "future proof" the whole stretch of line in that you see. Kind regards, Alan

It's Brunell protesting this blatant treachery on the railway boards part and seeking revenge on the engine that dare venture on to his turf...

Why the long stop at Dawlish platform? Did they want to ensure the loco got thoroughly coated in salt water???

Hi and thank you for your interesting point. Apparently they were held by a "red", so maybe there was a problem with the preceding service further down the line. Alan

I have walked along that wall with that sea as calm as a frozen lake. I have also walked along it in bad conditions ending up getting soaked in my clothes. But I have never or will never walk along that wall in those conditions!

I was watching the waves in a 2 Nov '23 video of storm Cieran and thought of this one of yours. One comment to that video was from someone whose father worked on the footplate in those steam days, and which I thought might amuse you too... he said his father often got drenched along here - but was dried out by Teignmouth. Questions from a tyro, Alan - why is she blowing steam all the way to Dawlish? And, the freight train looks to be running 'light' - any conjecture as to where or why?

Hi Peter. My grandfather was a tram driver in Torbay and would have to drive through the waves crashing over Livermead. With open top trams, this meant a regular soaking as the water escaped down the stairs above his head.... and no fire to dry him out after!! The freight train is an empty track maintenance set which would normally be full of rail lengths. Bulleid boilers are famous for free steaming and soon blow off after over firing. The unexpected stop a Dawlish didn't help! Best regards, Alan
