Shortly after we got married, I was shipped out for Desert Storm. In my first package from home that finally reached me, she had made me a mix tape and this was the first song. I cried my eyes out. We held out the long distance a military separation so we are going into our 32 anniversary this June and I still hold her every day.

It’s 1988 and I am out of state at my freshman year of college. My home town boyfriend (who is back in my hometown, working in his chosen profession) records himself talking to me on cassette tapes and mails them to me. On one tape, this song comes on the radio in the background, and he sings along, recording himself singling this whole song. Then he sent it to me. I married that boy. True story!

Richard Marx (yes, that is his real name) owned the airwaves in the late 80s and early 90s. His first SEVEN singles all hit the Top 5, including three #1s. This was one of them. Some of his other big airplay hits were "Hold On to the Nights", "Endless Summer Nights", "Satisfied", "Don't Mean Nothing", "Should've Known Better", and "Angelia". "Hazard" is another great one, and tells a great story. He also collaborated with the legendary Luther Vandross on "Dance With My Father", for which he won a Grammy. Believe it or not, he also duetted with Heart in 2013 on the song "All Through the Night". Thanks for reacting! Love everything 80s!

Richard, at the time was in a very serious relationship with “actress/singer/dancer” Cynthia Rhodes (she was in the Toto Rosanna video as well as Staying Alive with John Travolta and Dirty Dancing with Swayze along with many other movies). Cynthia was doing a film in Africa while Richard was in L.A. He wrote her this song and sent it to her. It was nothing more than a personal love song from him to her. She played it cried with joy and played it for her girlfriend. Upon coming home it got around & many suggested that Richard put it on a record. He constantly said “NO” it was nothing more than just a love song for her. Well, he said “fine” thinking nothing would come of it and evidently it did. It went to #1 on the “Hot 100 billboard chart”.

Not only is he a great singer, he's an amazing songwriter. He's written for so many people, it would take me quite awhile to list them all. If you listen to Lionel Ritchie's song "You Are", you will hear him singing backup which was one of his first things he did. He wrote this song "Right Here Waiting" for his then wife Cynthia Rhodes (Dirty Dancing, Staying Alive). He's got so many great songs to choose from, you will enjoy discovering all those gems. I've always been a fan from his first hit "Don't Mean Nothing" until today. Enjoy the ride!

But from the very 1st hearing of HAZARD I was hooked I kept playing it all the time & it gave me goosebumps Still today, whenever i play it the haunting bittersweet melody & The way Richard Marx sings it , It never fails to give me shivers I guarantee once you hear this you will replay it until the haunting sounds echo through your mind. A more rockin' pop and danceable (typical 80's) song by him is, "Should've Known Better." "Endless Summer Nights" is another great one that has a slower tempo and a little somethin' right off the bat that Amber will love! 😊 Man, these take me back!!! ❤ "Now and Forever" would definitely be that wedding song everyone used. "Hold On To the Nights" is another strong ballad. There are more, but those really got Richard to be "a household name."

Richard had no intention of recording the song (which he deemed too personal) and offered it to Barbra Streisand. Although she liked the melody, she couldn't identify with he lyrics. She said (quote) "I’m not gonna be right here waiting for anyone". She asked Richard to rewrite the lyrics but he refused. The rest is history, the song reached number one in the US (and stayed there for three weeks) and 8 other countries. It went platinum and became a classic.

Notice that both the guitar solo and the main piano riff are simply restatements of the chorus melody. It's so simple and beautiful that it doesn't need anything else. For a more upbeat Richard Marx, check out "Don't Mean Nothing."

I still love Everything You Do. My oldest daughter loves loves Robin Hood Prince of Thieves . Cause of how Alan Rickman is in it. What I didn’t know as a 90’s teenager he wrote and produced my favorite NSYNC song This I Promise You. Now I know why it was always my favorite.

You too? 😊 This is a Navy song. My husband and I were both active duty when this came out. He came home from 6 month deployment, and two weeks later my ship went on deployment for 6 months. Longest year of our lives. That's what I loved about Norfolk. You could drive down to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and watch the ship come through, and then beat feet back to base in time to see her pull up to the pier. Homecomings were so sweet either way.

Richard Marx is a bigger songwriter than even a recording artist. He, like Prince has written many more songs than he has ever released himself! He is INSANELY talented! My favorite of his is 'Hold On To The Nights'. It'd be awesome if it made it to your channel someday! Love all of your reactions! Even the ones that Jay says "It was eh... ok. Not like I'll be cruising in my car with this". Hahahahaaaa! I love that you guys are so honest! You're the best!!!

When this came out in 1989 I was in the Navy and doing a shore tour with my family in the Philippines. I got to know some of the girls who worked in the infamous sex trade there. They were often forced in to this lifestyle by social and economic pressures beyond their control. So of course they dreamed of an escape, and one dream was to win the love of a sailor and get a whole new life. Well too many times to count sailors took advantage of these women emotionally, feeding their hopes with empty words and promises then leaving and forgetting. This song reminds me of those girls who would tell me of their "boyfriends" who would someday return to take them to a better life, over 30 years later I still grieve for them!!

When I was in Jr High this song was everywhere. One day we all got called into the auditorium for something, but us being teens everyone was chatting standing around. The teacher at the front was trying to get everyone to sit with no success. All of a sudden one of my friends Tammy went up to the piano by the stage and started playing the piano opening. It was like a wave in the auditorium of kids going quiet to pay attention to this song. Everyone moved to their seats in awe. My friend was shy, and she was beet red in the face from the attention and sat down too. The teacher thanked her and started the meeting. A moment as you can see I've never forgotten:)

By the way, this song had originally been written by Richard for Barbra Streisand, on her own request. However, she asked him to change the lyrics because she said she wouldn't be waiting for anyone. LOL. In the end, he decided to record it himself and turned it into a smash hit.

Richard Marx is an amazing song writer. He wrote Kenny Rogers song “Crazy”. Kenny changed one word in the song and by doing so made himself co-writer and took 50% of the writing royalties for himself. The last concert I saw pre-Covid in Dec 2019 was an acoustic concert with Richard Marx and Rick Springfield. The were both great.

This always reminds me of when my wife was pregnant with our daughter. During the early months of the pregnancy she had dreadful bouts of nausea. One morning, driving to work, we had to pull over to the side of the road as my wife was feeling dreadful and this song was playing and the line that stood out was "oh can't you see it baby, you've got me going crazy". It was so apt. Loved this song since.

Richard Marx wrote several songs for several bands and artists especially in the "Pop-rock" genre. Is songs often has a little more edge which made them a go-to for Rock/Metal bands who wanted a radio hit. In between them he had some monster hits of his own, like this one and "Don't Mean Nothing". He wrote "Edge of a Broken Heart" that VIXEN scored a hit with. A band and song you reviewed a while ago.
