The Oregon Cascades and northern California have beautiful scenery, even more so when snow covered. I've ridden over this route a couple of times on the Coast Starlight. Your drone footage shows off the country much better than you can see from the train. Your views of Klamath Lake are especially beautiful. Imagine what the pioneers must have faced crossing through this area in wagons. One of my ancestors did and settled near Portland. I marvel how the Central Pacific built a railroad over Cascade summit. Those were very tough and determined men. Your video shows some of what they conquered and the difficulties railroaders still face running trains on these steep grades in winter. Well done. That must have been tough flying in that snow; it looked very cold.

Thank you Paul and I agree I have ridden this a number of times on the Starlight and you do miss out on a lot with the side view out of the train. I love flying in the Klamath Lake area. Quite a feat indeed to build this route through the mountain section. It was pretty cold a couple of those days but worth it in my mind!

Another stunning video. Pengra Pass never gets old. I keep thinking of that once in a lifetime shot of you and Mark waving at your drone. And yes, once again I marvel at what it must’ve taken to construct all of that. When you’re flying and it’s snowing it just looks magical., like being inside a snow globe. Thank you as always for the beauty that you capture and share.

Thanks so much Rick it's always such a blast in the snow and I'm so glad I don't have to go far for it in the Winter time. Oh yes that is the killer shot of Mark and myself! It took 3 different attempts until we got it right. You're too kind Rick I'm humbled you think so highly of all my work. :)

I’m a sucker for trains and I can’t explain. About 50 years ago I was in my early teens and often did chores for others. A guy I worked for had a huge landscape project going on in his basement and I ended up helping create a landscape with cars trucks buses people and of course trains. So big thanks for this video

Another great production! The south-facing shots, along the Black Butte Sub, also show well the burn area of the Lava? fire. Also loved the drone footage north of Klamath Falls where you’re flying near the low clouds and a waterfowl swoops by. Flying the drone in heavy snow-you’ve got more nerve than me.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 4 месяца назад
Thank you Bill! I don't think that specific area was from the Lava Fire. That was closer to the base of Shasta itself but that does indeed look like some fire from the last 5 years or so.

Good to see the Amtrak GEs too, they've done well and good to see them still working hard. The whole video is amazing, but the first sequence in the snow laden trees at Pengra Pass is just jaw dropping. Speaking of, when you're driving south on US97, after you crest the little pass over tunnel 17, the view of Shasta as you come into Dorris is just magnificent. I envy the Amtrak passengers passing through that winter wonderland. Perhaps a southbound trip on the Starlight at a future date is in order. It's the only western Amtrak train I haven't traveled on.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 4 месяца назад
Thanks so much! What you want is a Northbound trip on the Starlight in the late Spring, Summer, or early Fall to get great views of Mt Shasta. The Southbound trip through there is always under the cover of darkness.
@J3scribe
@J3scribe 4 месяца назад
@@TheRailfanDan I was talking about the drive down from Klamath Falls, but yeah. Northbound or southbound [on Amtrak], Shasta is usually passed in the dark. I think most railfans would travel at 25mph in the dark to wake up to Shasta in the morning light in either direction. It's stupendous!

So I watched most of this last weekend at my friend's house and am now just getting around to finishing it a week later lol. There are so many areas along the line that I love going to on the hill, but perhaps my favorite 'go-to' is at tunnel seven. It's there that I can hike along the side of the tunnel and check out some of the cool things that the SP did to the tunnel, along with other cool features, back on the day. Like, did you know that there's a tunnel access portal sticking out the side of the mountain? Also, the trail gives access to the small rock shed, trestle, and tunnel eight. That's the location of a derailment back in the 1960's (?), dropping at least one boxcar down the steep ravine that is till there to this day.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 4 месяца назад
Thanks Mike! Yes I know about that trail around 7 but have yet to check it out myself. I'll have to finally do that once the snow is melted.

Actually you would be surprised how well drones do in the snow. It's much different than flying in the rain. Several times when it was very blizzard like I was shocked to see how dry it was when I retrieved it. I think the propellers help to just whip the snow away entirely.

Snowy landscapes are indeed the best and the nicest. Especially from the air, where we can see a lot of the surroundings too. The snowfalls at the start are really lovely. The trains are cool here, as they snake around the mountains. I'd like to ask something. Does the exhaust smoke bothers the drone when you fly close to the locomotives? Fantastic video again Dan. I really enjoyed my beloved UP engines. And of course the pumpkins too.

Thanks Z! I have no yet found any issues with flying the drone into exhaust. I think it's kind of neat if it isn't too terribly thick! You do always come to mind at some point when I'm working on a video with UP power! More of this to come in a follow up snow video at some point soonish.

Yes DC locomotives are best for snow as AC locomotives drop the load way too much in snow. DC will spin more and 'dig' thru it.

Well done, some very beautiful footage. I wonder if it's possible to get loco sound from the drone, or you just hear the drone motor buzzing? I'm glad you got some ground scenes with sound, they were nice. My only suggestion: the music is a little Hollywood pretentious; a bit simpler music would be nice. Anyway, thanks.
